Jeremiah Warns Zedekiah
Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon made Zedekiah son of Josiah the king of Judah, and he reigned in place of Coniah 1son of Jehoiakim. Jer 22:242Ki 24:172Ki 24:121Ch 3:15-162Ch 36:9-10Ezk 17:12-21Jer 22:28Jer 24:1 But he and his officers and the people of the land refused to obey the words that the LORD had spoken through Jeremiah the prophet. 1Th 4:82Ch 36:12-162Ki 24:19-20Pro 29:121Ki 14:181Ki 16:72Sa 10:22Sa 12:25
Yet King Zedekiah sent Jehucal 2son of Shelemiah and Zephaniah the priest, the son of Maaseiah, to Jeremiah the prophet with the message, “Please pray to the LORD our God for us!” Jer 21:1-21Ki 13:6Jer 2:27Jer 29:25Jer 42:2-4Jer 42:20Jer 52:241Sa 12:19
Now Jeremiah was free to come and go among the people, for they had not yet put him in prison. Jer 37:15Jer 32:2-3 Pharaoh’s army had left Egypt, and when the Chaldeans 3who were besieging Jerusalem heard the report, they withdrew from Jerusalem. Ezk 17:152Ki 24:7Jer 34:21Jer 37:11Jer 37:7
Then the word of the LORD came to Jeremiah the prophet: “This is what the LORD, the God of Israel, says that you are to tell the king of Judah, who sent you to Me: Behold, Pharaoh’s army, which has marched out to help you, will go back to its own land of Egypt. Lam 4:172Ki 22:18Ezk 17:17Isa 31:1-3Jer 21:2Jer 37:3Ezk 29:16Ezk 29:6-7 Then the Chaldeans will return and fight against this city. They will capture it and burn it down. Jer 38:23Jer 39:2-8Jer 32:29Jer 34:21-22
This is what the LORD says: Do not deceive yourselves by saying, ‘The Chaldeans will go away for good,’ for they will not! Oba 1:32Th 2:3Gal 6:3Gal 6:7Jas 1:22Jer 29:8Mat 24:4-5Eph 5:6 Indeed, if you were to strike down the entire army of the Chaldeans that is fighting against you, and only wounded men remained in their tents, they would still get up and burn this city down.” Isa 30:17Jer 50:45Jol 2:11Lev 26:36-38Isa 10:4Isa 13:15Isa 14:19Jer 21:4-7
Jeremiah Imprisoned
When the Chaldean army withdrew from Jerusalem for fear of Pharaoh’s army, Jer 37:5 Jeremiah started to leave Jerusalem to go to the land of Benjamin to claim his portion there 4among the people. Jer 1:11Ch 6:601Ki 19:31Ki 19:9Jer 32:8-9Jos 21:17-18Mat 10:23Neh 6:11 But when he reached the Gate of Benjamin, the captain of the guard, whose name was Irijah son of Shelemiah, the son of Hananiah, seized him and said, “You are deserting to the Chaldeans!” Jer 38:7Zec 14:10Act 24:13Act 24:5-9Act 6:11Jer 18:18Jer 20:10Jer 21:9
“That is a lie,” Jeremiah replied. “I am not deserting to the Chaldeans!” Jer 40:4-6Mat 5:11-12Psa 27:12Psa 52:1-21Pe 3:161Pe 4:14-16Luk 6:22-23Luk 6:26
But Irijah would not listen to him; instead, he arrested Jeremiah and took him to the officials.
The officials were angry with Jeremiah, and they beat him and placed him in jail in the house of Jonathan the scribe, for it had been made into a prison. Jer 38:262Ch 16:102Ch 18:26Act 5:18Gen 39:20Jer 20:1-3Jer 26:16Mat 21:35
So Jeremiah went into a cell in the dungeon and remained there a long time. Jer 38:6Jer 38:10-13Gen 40:15Lam 3:53Lam 3:55
Later, King Zedekiah sent for Jeremiah and received him in his palace, where he asked him privately, “Is there a word from the LORD?” Jer 21:71Ki 14:1-41Ki 22:16Ezk 12:12-13Jer 21:1-2Jer 24:8Jer 37:3Jer 38:14-16
“There is,” Jeremiah replied. “You will be delivered into the hand of the king of Babylon.”
Then Jeremiah asked King Zedekiah, “How have I sinned against you or your servants or these people, that you have put me in prison? Act 25:8Jhn 10:32Act 25:11Act 25:25Dan 6:221Sa 24:9-151Sa 26:18-21Act 23:1 Where are your prophets who prophesied to you, claiming, ‘The king of Babylon will not come against you or this land’? Jer 2:28Jer 28:10-172Ki 3:13Jer 14:13-15Jer 23:17Jer 27:14-18Jer 28:1-5Jer 29:31 But now please listen, O my lord the king. May my petition come before you. Do not send me back to the house of Jonathan the scribe, or I will die there.” Jer 36:7Act 23:16-22Act 25:10-11Act 28:18-19Jer 26:15Jer 38:26Jer 38:6-9
So King Zedekiah gave orders for Jeremiah to be placed in the courtyard of the guard and given a loaf of bread daily from the street of the bakers, until all the bread in the city was gone. So Jeremiah remained in the courtyard of the guard. Jer 38:13Jer 38:28Jer 32:2Jer 38:9Jer 52:62Ki 25:3Isa 33:16Job 5:20
