Samuel Anoints David

Now the LORD said to Samuel, “How long are you going to mourn for Saul, since I have rejected him as king over Israel? Fill your horn with oil and go. I am sending you to Jesse of Bethlehem, for I have selected from his sons a king for Myself.” 1Sa 15:232Ki 9:11Sa 15:35Psa 78:68-711Sa 10:11Sa 15:261Sa 16:15Rom 15:12

“How can I go?” Samuel asked. “Saul will hear of it and kill me!” 1Sa 9:121Sa 20:29Mat 10:161Ki 18:9-14Exo 3:11Jer 38:26-27Luk 1:34

The LORD answered, “Take a heifer with you and say, ‘I have come to sacrifice to the LORD.’ Then invite Jesse to the sacrifice, and I will show you what you are to do. You are to anoint for Me the one I indicate.” 1Sa 9:161Sa 16:12-132Sa 15:11Act 9:61Sa 9:12-13Deu 17:14-15Exo 4:15Mat 22:1-4

So Samuel did what the LORD had said and went to Bethlehem. When the elders of the town met him, they trembled and asked, “Do you come in peace?” 1Ki 2:131Ch 12:17-181Sa 21:12Ki 9:22Luk 5:81Ki 17:182Sa 6:9Gen 48:7

“In peace,” he replied. “I have come to sacrifice to the LORD. Consecrate yourselves and come with me to the sacrifice.” Exo 19:10Jos 3:5Lev 20:7-81Co 11:28Exo 19:14-15Jos 7:132Ch 30:17-20Job 1:5

Then he consecrated Jesse and his sons and invited them to the sacrifice. When they arrived, Samuel saw Eliab and said, “Surely here before the LORD is His anointed.” 1Sa 17:131Ch 2:131Sa 17:22Jdg 8:181Ch 27:181Ki 12:26

But the LORD said to Samuel, “Do not consider his appearance or height, for I have rejected him; the LORD does not see as man does. For man sees the outward appearance, but the LORD sees the heart.” Jhn 7:24Jer 17:10Luk 16:151Pe 3:4Isa 55:8-9Pro 16:2Pro 31:30Psa 147:10-11

Then Jesse called Abinadab and presented him to Samuel, who said, “The LORD has not chosen this one either.” 1Sa 17:131Ch 2:13

Next Jesse presented Shammah, 1 but Samuel said, “The LORD has not chosen this one either.” 1Sa 17:131Ch 2:132Sa 13:3

Thus Jesse made seven of his sons pass before Samuel, but Samuel told him, “The LORD has not chosen any of these.” 1Ch 2:13-15

And Samuel asked him, “Are these all the sons you have?” Psa 78:70-712Sa 7:81Ch 17:71Sa 17:282Sa 13:31Sa 17:12-15

“There is still the youngest,” Jesse replied, “but he is tending the sheep.”

“Send for him,” Samuel replied. “For we will not sit down to eat until he arrives.”

So Jesse sent for his youngest son and brought him in. He was ruddy, with beautiful eyes and a handsome appearance. And the LORD said, “Rise and anoint him, for he is the one.” Lam 4:7Sng 5:101Sa 17:421Sa 9:17Psa 89:19-20Act 4:27Act 7:20Gen 39:6

So Samuel took the horn of oil and anointed him in the presence of his brothers, and the Spirit of the LORD rushed upon David from that day forward. Then Samuel set out and went to Ramah. 1Sa 10:6Heb 1:9Jhn 3:341Sa 10:11Sa 10:9-10Jdg 11:29Num 27:18Isa 11:1-3

David Serves Saul

After the Spirit of the LORD had departed from Saul, a spirit of distress 2from the LORD began to torment him. Psa 51:111Sa 18:12Jdg 9:231Sa 18:101Sa 28:15Jdg 16:20Act 19:15-161Ki 22:22 Saul’s servants said to him, “Surely a spirit of distress from God is tormenting you. Let our lord command your servants here to seek out someone who can skillfully play the harp. Whenever the spirit of distress from God is upon you, he is to play it, and you will be well.” 2Ki 3:151Ki 10:81Sa 16:21-231Sa 18:101Sa 19:91Sa 10:5Gen 41:46

And Saul commanded his servants, “Find me someone who plays well, and bring him to me.”

One of the servants answered, “I have seen a son of Jesse of Bethlehem who knows how to play the harp. He is a mighty man of valor, a warrior, eloquent and handsome, and the LORD is with him.” 1Sa 3:19Gen 39:231Sa 17:32-36Gen 39:21Sa 10:7Mat 1:23Mat 28:201Sa 18:12-14

So Saul sent messengers to Jesse and said, “Send me your son David, who is with the sheep.” 1Sa 16:111Sa 17:15Psa 78:70-721Ki 19:191Sa 17:33-34Amo 1:1Amo 7:14-15Exo 3:1-10

And Jesse took a donkey loaded with bread, a skin of wine, and one young goat, and sent them to Saul with his son David. 1Sa 10:27Pro 18:161Sa 17:181Sa 25:182Sa 16:1-2Gen 43:11 When David came to Saul and entered his service, Saul admired him greatly, and David became his armor-bearer. Then Saul sent word to Jesse, saying, “Let David remain in my service, for I am pleased with him.” And whenever the spirit from God came upon Saul, David would pick up his harp and play, and Saul would become well, and the spirit of distress would depart from him. 1Sa 16:14-161Sa 18:10-11Luk 11:24-26Mat 12:43-45
