Josiah Restores the Passover

(2 Kings 23:21–27)

Then Josiah celebrated the Passover to the LORD in Jerusalem, and the Passover lamb was slaughtered on the fourteenth day of the first month. Exo 12:6Num 9:32Ki 23:21-23Ezr 6:192Ch 30:1-27Deu 16:1-8Ezk 45:21 He appointed the priests to their duties and encouraged them in the service of the house of the LORD. 2Ch 31:21Ch 22:191Ch 24:1-312Ch 23:182Ch 23:82Ch 29:5-11Ezr 6:18Num 18:5-7

To the Levites who taught all Israel and were holy to the LORD, Josiah said: “Put the holy ark in the temple built by Solomon son of David king of Israel. It is not to be carried around on your shoulders. Now serve the LORD your God and His people Israel. 1Ch 23:262Ch 17:8-92Ch 30:22Deu 33:10Mal 2:72Ch 5:72Co 4:5Num 16:9-10 Prepare yourselves by families in your divisions, according to the instructions written by David king of Israel and Solomon his son. 2Ch 8:141Ch 23:1-261Ch 24:11Ch 9:10-34Neh 11:10-20

Moreover, stand in the Holy Place by the divisions of the families of your kinsmen the lay people, and by the divisions of the families of the Levites. Psa 134:1Ezr 6:18Psa 135:2 Slaughter the Passover lambs, consecrate yourselves, and make preparations for your fellow countrymen to carry out the word of the LORD given by 1Moses.” 2Ch 29:52Ch 29:15Heb 9:13-142Ch 30:15-19Exo 12:21-22Exo 12:6Ezr 6:20-21Gen 35:2

From his own flocks and herds Josiah contributed 30,000 lambs and goats plus 3,000 bulls for the Passover offerings for all the people who were present. 1Ki 8:632Ch 30:241Ch 29:32Ch 31:32Ch 7:8-10Ezk 45:17Isa 32:8

His officials also contributed willingly to the people and priests and Levites. Hilkiah, Zechariah, and Jehiel, the administrators of the house of God, gave the priests 2,600 Passover offerings and 300 bulls. 2Ch 29:31-331Ch 24:4-51Ch 29:171Ch 29:6-91Ch 9:202Ch 34:14-202Co 8:122Co 9:7 Additionally, Conaniah and his brothers Shemaiah and Nethanel, as well as Hashabiah, Jeiel, and Jozabad, officers of the Levites, donated to the Levites 5,000 Passover offerings and 500 bulls. 2Ch 31:12Isa 1:10-15Jer 3:10Jer 7:21-28Mic 6:6-8

So the service was prepared; the priests stood in their places and the Levites in their divisions according to the king’s command. 2Ch 30:16Ezr 6:182Ch 35:4-5 And they slaughtered the Passover lambs, while the priests sprinkled the blood handed to them and the Levites skinned the animals. 2Ch 29:342Ch 29:22-242Ch 30:16Heb 9:21-22Lev 1:5-6Num 18:3Num 18:7 They set aside the burnt offerings to be given to the divisions of the families of the people to offer to the LORD, as is written in the Book of Moses; and they did the same with the bulls. Lev 3:14-16Lev 3:3Lev 3:5Lev 3:9-11

They roasted the Passover animals on the fire according to the regulation, and they boiled the other holy offerings in pots, kettles, and bowls and quickly brought them to all the people. Exo 12:8-91Sa 2:13-15Deu 16:7Lev 6:28Lam 1:12-13Num 6:19Psa 22:14Rom 12:11 Afterward, they made preparations for themselves and for the priests, since the priests, the descendants of Aaron, were offering up burnt offerings and fat until nightfall. So the Levites made preparations for themselves and for the priests, the descendants of Aaron. Act 6:2-4

The singers, the descendants of Asaph, were at their stations according to the command of David, Asaph, Heman, and Jeduthun the king’s seer. And the gatekeepers at each gate did not need to leave their position, because their fellow Levites made preparations for them. 1Ch 25:1-71Ch 26:12-191Ch 9:17-191Ch 16:41-421Ch 23:52Ch 29:25-26Psa 77:1Psa 78:1

So on that day the entire service of the LORD was carried out for celebrating the Passover and offering burnt offerings on the altar of the LORD, according to the command of King Josiah. The Israelites who were present also observed the Passover at that time, as well as the Feast of Unleavened Bread 2for seven days. Exo 12:15-201Co 5:7-82Ch 30:21-23Deu 16:3-4Deu 16:8Exo 13:6-7Exo 23:15Exo 34:18 No such Passover had been observed in Israel since the days of Samuel the prophet. None of the kings of Israel ever observed a Passover like the one that Josiah observed with the priests, the Levites, all Judah, the Israelites who were present, and the people of Jerusalem. 2Ch 30:52Ki 23:21-232Ch 30:26-27 In the eighteenth year of Josiah’s reign, this Passover was observed.

The Death of Josiah

(2 Kings 23:28–30)

After all this, when Josiah had set the temple in order, Neco king of Egypt marched up to fight at Carchemish by the Euphrates, and Josiah went out to confront him. 2Ki 23:29-30Isa 10:9Jer 46:2-12 But Neco sent messengers to him, saying, “What is the issue between you and me, O king of Judah? I have not come against you today, but I am fighting another dynasty. God told me to hurry; so stop opposing God, who is with me, or He will destroy you!” 2Ch 25:192Ki 18:252Sa 16:10Isa 36:10Jhn 2:4Mat 8:29

Josiah, however, did not turn away from him; instead, in order to engage him in battle, he disguised himself. He did not listen to Neco’s words from the mouth of God, but went to fight him on the Plain of Megiddo. Jdg 5:192Ch 18:291Ki 22:302Ch 35:211Ki 14:21Ki 22:342Ch 18:4-62Ki 23:30 There the archers shot King Josiah, who said to his servants, “Take me away, for I am badly wounded!” 1Ki 22:342Ki 8:292Ki 9:24Gen 49:23Lam 3:132Ch 18:33

So his servants took him out of his chariot, put him in his second chariot, and brought him to Jerusalem, where he died. And Josiah was buried in the tomb of his fathers, and all Judah and Jerusalem mourned for him. Zec 12:112Ki 23:302Ch 34:28Ecc 8:14Ecc 9:1-2Psa 36:6Gen 41:43

Laments over Josiah

Then Jeremiah lamented over Josiah, and to this day all the choirs of men and women sing laments over Josiah. They established them as a statute for Israel, and indeed they are written in the Book of Laments. Jer 22:10Lam 4:20Jer 9:17-21Job 3:8Mat 9:23Jer 22:20Ecc 12:5

As for the rest of the acts of Josiah, along with his deeds of loving devotion according to what is written in the Law of the LORD— 2Ch 31:202Ch 32:32 his acts from beginning to end—they are indeed written in the Book of the Kings of Israel and Judah. 2Ch 20:342Ch 24:272Ch 25:262Ch 26:222Ch 32:322Ch 33:192Ki 10:342Ki 16:19
