A Warning to the Cities of Judah

At the beginning of the reign of Jehoiakim son of Josiah king of Judah, this word came from the LORD: 2Ch 36:4-5Jer 27:12Ki 23:34-36Jer 1:3Jer 25:1Jer 35:1Jer 36:1 “This is what the LORD says: Stand in the courtyard of the house of the LORD and speak all the words I have commanded you to speak to all the cities of Judah who come to worship there. Do not omit a word. Deu 4:2Act 20:27Mat 28:20Jer 1:17Jer 19:14Act 20:20Act 5:42Jer 7:2 Perhaps they will listen and turn—each from his evil way of life—so that I may relent of the disaster I am planning to bring upon them because of the evil of their deeds. Jer 36:3Isa 1:16-19Jer 18:7-10Jon 4:2Ezk 18:27-30Jer 36:7Jon 3:8-101Ki 21:27

And you are to tell them that this is what the LORD says: ‘If you do not listen to Me and walk in My law, which I have set before you, 1Ki 9:6Isa 1:20Jer 44:102Ch 7:19-20Deu 11:32Deu 28:15-68Deu 29:18-28Deu 31:16-18 and if you do not listen to the words of My servants the prophets, whom I have sent you again and again 1even though you did not listen, Jer 11:72Ki 9:7Ezr 9:11Jer 25:3-4Jer 7:13Jer 7:25Amo 3:7Dan 9:6-10 then I will make this house like Shiloh, and I will make this city an object of cursing among all the nations of the earth.’” 2Ki 22:19Jer 24:9Isa 65:15Jer 25:181Sa 4:10-121Sa 4:19-22Dan 9:11Jer 7:12-14

Jeremiah Threatened with Death

Now the priests and prophets and all the people heard Jeremiah speaking these words in the house of the LORD, Jer 5:31Mic 3:11Act 4:1-6Act 5:17Ezk 22:25-26Jer 23:11-15Mat 21:15Zep 3:4 and as soon as he had finished telling all the people everything the LORD had commanded him to say, the priests and prophets and all the people seized him, shouting, “You must surely die! Lam 4:13-142Ch 36:16Act 5:33Act 7:52Jer 11:19-21Jer 12:5-6Jer 18:18Jer 2:30 How dare you prophesy in the name of the LORD that this house will become like Shiloh and this city will be desolate and deserted!” 2Ch 25:16Act 13:50Act 16:19-22Act 17:5-8Act 19:24-32Act 21:30Act 4:17-19Act 6:14

And all the people assembled against Jeremiah in the house of the LORD.

When the officials of Judah heard these things, they went up from the king’s palace to the house of the LORD and sat there at the entrance of the New Gate. Jer 36:102Ki 15:35Ezk 22:27Ezk 22:6Jer 26:16-17Jer 26:24Jer 34:19Jer 36:12-19

Then the priests and prophets said to the officials and all the people, “This man is worthy of death, for he has prophesied against this city, as you have heard with your own ears!” Jer 38:4Deu 18:20Mat 26:66Act 6:11-14Act 22:22Act 24:4-9Act 25:2-13Jer 18:23

But Jeremiah said to all the officials and all the people, “The LORD sent me to prophesy against this house and against this city all the words that you have heard. Act 4:19Act 5:29Jer 26:15Jer 1:17-18Jer 26:2Amo 7:15-17Jer 19:1-3 So now, correct your ways and deeds, and obey the voice of the LORD your God, so that He might relent of the disaster He has pronounced against you. Isa 1:19Jon 3:9Jon 4:2Heb 5:9Hos 14:1-4Isa 55:7Jer 18:8Jer 26:19 As for me, here I am in your hands; do to me what you think is good and right. Jos 9:252Sa 15:26Jer 38:5Dan 3:16 But know for certain that if you put me to death, you will bring innocent blood upon yourselves, upon this city, and upon its residents; for truly the LORD has sent me to speak all these words in your hearing.” Num 35:33Pro 6:17Act 7:60Jer 22:3Jer 7:6Mat 26:25Rev 16:61Th 2:15-16

Jeremiah Spared from Death

Then the officials and all the people told the priests and prophets, “This man is not worthy of death, for he has spoken to us in the name of the LORD our God!” Act 23:29Act 23:9Act 25:25Act 5:34-39Jer 36:19Jer 36:25Act 26:31-32Est 4:14

Some of the elders of the land stood up and said to the whole assembly of the people, Act 5:34Mic 1:1 “Micah the Moreshite prophesied in the days of Hezekiah king of Judah and told all the people of Judah that this is what the LORD of Hosts says: Mic 1:1Neh 4:2Zec 8:3Jer 17:3Mic 3:12Isa 2:2-3Psa 79:12Ki 19:25

‘Zion will be plowed like a field,

Jerusalem will become a heap of rubble,

and the temple mount a wooded ridge.’ 2

Did Hezekiah king of Judah or anyone else in Judah put him to death? Did Hezekiah not fear the LORD and seek His favor, and did not the LORD relent of the disaster He had pronounced against them? But we are about to bring great harm on ourselves!” 2Sa 24:16Exo 32:142Ch 29:6-11Isa 37:15-202Ch 32:25-26Act 5:39Isa 37:1Isa 37:4

The Prophet Uriah

Now there was another man prophesying in the name of the LORD, Uriah son of Shemaiah from Kiriath-jearim. He prophesied against this city and against this land the same things that Jeremiah did. 3 1Sa 7:2Jos 9:171Sa 6:21Jos 15:60Jos 18:14 King Jehoiakim and all his mighty men and officials heard his words, and the king sought to put him to death. But when Uriah found out about it, he fled in fear and went to Egypt. Mat 10:232Ch 16:10Jer 36:26Mat 14:51Ki 19:1-3Mat 10:28Mat 10:39Mat 16:25-26

Then King Jehoiakim sent men to Egypt: Elnathan son of Achbor along with some other men. 2Ki 22:122Ki 22:14Jer 36:12Jer 36:25Pro 29:12Psa 12:8 They brought Uriah out of Egypt and took him to King Jehoiakim, who had him put to the sword and his body thrown into the burial place of the common people. Nevertheless, Ahikam son of Shaphan supported Jeremiah, so he was not handed over to the people to be put to death. 1Ki 18:42Ki 22:12-14Jer 1:18-19Jer 39:14Jer 40:5-72Ch 34:202Ki 25:22Act 23:10
