Lot Welcomes the Angels

(Judges 19:1–30)

Now the two angels arrived at Sodom in the evening, and Lot was sitting in the gateway of the city. When Lot saw them, he got up to meet them, bowed facedown, Gen 18:1-5Gen 18:22Heb 13:2Job 31:32 and said, “My lords, please turn aside into the house of your servant; wash your feet and spend the night. Then you can rise early and go on your way.” Gen 18:4Luk 24:28-29Act 16:15Heb 13:2Jdg 19:17-21

“No,” they answered, “we will spend the night in the square.”

But Lot insisted so strongly that they followed him into his house. He prepared a feast for them and baked unleavened bread, and they ate. Gen 18:6-81Sa 28:24Jdg 6:191Co 5:8Exo 12:39Heb 13:22Co 5:142Ki 4:8

Before they had gone to bed, all the men of the city of Sodom, both young and old, surrounded the house. Gen 13:13Pro 4:16Exo 23:2Gen 18:20Exo 16:2Jer 5:1-6Jer 5:31Mat 27:20-25 They called out to Lot, saying, “Where are the men who came to you tonight? Lot went outside to meet them, shutting the door behind him. Jdg 19:23 “Please, my brothers,” he pleaded, “don’t do such a wicked thing! 1Co 6:9-111Sa 30:23-24Act 17:26Deu 23:17Gen 19:4Jdg 19:23Jud 1:7Lev 18:22 Look, I have two daughters who have never slept with a man. Let me bring them to you, and you can do to them as you please. But do not do anything to these men, for they have come under the protection of my roof.” Jdg 19:24Gen 19:31-38Gen 18:5Gen 42:37Isa 58:7Jdg 9:15Mrk 9:6Rom 3:8

“Get out of the way!” they replied. And they declared, “This one came here as a foreigner, and he is already acting like a judge! Now we will treat you worse than them.” And they pressed in on Lot and moved in to break down the door. Exo 2:142Pe 2:7-8Gen 13:12Act 7:26-28Dan 3:19-22Ecc 9:3Jer 6:15Mat 7:6

But the men inside reached out, pulled Lot into the house with them, and shut the door. And they struck the men at the entrance, young and old, with blindness, so that they wearied themselves trying to find the door. 2Ki 6:18Act 13:11Deu 28:28-29Jer 2:36Ecc 10:15Isa 57:10

Lot Flees to Zoar

Then the two men said to Lot, “Do you have anyone else here—a son-in-law, your sons or daughters, or anyone else in the city who belongs to you? Get them out of here, Gen 7:12Pe 2:7Rev 18:42Pe 2:9Gen 19:17Jos 6:22-23Num 16:26Gen 19:14 because we are about to destroy this place. So Lot went out and spoke to the sons-in-law who were pledged in marriage to his daughters. “Get up,” he said. “Get out of this place, for the LORD is about to destroy the city!” But his sons-in-law thought he was joking. Num 16:21Jer 51:6Num 16:26Num 16:452Ch 30:10Rev 18:4-82Ch 36:16Ezk 20:49

At daybreak the angels hurried Lot along, saying, “Get up! And they led them safely out of the city, because of the LORD’s compassion for them. Rom 9:15-16Tit 3:51Ch 16:342Co 1:32Pe 2:9Deu 4:31Eph 2:4-5Exo 34:6

As soon as the men had brought them out, one of them said, “Run for your lives! Do not look back, and do not stop anywhere on the plain! Flee to the mountains, or you will be swept away!” Mat 24:16-18Luk 9:62Php 3:13-14Gen 19:26Gen 19:22Luk 17:31-32Mat 3:7Jer 48:6

But Lot replied, “No, my lords, please! 2Ki 5:11-12Act 10:14Act 9:13Gen 32:26Isa 45:11Jhn 13:6-8 Your servant has indeed found favor in your sight, and you have shown me great kindness by sparing my life. “Very well,” he answered, “I will grant this request as well, and will not demolish the town you indicate. Psa 145:19Job 42:8-9Psa 102:17Psa 34:15Gen 12:2Gen 18:24Gen 4:7Heb 2:17 Hurry! And by the time the sun had risen over the land, Lot had reached Zoar.

The Destruction of Sodom and Gomorrah

(Luke 17:20–37)

Then the LORD rained down sulfur and fire on Sodom and Gomorrah—from the LORD out of the heavens. Deu 29:23Isa 13:192Pe 2:6Amo 4:11Jud 1:7Jer 50:40Ezk 16:49-50Hos 11:8 Thus He destroyed these cities and the entire plain, including all the inhabitants of the cities and everything that grew on the ground. Psa 107:34Gen 14:3Gen 13:10

But Lot’s wife looked back, and she became a pillar of salt. Luk 17:31-32Gen 19:17Heb 10:38Pro 14:14Num 16:38

Early the next morning, Abraham got up and returned to the place where he had stood before the LORD. Hab 2:1Psa 5:3Ezk 16:49-50Gen 18:22-33Heb 2:1 He looked down toward Sodom and Gomorrah and all the land of the plain, and he saw the smoke rising from the land like smoke from a furnace. So when God destroyed the cities of the plain, He remembered Abraham, and He brought Lot out of the catastrophe that destroyed the cities where he had lived. Gen 8:1Deu 9:5Gen 18:23-33Psa 25:72Pe 2:7Hos 11:8Psa 105:42Psa 106:4

Lot and His Daughters

Lot and his two daughters left Zoar and settled in the mountains—for he was afraid to stay in Zoar—where they lived in a cave. Gen 19:17Gen 19:19Deu 34:3Gen 13:10Gen 14:22Gen 49:4Isa 15:5Jas 1:8

One day the older daughter said to the younger, “Our father is old, and there is no man in the land to sleep with us, as is the custom over all the earth. Deu 25:5Gen 16:2Gen 16:4Gen 4:1Gen 6:4Isa 4:1Gen 19:28Gen 38:14-30 Come, let us get our father drunk with wine so we can sleep with him and preserve his line.” Lev 18:6-7Gen 11:3Gen 9:21Hab 2:15-16Mrk 12:19Pro 23:31-33

So that night they got their father drunk with wine, and the firstborn went in and slept with her father; he was not aware when she lay down or when she got up. Hab 2:15-16Lev 18:6-7Pro 20:1Pro 23:29-35

The next day the older daughter said to the younger, “Look, I slept with my father last night. Let us get him drunk with wine again tonight so you can go in and sleep with him and we can preserve our father’s line.” Isa 3:9Jer 3:3Jer 5:3Jer 6:15Jer 8:12

So again that night they got their father drunk with wine, and the younger daughter went in and slept with him; he was not aware when she lay down or when she got up. 1Co 10:11-121Pe 4:7Ecc 7:26Luk 21:34Pro 24:16Psa 8:4

Thus both of Lot’s daughters became pregnant by their father.
