The LORD’s Power Shown in Leviathan
“Can you pull in Leviathan with a hook Isa 27:1Job 3:8Psa 104:26Psa 74:14
or tie down his tongue with a rope?
Can you put a cord through his nose Isa 37:29Ezk 29:4-52Ki 19:28Isa 27:1
or pierce his jaw with a hook?
Will he beg you for mercy Isa 30:10Pro 15:1Pro 18:23Pro 25:15Psa 55:21
or speak to you softly?
Will he make a covenant with you Exo 21:6Deu 15:171Ki 20:31-34Gen 1:28Psa 8:5-6
to take him as a slave for life?
Can you pet him like a bird Jdg 16:25-30Job 28:11
or put him on a leash for your maidens?
Will traders barter for him Jdg 14:11
or divide him among the merchants?
Can you fill his hide with harpoons
or his head with fishing spears?
If you lay a hand on him, 1Ki 20:112Ki 10:4Luk 14:31-32
you will remember the battle and never repeat it!
Surely hope of overcoming him is false. 1Sa 3:11Deu 28:34Isa 28:19Luk 21:11
Is not the sight of him overwhelming?
No one is so fierce as to rouse Leviathan. Job 9:41Co 10:22Gen 49:9Jer 12:5Job 3:8Job 40:9Num 24:9Psa 2:11-12
Then who is able to stand against Me?
Who has given to Me that I should repay him? 1 Rom 11:35Psa 24:11Ch 29:11-14Deu 10:14Job 35:7Psa 50:121Co 10:26Exo 19:5
Everything under heaven is Mine.
I cannot keep silent about his limbs, Gen 1:25
his power and graceful form.
Who can strip off his outer coat? 2Ki 19:28Jas 3:3Psa 32:9
Who can approach him with a bridle? 2
Who can open his jaws, Dan 7:7Ecc 12:4Job 38:10Pro 30:14Psa 57:4Psa 58:6
ringed by his fearsome teeth?
His rows of scales are his pride, Jer 9:23Rev 5:2-3Rev 5:5
tightly sealed together.
One scale is so near to another
that no air can pass between them.
They are joined to one another;
they clasp and cannot be separated.
His snorting flashes with light, Job 3:9Rev 1:14
and his eyes are like the rays of dawn.
Firebrands stream from his mouth; Psa 18:8
fiery sparks shoot forth!
Smoke billows from his nostrils Jer 1:13-14
as from a boiling pot over burning reeds.
His breath sets coals ablaze, Psa 18:8Hab 3:5Isa 30:33Psa 18:12
and flames pour from his mouth.
Strength resides in his neck, 1Co 15:55-57Hos 13:14Job 39:19Job 40:16
and dismay leaps before him.
The folds of his flesh are tightly joined;
they are firm and immovable.
His chest is as hard as a rock, Isa 48:4Jer 5:3Zec 7:12
as hard as a lower millstone!
When Leviathan rises up, the mighty are terrified; Jon 1:4-6Psa 107:28
they withdraw before his thrashing.
The sword that reaches him has no effect, Job 39:21-24
nor does the spear or dart or arrow.
He regards iron as straw
and bronze as rotten wood.
No arrow can make him flee; Hab 1:10Job 39:7
slingstones become like chaff to him.
A club is regarded as straw, 2Ch 26:14
and he laughs at the sound of the lance. 3
His undersides are jagged potsherds, Isa 41:15
spreading out the mud like a threshing sledge.
He makes the depths seethe like a cauldron;
he makes the sea like a jar of ointment.
He leaves a glistening wake behind him; Gen 1:15Gen 1:2Gen 15:15Gen 25:8Gen 42:38Job 28:14Job 38:16Job 38:30
one would think the deep had white hair!
Nothing on earth is his equal— Job 40:19
a creature devoid of fear!
He looks down on all the haughty; Ezk 29:3Psa 73:6Job 26:12Job 28:8Exo 5:2Isa 28:1Psa 73:10Rev 12:1-3
he is king over all the proud.”
