Job’s Character and Wealth

(James 5:7–12)

There was a man in the land of Uz whose name was Job. And this man was blameless and upright, fearing God and shunning evil. Job’s sons would take turns holding feasts in their homes, and they would invite their three sisters to eat and drink with them. Heb 13:1 Psa 133:1

And when the days of feasting were over, Job would send for his children to purify them, rising early in the morning to offer burnt offerings for all of them. Satan’s First Attack

One day the sons of God came to present themselves before the LORD, and Satan ¹also came with them. Job 2:1 Job 38:7 Zec 3:1 Rev 12:9-10 1Ki 22:19 1Ch 21:1 Gen 6:4 Jhn 6:70

“From roaming through the earth,” he replied, “and walking back and forth in it.”

Then the LORD said to Satan, “Have you considered My servant Job? For there is no one on earth like him, a man who is blameless and upright, who fears God and shuns evil.” Job 2:3 Job 1:1 Num 12:7-8 Pro 8:13 2Ki 23:25 Isa 1:16 Job 8:20 Job 23:11-12

You have blessed the work of his hands, and his possessions have increased in the land. Then Satan went out from the presence of the LORD.

Job Loses His Children and Possessions

One day, while Job’s sons and daughters were eating and drinking wine in their oldest brother’s house, Luk 21:34 Pro 27:1 Ecc 9:12 Luk 17:27-29 Job 1:4 Luk 12:19-20 a messenger came and reported to Job: “While the oxen were plowing and the donkeys were grazing nearby, 1Sa 4:17 Jer 51:31 2Sa 15:13 the Sabeans swooped down and took them away. While he was still speaking, another messenger came and reported: “The fire of God fell from heaven. It burned and consumed the sheep and the servants, and I alone have escaped to tell you!” 2Ki 1:12 Gen 19:24 1Ki 18:38 Lev 10:2 2Ki 1:10 Amo 7:4 Lev 9:24 Num 11:1-3

While he was still speaking, another messenger came and reported: “The Chaldeans formed three bands, raided the camels, and took them away. They put the servants to the sword, and I alone have escaped to tell you!” Gen 11:28 Hab 1:6 Gen 11:31 Isa 23:13 2Sa 1:3 Job 1:15

While he was still speaking, another messenger came and reported: “Your sons and daughters were eating and drinking wine in their oldest brother’s house, Job 1:4 Job 1:13 Lam 1:12 Psa 34:19 2Sa 13:28 Amo 4:6-11 Ecc 9:2 Isa 28:19 when suddenly a mighty wind swept in from the desert and struck the four corners of the house. “Naked I came from my mother’s womb,

and naked I will return.

The LORD gave, and the LORD has taken away.

Blessed be the name of the LORD.”
