Jesus Heals the Man Born Blind

Now as Jesus was passing by, He saw a man blind from birth, and His disciples asked Him, “Rabbi, who sinned, this man or his parents, that he was born blind?” Luk 13:2Jhn 9:34Act 28:4Exo 20:5Mat 16:14Mat 23:7

Jesus answered, “Neither this man nor his parents sinned, but this happened so that the works of God would be displayed in him. Jhn 11:4Jhn 11:40Ecc 9:1-2Job 2:3-6Job 42:7Mat 11:5Act 4:21Act 28:4 While it is daytime, we must do 1the works of Him who sent Me. Night is coming, when no one can work. Jhn 12:35Eph 5:16Jhn 4:34Ecc 9:10Jhn 11:9-10Gal 6:10Jhn 17:4Col 4:5 While I am in the world, I am the light of the world.” Jhn 8:12Jhn 12:46Act 13:47Jhn 1:4-9Act 26:18Eph 5:14Isa 42:6-7Rev 21:23

When Jesus had said this, He spit on the ground, made some mud, and applied it to the man’s eyes. Mrk 7:33Mrk 8:23Rev 3:18 Then He told him, “Go, wash in the Pool of Siloam” (which means “Sent”). So the man went and washed, and came back seeing. Isa 35:5Jhn 11:37Jhn 9:11Act 26:18Isa 8:6Psa 146:8Exo 4:11Isa 42:7

At this, his neighbors and those who had formerly seen him begging began to ask, “Isn’t this the man who used to sit and beg?” 1Sa 2:81Sa 21:11Act 3:2-11Luk 16:20-22Luk 18:35Mrk 10:46Rut 1:19

Some claimed that he was, but others said, “No, he just looks like him.”

But the man kept saying, “I am the one.”

“How then were your eyes opened?” they asked. Ecc 11:5Mrk 4:271Co 15:35Jhn 3:9Jhn 9:15Jhn 9:21Jhn 9:26

He answered, “The man they call Jesus made some mud and anointed my eyes, and He told me to go to Siloam and wash. So I went and washed and received my sight.” Jhn 9:6-7Jhn 9:27Jer 36:17

“Where is He?” they asked. Exo 2:18-20Jhn 5:11-13Jhn 7:11

“I do not know,” he answered.

The Pharisees Investigate the Healing

They brought to the Pharisees the man who had been blind. Jhn 12:42Jhn 11:46-47Jhn 11:57Jhn 12:19Jhn 8:3-8 Now the day on which Jesus had made the mud and opened his eyes was a Sabbath. Jhn 5:9Luk 13:10-17Mat 12:1-14Jhn 5:16Jhn 7:21-23Luk 14:1Luk 6:1-11Mrk 2:23 So the Pharisees also asked him how he had received his sight. Jhn 9:10-11Jhn 9:26-27

The man answered, “He put mud on my eyes, and I washed, and now I can see.”

Because of this, some of the Pharisees said, “This man is not from God, for He does not keep the Sabbath.” Jhn 10:19Jhn 7:43Jhn 3:2Jhn 7:12Mat 12:2Jhn 14:11Jhn 15:24Jhn 5:36

But others said, “How can a sinful man perform such signs?”

And there was division among them. So once again they asked the man who had been blind, “What do you say about Him, since it was your eyes He opened?” Act 3:22-26Jhn 4:19Jhn 6:14Act 10:38Act 2:22Luk 24:19Mat 21:11

“He is a prophet,” the man replied.

The Jews still did not believe that the man had been blind and had received his sight until they summoned his parents Heb 3:15-19Gen 19:14Heb 4:11Isa 26:11Isa 53:1Jhn 1:19Jhn 12:37-40Jhn 5:44 and asked, “Is this your son, the one you say was born blind? So how is it that he can now see?” Act 4:14Jhn 9:8-9Act 3:10

His parents answered, “We know he is our son, and we know he was born blind. But how he can now see or who opened his eyes, we do not know. Ask him. He is old enough to speak for himself.”

His parents said this because they were afraid of the Jews. For the Jews had already determined that anyone who confessed Jesus as the Christ would be put out of the synagogue. Jhn 16:2Jhn 7:13Luk 6:22Jhn 12:42-43Jhn 9:34Act 4:18Act 5:13Act 5:40 That was why his parents said, “He is old enough. Ask him.” Jhn 9:21

So a second time they called for the man who had been blind and said, “Give glory to God! We know that this man is a sinner.” Jhn 9:16Jos 7:19Jhn 8:492Co 5:21Jhn 19:6Psa 50:14-151Sa 6:5-9Isa 66:5

He answered, “Whether He is a sinner I do not know. There is one thing I do know: I was blind, but now I see!” 1Jn 5:10Jhn 9:30Jhn 5:11

“What did He do to you?” they asked. “How did He open your eyes?”

He replied, “I already told you, and you did not listen. Why do you want to hear it again? Do you also want to become His disciples?” Luk 22:67Jhn 9:10-15

Then they heaped insults on him and said, “You are His disciple; we are disciples of Moses. 1Co 4:121Co 6:10Rom 2:171Pe 2:23Act 6:11-14Isa 51:7Jhn 5:45-47Jhn 7:19 We know that God spoke to Moses, but we do not know where this man is from.” Jhn 8:141Ki 22:272Ki 9:11Act 22:22Act 26:22Act 7:35Deu 34:10Heb 3:2-5

“That is remarkable indeed!” the man said. “You do not know where He is from, and yet He opened my eyes. Psa 119:18Jhn 12:37Isa 29:18Isa 29:14Jhn 3:102Co 4:6Isa 35:5Luk 7:22 We know that God does not listen to sinners, but He does listen to the one who worships Him and does His will. They replied, “You were born in utter sin, and you are instructing us?” And they threw him out. Jhn 9:2Jhn 9:22Isa 66:5Gen 19:9Job 25:4Luk 18:17Psa 51:51Co 5:13

Spiritual Blindness

When Jesus heard that they had thrown him out, He found the man and said, “Do you believe in the Son of Man 2?” Jhn 20:311Jn 5:13Rom 10:201Jn 4:15Jhn 10:361Jn 5:101Jn 5:201Jn 5:5

Then Jesus declared, “For judgment I have come into this world, so that the blind may see and those who see may become blind.” 3 Jhn 3:19Act 26:18Jhn 12:46Jhn 8:121Jn 2:11Luk 4:18Jhn 12:40-41Luk 1:79
