Elijah Denounces Ahaziah

(1 Kings 22:51–53)

After the death of Ahab, Moab rebelled against Israel. 2Sa 8:21Ch 18:22Ki 3:4-52Ki 8:202Ki 8:22Num 24:7Psa 60:8

Now Ahaziah had fallen through the lattice of his upper room in Samaria and injured himself. So he sent messengers and instructed them: “Go inquire of Baal-zebub, the god of Ekron, whether I will recover from this injury.” 2Ki 1:162Ki 8:7-10Mat 10:25Mrk 3:22Isa 37:191Ki 11:332Ki 1:32Ki 1:6

But the angel of the LORD said to Elijah the Tishbite, “Go up to meet the messengers of the king of Samaria and ask them, ‘Is it because there is no God in Israel that you are on your way to inquire of Baal-zebub, the god of Ekron?’ 1Ki 17:1Jon 2:8Act 12:7-11Jer 2:11-13Psa 76:1Act 8:26Mrk 3:221Ki 18:1 Therefore this is what the LORD says: ‘You will not get up from the bed on which you are lying. You will surely die.’” Ezk 18:4Gen 2:17Gen 3:41Sa 28:192Ki 1:16Pro 11:191Ki 14:122Ki 1:6

So Elijah departed.

When the messengers returned to the king, he asked them, “Why have you returned?”

They replied, “A man came up to meet us and said, ‘Go back to the king who sent you and tell him that this is what the LORD says: Is it because there is no God in Israel that you are sending these men to inquire of Baal-zebub, the god of Ekron? Therefore you will not get up from the bed on which you are lying. You will surely die.’” Psa 16:41Ch 10:13-142Ki 1:2-4Isa 41:22-23

The king asked them, “What sort of man came up to meet you and spoke these words to you?” 1Sa 28:14Jdg 8:18

“He was a hairy man, 1” they answered, “with a leather belt around his waist.” Mat 3:4Zec 13:4Mrk 1:6Isa 20:2Luk 1:17Mat 11:8Rev 11:3

“It was Elijah the Tishbite,” said the king.

Then King Ahaziah sent to Elijah a captain with his company of fifty men. So the captain went up to Elijah, who was sitting on top of a hill, and said to him, “Man of God, the king declares, ‘Come down!’” 2Ki 6:13-14Heb 11:36Luk 6:11-121Ki 18:101Ki 18:41Ki 18:421Ki 19:21Ki 22:26-27

Elijah answered the captain, “If I am a man of God, may fire come down from heaven and consume you and your fifty men.” Luk 9:54Dan 3:251Ki 18:36-38Dan 3:22Heb 12:29Psa 106:18Job 1:16Num 16:28-30

And fire came down from heaven and consumed the captain and his fifty men.

So the king sent to Elijah another captain with his fifty men. And the captain said to Elijah, “Man of God, the king declares, ‘Come down at once!’” 1Sa 22:17-191Sa 6:9Act 4:16-17Isa 26:11Isa 32:7Jer 5:3Jhn 18:5-12Luk 22:63-64

Again Elijah replied, “If I am a man of God, may fire come down from heaven and consume you and your fifty men.” 2Ki 1:9-10

And the fire of God came down from heaven and consumed the captain and his fifty men.

So the king sent a third captain with his fifty men. And the third captain went up, fell on his knees before Elijah, and begged him, “Man of God, may my life and the lives of these fifty servants please be precious in your sight. Isa 1:51Ki 13:61Sa 26:21Ecc 9:3Exo 11:8Isa 60:14Isa 66:2Jas 4:7 Behold, fire has come down from heaven and consumed the first two captains of fifty, with all their men. But now may my life be precious in your sight.” Act 20:241Sa 26:211Sa 26:242Ki 1:10-11Mat 16:25-26Pro 6:26Psa 116:15Psa 49:8

Then the angel of the LORD said to Elijah, “Go down with him. Do not be afraid of him.” Isa 51:12Ezk 2:6Jer 1:171Ki 18:152Ki 1:3Gen 15:1Jer 15:20Mat 10:28

So Elijah got up and went down with him to the king.

And Elijah said to King Ahaziah, “This is what the LORD says: Is there really no God in Israel for you to inquire of His word? Is that why you have sent messengers to inquire of Baal-zebub, the god of Ekron? Therefore you will not get up from the bed on which you are lying. You will surely die.” 2Ki 1:2-41Ki 14:6-131Ki 21:18-241Ki 22:282Ki 5:21Exo 4:22-23Psa 132:32Ki 1:6

Jehoram Succeeds Ahaziah

So Ahaziah died according to the word of the LORD that Elijah had spoken. And since he had no son, Jehoram 2succeeded him in the second year of the reign of Jehoram son of Jehoshaphat over Judah. 2Ki 3:11Ki 22:512Ki 8:16-17

As for the rest of the acts of Ahaziah, along with his accomplishments, are they not written in the Book of the Chronicles of the Kings of Israel? 1Ki 14:191Ki 22:39
