Job’s Character and Wealth

(James 5:7–12)

There was a man in the land of Uz whose name was Job. And this man was blameless and upright, fearing God and shunning evil. Jas 5:11Ezk 14:14Ezk 14:20Job 28:28Job 2:3Gen 6:9Job 1:8Job 23:11-12 He had seven sons and three daughters, Job 42:13Psa 127:3-5Est 5:11Job 13:13Psa 107:38Psa 128:3 and he owned 7,000 sheep, 3,000 camels, 500 yoke of oxen, 500 female donkeys, and a very large number of servants. Job was the greatest man of all the people of the East. Job 29:25Job 42:12Jdg 6:31Ki 4:30Num 23:7Pro 10:22Gen 12:16Gen 12:5

Job’s sons would take turns holding feasts in their homes, and they would invite their three sisters to eat and drink with them. Heb 13:1Psa 133:1

And when the days of feasting were over, Job would send for his children to purify them, rising early in the morning to offer burnt offerings for all of them. For Job thought, “Perhaps my children have sinned and cursed God in their hearts.” This was Job’s regular practice. Job 42:8Gen 8:201Sa 16:5Eph 6:18Gen 35:2-3Job 8:41Ki 21:101Ki 21:13

Satan’s First Attack

One day the sons of God came to present themselves before the LORD, and Satan 1also came with them. Job 2:1Job 38:7Zec 3:1Rev 12:9-101Ki 22:191Ch 21:1Gen 6:4Jhn 6:70

“Where have you come from?” said the LORD to Satan. 1Pe 5:8Job 2:2Mat 12:43Rev 12:12-17Rev 12:9Rev 20:82Ki 5:25Zec 1:10-11

“From roaming through the earth,” he replied, “and walking back and forth in it.”

Then the LORD said to Satan, “Have you considered My servant Job? For there is no one on earth like him, a man who is blameless and upright, who fears God and shuns evil.” Job 2:3Job 1:1Num 12:7-8Pro 8:132Ki 23:25Isa 1:16Job 8:20Job 23:11-12

Satan answered the LORD, “Does Job fear God for nothing? 1Ti 4:8Mat 16:261Ti 6:6Job 1:21Job 21:14-15Job 2:10Mal 1:10 Have You not placed a hedge on every side around him and his household and all that he owns? Then Satan went out from the presence of the LORD.

Job Loses His Children and Possessions

One day, while Job’s sons and daughters were eating and drinking wine in their oldest brother’s house, Luk 21:34Pro 27:1Ecc 9:12Luk 17:27-29Job 1:4Luk 12:19-20 a messenger came and reported to Job: “While the oxen were plowing and the donkeys were grazing nearby, 1Sa 4:17Jer 51:312Sa 15:13 the Sabeans swooped down and took them away. Then Job stood up, tore his robe, and shaved his head. He fell to the ground and worshiped, 1Pe 5:62Sa 12:16-20Gen 37:34Ezr 9:3Gen 37:29Deu 9:18Mat 26:392Ch 7:3 saying: Ecc 5:151Ti 6:71Th 5:18Jas 1:17Job 2:10Psa 49:17Ecc 12:7Eph 5:20

In all this, Job did not sin or charge God with wrongdoing. Jas 1:12Job 2:101Pe 1:7Jas 1:4Rom 9:20Job 34:18-19Job 40:4-8Job 34:10
