Judgment on the Jews in Egypt
This is the word that came to Jeremiah concerning all the Jews living in the land of Egypt 1—in Migdol, Tahpanhes, and Memphis 2—and in the land of Pathros: 3 Jer 46:14Exo 14:2Isa 11:11Isa 19:13Ezk 29:14Ezk 30:14Ezk 30:16Ezk 30:18 “This is what the LORD of Hosts, the God of Israel, says: You have seen all the disaster that I brought against Jerusalem and all the cities of Judah; and behold, they lie today in ruins and desolation Isa 6:11Jer 34:22Jer 9:11Jer 4:7Mic 3:122Ki 21:13Deu 29:2Exo 19:4 because of the evil they have done. Deu 29:26Deu 13:6Deu 32:17Dan 9:5Ezk 8:17-18Jer 2:17-19Jer 44:8Neh 9:33
They provoked Me to anger by continuing to burn incense and to serve other gods that neither they nor you nor your fathers ever knew. Yet I sent you all My servants the prophets again and again, 4 saying: ‘Do not do this detestable thing that I hate.’ Jer 26:5Jer 7:13Jer 7:252Ch 36:15Ezk 16:47Ezk 8:10Jer 16:18Jer 29:19
But they did not listen or incline their ears; they did not turn from their wickedness or stop burning incense to other gods. Jer 11:10Jer 19:132Ch 36:16Isa 48:18Isa 48:4Jer 11:8Jer 44:17-21Jer 7:24 Therefore My wrath and anger poured out and burned in the cities of Judah and in the streets of Jerusalem, so that they have become the desolate ruin they are today. Jer 7:20Ezk 8:18Isa 51:17Isa 51:20Isa 6:11Jer 21:5Jer 42:18Jer 7:34
So now, this is what the LORD God of Hosts, the God of Israel, says: Why are you doing such great harm to yourselves by cutting off from Judah man and woman, child and infant, leaving yourselves without a remnant? Hab 2:10Jer 51:22Ezk 33:11Num 16:381Sa 15:3Deu 32:25Jdg 21:11Jer 44:14 Why are you provoking Me to anger by the work of your hands by burning incense to other gods in the land of Egypt, where you have gone to reside? As a result, you will be cut off and will become an object of cursing and reproach among all the nations of the earth. Have you forgotten the wickedness of your fathers and of the kings of Judah and their wives, as well as the wickedness that you and your wives committed in the land of Judah and in the streets of Jerusalem? Jer 7:17-18Dan 9:5-8Ezr 9:7-15Jer 44:15-19Jer 44:21Jos 22:17-20 To this day they have not humbled themselves or shown reverence, nor have they followed My instruction or the statutes that I set before you and your fathers. Pro 28:141Pe 5:6Jer 8:12Rev 15:41Ki 21:292Ch 12:6-122Ch 32:262Ch 33:12
Therefore this is what the LORD of Hosts, the God of Israel, says: I will set My face to bring disaster and to cut off all Judah. Jer 21:10Amo 9:4Lev 17:10Lev 20:5-6Lev 26:17Psa 34:16Ezk 14:7-8Ezk 15:7 And I will take away the remnant of Judah who have resolved to go to the land of Egypt to reside there; they will meet their end. They will all fall by the sword or be consumed by famine. From the least to the greatest, they will die by sword or famine; and they will become an object of cursing and horror, of vilification and reproach. Jer 42:15-18Jer 42:22Isa 65:15Hos 4:6Isa 1:28Jer 18:16Jer 29:18Jer 29:22
I will punish those who live in the land of Egypt, just as I punished Jerusalem, by sword and famine and plague, Jer 11:22Jer 43:11Jer 44:27-28Jer 21:9Jer 24:10Jer 42:18 so that none of the remnant of Judah who have gone to reside in Egypt will escape or survive to return to the land of Judah, where they long to return and live; for none will return except a few fugitives.” Jer 22:26-27Rom 9:27Isa 10:20Isa 4:2Jer 42:17Jer 44:27-28Heb 2:3Isa 30:1-3
The Stubbornness of the People
Then all the men who knew that their wives were burning incense to other gods, and all the women standing by—a great assembly—along with all the people living in the land of Egypt and in Pathros, 5 said to Jeremiah, Jer 5:1-5Pro 11:212Pe 2:1-2Gen 19:4Mat 7:13Neh 13:26Isa 1:5 “As for the word you have spoken to us in the name of the LORD, we will not listen to you! Luk 19:27Job 21:14-15Dan 3:15Exo 5:2Isa 3:9Jer 11:10Jer 11:8Jer 16:15-17 Instead, we will do everything we vowed to do: We will burn incense to the Queen of Heaven and offer drink offerings to her, just as we, our fathers, our kings, and our officials did in the cities of Judah and in the streets of Jerusalem. Jer 7:18Neh 9:342Ki 17:16Deu 23:23Exo 16:3Ezk 20:8Hos 2:5-9Jer 44:21
At that time we had plenty of food and good things, and we saw no disaster. But from the time we stopped burning incense to the Queen of Heaven and pouring out drink offerings to her, we have lacked everything and have been perishing by sword and famine.” Mal 3:13-15Num 11:5-6Jer 40:12Job 21:14-15Psa 73:9-15
“Moreover,” said the women, “when we burned incense to the Queen of Heaven and poured out drink offerings to her, was it without our husbands’ knowledge that we made sacrificial cakes in her image and poured out drink offerings to her?” Jer 7:18Jer 44:151Ki 21:252Ch 21:6Deu 7:3-4Gen 3:11-12Gen 3:16-17Gen 3:6
Calamity for the Jews
Then Jeremiah said to all the people, both men and women, who were answering him, “As for the incense you burned in the cities of Judah and in the streets of Jerusalem—you, your fathers, your kings, your officials, and the people of the land—did the LORD not remember and bring this to mind? Jer 44:17Isa 64:9Jer 11:13Jer 14:10Jer 44:9Psa 79:8Amo 8:7Hos 7:2 So the LORD could no longer endure the evil deeds and detestable acts you committed, and your land became a desolation, a horror, and an object of cursing, without inhabitant, as it is this day. Jer 25:18Isa 43:24Isa 7:13Jer 18:16Jer 25:11Jer 25:38Jer 44:12Mal 2:17 Because you burned incense and sinned against the LORD, and did not obey the voice of the LORD or walk in His instruction, His statutes, and His testimonies, this disaster has befallen you, as you see today.” 1Ki 9:9Dan 9:11-12Neh 13:18Psa 119:1501Co 10:202Ch 36:162Co 6:16Jer 32:31-33
Then Jeremiah said to all the people, including all the women, “Hear the word of the LORD, all those of Judah who are in the land of Egypt. Nevertheless, hear the word of the LORD, all you people of Judah living in Egypt: Behold, I have sworn by My great name, says the LORD, that never again will any man of Judah living in the land of Egypt invoke My name or say, ‘As surely as the Lord GOD lives.’ Ezk 20:39Gen 22:16Heb 6:13Psa 50:16Amo 6:8Isa 48:1-2Jer 4:2Jer 5:2
