David Anointed King of All Israel
(2 Samuel 5:1–5)
Then all Israel came together to David at Hebron and said, “Here we are, your own flesh and blood. 1Ch 12:23-401Ki 2:112Sa 15:102Sa 5:1-16Deu 17:15Gen 29:14Jdg 9:22Sa 19:12-13 Even in times past, 1 while Saul was king, you were the one who led Israel out and brought them back. And the LORD your God said, ‘You will shepherd My people Israel, and you will be ruler over them.’” 2Sa 5:2Jhn 10:4Psa 78:711Sa 16:131Sa 18:132Sa 7:7Mat 2:61Ki 14:7
So all the elders of Israel came to the king at Hebron, where David made a covenant with them before the LORD. And they anointed him king over Israel, according to the word of the LORD through Samuel. 1Sa 16:11Sa 16:12-132Sa 2:42Sa 5:31Sa 15:281Sa 16:31Sa 28:171Sa 11:15
David Conquers Jerusalem
(2 Samuel 5:6–11)
Then David and all the Israelites marched to Jerusalem (that is, Jebus), where the Jebusites inhabited the land. Jdg 1:21Jos 15:63Jos 15:81Ch 11:5Gen 15:212Sa 5:6-10Exo 3:17Gen 10:16
The people of Jebus said to David, “You will never get in here.” Psa 132:131Ch 11:71Ki 8:11Sa 17:261Sa 17:361Sa 17:9-102Ch 5:22Sa 5:9
Nevertheless, David captured the fortress of Zion (that is, the City of David).
Now David had said, “Whoever is the first to strike down a Jebusite will become chief commander.” 2Sa 8:161Sa 17:252Sa 2:182Sa 20:232Sa 3:27Jos 15:16-17
And Joab son of Zeruiah went up first, and he became the chief.
So David took up residence in the fortress; that is why it was called the City of David. 2Sa 5:71Ch 11:5Psa 2:6 He built up the city around it, from the supporting terraces 2to the surrounding wall, while Joab restored the rest of the city. 1Ki 11:271Ki 9:152Ki 12:20Jdg 9:20Jdg 9:6Neh 4:2

David’s Mighty Men
(2 Samuel 23:8–39)
Now these were the chiefs of David’s mighty men, who, together with all Israel, bolstered and strengthened his kingdom, according to the word of the LORD concerning Israel. 1Ch 11:32Sa 23:8-391Ch 12:381Sa 16:11Sa 16:12-142Sa 3:17-182Sa 3:21 This is the list of David’s mighty men: 2Sa 23:81Ch 12:181Ch 27:2
Jashobeam son of Hachmoni was chief of the officers; 3 he wielded his spear against three hundred men, whom he killed at one time.
Next in command was Eleazar son of Dodo 4the Ahohite, one of the three mighty men. 1Ch 27:41Ch 11:191Ch 11:211Ch 8:42Sa 23:17-192Sa 23:232Sa 23:9 He was with David at Pas-dammim when the Philistines gathered there for battle. At the place with a field full of barley, the troops fled from the Philistines. 1Sa 17:12Sa 23:11-12 But Eleazar and David stationed themselves 5in the middle of the field and defended it. They struck down the Philistines, and the LORD brought about a great victory. Psa 144:10Pro 21:311Sa 14:231Sa 19:52Ki 5:12Sa 23:10Psa 18:50
Three of the thirty chief men went down to David, to the rock at the cave of Adullam, while a company of Philistines was encamped in the Valley of Rephaim. 1Ch 14:92Sa 5:18Isa 17:51Sa 22:12Sa 23:13-392Sa 5:22Jos 12:15Jos 15:8 At that time David was in the stronghold, and the garrison of the Philistines was at Bethlehem. 1Sa 10:51Sa 13:231Sa 13:41Sa 22:11Sa 23:25Psa 142:1 David longed for water and said, “Oh, that someone would get me a drink of water from the well near the gate of Bethlehem!” 2Sa 23:15-16Isa 12:3Jhn 4:10Jhn 4:14Psa 63:1Num 11:4-5Psa 143:6Psa 42:1-2
So the Three broke through the Philistine camp, drew water from the well at the gate of Bethlehem, and brought it back to David. But he refused to drink it; instead, he poured it out to the LORD, Act 21:131Sa 19:51Sa 7:62Co 5:14-15Act 20:24Sng 8:6 saying, “Far be it from me, my God, to do this! How can I drink the blood of these men who risked their lives?” Because they had brought it at the risk of their lives, David refused to drink it. 2Sa 23:17Psa 72:141Co 15:301Ki 21:31Sa 19:5Jdg 5:18Jdg 9:17Jhn 6:55
Such were the exploits of the three mighty men.
Now Abishai, the brother of Joab, was chief of the Three, 6 and he lifted his spear against three hundred men, killed them, and won a name along with the Three. 1Sa 26:61Ch 2:162Sa 18:22Sa 2:182Sa 20:62Sa 21:172Sa 23:18-392Sa 3:30 He was doubly honored above the Three, and he became their commander, even though he was not included among the Three. 1Co 15:41Mat 13:8
And Benaiah son of Jehoiada was a man of valor from Kabzeel, a man of many exploits. He struck down two champions of Moab, 7 and on a snowy day he went down into a pit and killed a lion. 2Sa 23:20-232Sa 8:18Jos 15:211Ch 12:81Ch 27:5-61Ki 1:381Ki 1:81Ki 2:30 He also killed an Egyptian, a huge man five cubits tall. 8 Although the Egyptian had a spear like a weaver’s beam in his hand, Benaiah went against him with a club, snatched the spear from his hand, and killed the Egyptian with his own spear. 1Sa 17:71Ch 20:51Sa 17:41Sa 17:51Deu 3:11 These were the exploits of Benaiah son of Jehoiada, who won a name alongside the three mighty men. He was most honored among the Thirty, but he did not become one of the Three. And David appointed him over his guard. 2Sa 20:23
