Joseph and Potiphar’s Wife

Meanwhile, Joseph had been taken down to Egypt, where an Egyptian named Potiphar, an officer of Pharaoh and captain of the guard, bought him from the Ishmaelites who had taken him there. Gen 37:28Psa 105:17Gen 37:25Gen 37:36Act 7:9Gen 45:4 And the LORD was with Joseph, and he became a successful man, serving in the household of his Egyptian master. 1Sa 18:14Psa 91:15Jer 15:20Gen 26:28Act 7:9-10Gen 21:22Gen 26:24Isa 43:2

When his master saw that the LORD was with him and made him prosper in all he did, Psa 1:31Sa 18:142Ch 26:5Gen 30:27Mat 5:16Gen 21:22Gen 26:24Gen 26:28 Joseph found favor in his sight and became his personal attendant. Gen 39:21-22Act 20:28Gen 19:19Gen 24:2Gen 39:8Pro 27:18Gen 18:3Gen 33:10

Potiphar put him in charge of his household and entrusted him with everything he owned. From the time that he put Joseph in charge of his household and all he owned, the LORD blessed the Egyptian’s household on account of him. The LORD’s blessing was on everything he owned, both in his house and in his field. Gen 30:272Sa 6:11-12Act 27:24Gen 12:2Psa 72:17Eph 1:3Psa 21:6Deu 28:3-6 So Potiphar left all that he owned in Joseph’s care; he did not concern himself with anything except the food he ate. 1Sa 16:12Gen 29:17Luk 19:17Pro 31:11Act 7:20Gen 12:14-15Gen 39:23Gen 39:4

Now Joseph was well-built and handsome, and after some time his master’s wife cast her eyes upon Joseph and said, “Sleep with me.” 2Pe 2:142Sa 13:11Ezk 16:341Jn 2:16Ezk 16:32Ezk 23:12-16Ezk 23:5-6Job 31:1

But he refused. “Look,” he said to his master’s wife, “with me here, my master does not concern himself with anything in his house, and he has entrusted everything he owns to my care. Although Potiphar’s wife spoke to Joseph day after day, he refused to go to bed with her or even be near her. 1Pe 2:111Co 15:331Co 6:181Th 5:222Ti 2:22Gen 39:8Pro 2:16Pro 1:15 One day, however, Joseph went into the house to attend to his work, and not a single household servant was inside. Joseph Falsely Imprisoned

When she saw that he had left his cloak in her hand and had run out of the house, she called her household servants. “Look,” she said, “this Hebrew has been brought to us to make sport of us. He came to me so he could sleep with me, but I screamed as loud as I could. 1Pe 2:201Pe 3:14-181Pe 4:14-19Gen 10:21Gen 14:13Gen 39:17Gen 39:7Gen 40:15 When he heard me scream for help, he left his cloak beside me and ran out of the house.”

So Potiphar’s wife kept Joseph’s cloak beside her until his master came home. Psa 37:32Jer 4:22Jer 9:3-5Psa 37:12Tit 3:3 Then she told him the same story: “The Hebrew slave you brought us came to me to make sport of me, Exo 23:11Ki 18:171Ki 21:9-13Exo 20:16Gen 39:14Mat 26:65Pro 12:19Pro 19:5 but when I screamed for help, he left his cloak beside me and ran out of the house.”

When his master heard the story his wife told him, saying, “This is what your slave did to me,” he burned with anger. 2Th 2:11Act 25:16Gen 4:5-6Job 29:16Pro 18:17Pro 29:12Pro 6:34-35Sng 8:7 So Joseph’s master took him and had him thrown into the prison where the king’s prisoners were confined.
