The Birth of Isaac

Now the LORD attended to Sarah as He had said, and the LORD did for Sarah what He had promised. Psa 12:6Gen 18:10Gen 18:14Gal 4:23Gen 17:191Sa 2:21Mat 24:35Tit 1:2 So Sarah conceived and bore a son to Abraham in his old age, at the very time God had promised. Gal 4:22Heb 11:11Act 7:8Gen 17:19Gen 17:21Gen 18:10Gen 18:14Luk 1:24-25

And Abraham gave the name Isaac 1to the son Sarah bore to him. Gen 17:19Gen 21:6Rom 9:7Gen 21:12Heb 11:18Jos 24:3Mat 1:2Act 7:8 When his son Isaac was eight days old, Abraham circumcised him, as God had commanded him. Act 7:8Deu 12:32Exo 12:48Gen 17:10-12Jhn 7:22-23Lev 12:3Luk 1:59Luk 1:6 Abraham was a hundred years old when his son Isaac was born to him. Gen 17:17Gen 17:1Rom 4:19

Then Sarah said, “God has made me laugh, and everyone who hears of this will laugh with me.” Psa 126:2Isa 54:1Gen 17:17Luk 1:58Gal 4:27-28Isa 49:21Luk 1:14Luk 1:46-55 She added, “Who would have told Abraham that Sarah would nurse children? Yet I have borne him a son in his old age.” Gen 18:11-12Isa 66:82Th 1:10Deu 4:32-34Eph 3:10Num 23:23Psa 86:10Psa 86:8

So the child grew and was weaned, and Abraham held a great feast on the day Isaac was weaned. 1Sa 1:22Hos 1:81Ki 3:152Sa 3:20Gen 19:3Gen 26:30Gen 29:22Gen 40:20

Sarah Turns against Hagar

(Galatians 4:21–30)

But Sarah saw that the son whom Hagar the Egyptian had borne to Abraham was mocking her son, 2 Gal 4:29Gen 16:15Gal 4:22Gen 16:12Ch 30:102Ch 36:16Lam 1:7Pro 20:11 and she said to Abraham, “Expel the slave woman and her son, for the slave woman’s son will never share in the inheritance with my son Isaac!” 3 Jhn 8:351Jn 2:19Gal 4:22-311Pe 1:4Gen 36:6-7Gal 3:18Gal 4:7Gen 25:19

Now this matter distressed Abraham greatly because it concerned his son Ishmael. Heb 12:11Gen 17:18Mat 10:372Sa 18:33Gen 22:1-2 But God said to Abraham, “Do not be distressed about the boy and your maidservant. Listen to everything that Sarah tells you, for through Isaac your offspring will be reckoned. 4 Heb 11:18Rom 9:7-8Gen 17:191Sa 8:71Sa 8:9Gen 17:21Isa 46:10 But I will also make a nation of the slave woman’s son, because he is your offspring.” Gen 16:10Gen 17:20Gen 21:18Gen 25:12-18

Early in the morning, Abraham got up, took bread and a skin of water, put them on Hagar’s shoulders, and sent her away with the boy. She left and wandered in the Wilderness of Beersheba. 1Ki 19:3Ecc 9:10Gen 16:7Gen 21:31Gen 25:6Gen 26:31Jhn 8:35Pro 27:14 When the water in the skin was gone, she left the boy under one of the bushes. 2Ki 3:9Exo 15:22-25Jer 14:3Psa 63:1Exo 17:1-3Gen 21:14Isa 44:12 Then she went off and sat down nearby, about a bowshot away, for she said, “I cannot bear to watch the boy die!” And as she sat nearby, she lifted up her voice and wept. 5 Isa 49:151Ki 3:261Sa 24:161Sa 30:4Est 8:6Gen 29:11Jdg 2:4Rut 1:9

Then God heard the voice of the boy, and the angel of God called to Hagar from heaven, “What is wrong, Hagar? Do not be afraid, for God has heard the voice of the boy where he lies. Gen 16:11Psa 50:15Exo 3:7Psa 91:151Sa 11:52Ki 13:232Ki 13:4Exo 14:13 Get up, lift up the boy, and take him by the hand, for I will make him into a great nation.” Gen 21:13Gen 16:101Ch 1:29-31Gen 17:20Gen 25:12-18 Then God opened her eyes, and she saw a well of water. So she went and filled the skin with water and gave the boy a drink. Num 22:312Ki 6:17-20Isa 35:5-6Luk 24:16-31

And God was with the boy, and he grew up and settled in the wilderness and became a great archer. Gen 28:15Gen 39:21Gen 16:12Gen 10:9Gen 17:20Gen 25:27Gen 39:2-3Gen 49:23-24 And while he was dwelling in the Wilderness of Paran, his mother got a wife for him from the land of Egypt. 1Co 7:381Sa 25:1Gen 24:3-4Gen 26:34-35Gen 27:46Jdg 14:2Num 10:12Num 12:16

The Covenant at Beersheba

At that time Abimelech and Phicol the commander of his army said to Abraham, “God is with you in all that you do. Gen 26:26Gen 26:28Jos 3:7Gen 20:21Co 14:25Isa 8:10Rom 8:31Heb 13:5 Now, therefore, swear to me here before God that you will not deal falsely with me or my children or descendants. But when Abraham complained to Abimelech about a well that Abimelech’s servants had seized, Gen 26:15-22Exo 2:15-17Gen 13:7Gen 29:8Jdg 1:15Mat 18:15Pro 17:10Pro 25:9 Abimelech replied, “I do not know who has done this. You did not tell me, so I have not heard about it until today.” 2Ki 5:20-24Gen 13:7

So Abraham brought sheep and cattle and gave them to Abimelech, and the two men made a covenant. 1Sa 18:3Ezk 17:13Gal 3:15Gen 14:22-23Gen 26:28-31Gen 31:44Isa 32:8Pro 17:8 Abraham separated seven ewe lambs from the flock, and Abimelech asked him, “Why have you set apart these seven ewe lambs?” Exo 12:26Gen 33:81Sa 15:14

He replied, “You are to accept the seven ewe lambs from my hand as my witness that I dug this well.” Gen 31:52Gen 31:44-48Jos 22:27-28Jos 24:27 So that place was called Beersheba, 6 because it was there that the two of them swore an oath.
