The Choosing of the Seven

(1 Timothy 3:8–13)

In those days when the disciples were increasing in number, the Grecian Jews among them began to grumble against the Hebraic Jews 1because their widows were being overlooked in the daily distribution of food. Act 2:41Act 4:35Jas 5:9Act 2:47Act 6:7Act 9:39Heb 13:1Act 11:20

So the Twelve summoned all the disciples and said, “It is unacceptable for us to neglect the word of God in order to wait on tables. This proposal pleased the whole group. They chose Stephen, a man full of faith and of the Holy Spirit, as well as Philip, Prochorus, Nicanor, Timon, Parmenas, and Nicolas from Antioch, a convert to Judaism. 2 Act 11:24Act 21:8Act 8:5-40Act 6:3Act 6:8Act 7:1Act 11:19Act 13:1 They presented these seven to the apostles, 3 who prayed and laid their hands on them. 2Ti 1:6Num 8:10Act 1:241Ti 4:14Act 8:17Act 13:3Act 9:171Ti 5:22

So the word of God continued to spread. The number of disciples in Jerusalem grew rapidly, and a great number of priests became obedient to the faith. Act 19:20Act 12:24Col 1:6Heb 5:9Rom 16:26Act 14:22Jhn 12:42Rom 1:5

So they stirred up the people, elders, and scribes and confronted Stephen. They seized him and brought him before the Sanhedrin, 5 Pro 15:18Act 14:2Mat 26:57Act 13:50Act 16:19-21Act 17:13Act 17:5-6Act 21:27 where they presented false witnesses who said, “This man never stops speaking against this holy place and against the law.
