Water from the Rock
(Numbers 20:1–13)
Then the whole congregation of Israel left the Desert of Sin, 1 moving from place to place as the LORD commanded. They camped at Rephidim, but there was no water for the people to drink. Exo 16:1Exo 19:2Exo 17:8Num 33:12-14 So the people contended with Moses, “Give us water to drink.” Psa 78:181Co 10:9Deu 6:16Psa 78:41Heb 3:9Isa 7:12Act 15:10Mat 4:7
“Why do you contend with me?” Moses replied. “Why do you test the LORD?”
But the people thirsted for water there, and they grumbled against Moses: “Why have you brought us out of Egypt—to make us and our children and livestock die of thirst?” Exo 16:2-3Exo 15:24
Then Moses cried out to the LORD, “What should I do with these people? A little more and they will stone me!” 1Sa 30:6Num 14:10Act 14:19Jhn 10:31Jhn 8:59Act 7:50Exo 15:25Num 16:19
And the LORD said to Moses, “Walk on ahead of the people and take some of the elders of Israel with you. Take along in your hand the staff with which you struck the Nile, and go. Exo 7:19-20Num 20:8-11Ezk 2:6Act 20:23-24 Behold, I will stand there before you by the rock at Horeb. 2 And when you strike the rock, water will come out of it for the people to drink.” 1Co 10:4Neh 9:15Num 20:9-11Psa 105:41Deu 8:15Jhn 4:10Psa 78:15-16Psa 114:8
So Moses did this in the sight of the elders of Israel. He named the place Massah 3and Meribah 4because the Israelites quarreled, and because they tested the LORD, saying, “Is the LORD among us or not?” Psa 81:7Num 20:13Psa 95:8Deu 9:22Exo 17:2Heb 3:8-9Act 7:37-39Num 20:24
The Defeat of the Amalekites
After this, the Amalekites came and attacked the Israelites at Rephidim. Deu 25:17-19Gen 36:121Sa 15:21Sa 30:1Num 24:20Gen 36:16Psa 83:7 So Moses said to Joshua, “Choose some of our men and go out to fight the Amalekites. Tomorrow I will stand on the hilltop with the staff of God in my hand.” Deu 32:44Exo 24:13Exo 4:20Exo 4:2Heb 4:8Act 7:45Exo 17:13Num 11:28
Joshua did as Moses had instructed him and fought against the Amalekites, while Moses, Aaron, and Hur went up to the top of the hill. Exo 24:14Exo 17:12Exo 31:2Jos 11:15Jhn 15:14Jhn 2:5Mat 28:20
As long as Moses held up his hands, Israel prevailed; but when he lowered them, Amalek prevailed. 1Ti 2:8Jas 5:16Luk 18:1Psa 56:9 When Moses’ hands grew heavy, they took a stone and put it under him, and he sat on it. Then Aaron and Hur held his hands up, one on each side, so that his hands remained steady until the sun went down. Isa 35:3Php 1:19Heb 12:122Co 1:11Eph 6:18Mrk 14:37-401Th 5:25Col 4:2
So Joshua overwhelmed Amalek and his army with the sword. Jos 10:42Jos 10:28Jos 10:32Jos 10:37Jos 11:12
Then the LORD said to Moses, “Write this on a scroll as a reminder and recite it to Joshua, because I will utterly blot out the memory of Amalek from under heaven.” Exo 34:271Sa 30:11Sa 30:17Num 24:202Sa 8:12Deu 25:17-19Num 33:21Sa 15:2-3
And Moses built an altar and named it The LORD Is My Banner. 5 Gen 22:14Jdg 6:24Psa 60:4Gen 33:20 “Indeed,” he said, “a hand was lifted up toward the throne of the LORD. The LORD will war against Amalek from generation to generation.” Psa 21:8-11Isa 66:1Act 7:49
