Jephthah Defeats Ephraim
Then the men of Ephraim assembled and crossed the Jordan to Zaphon. They said to Jephthah, “Why have you crossed over to fight the Ammonites without calling us to go with you? We will burn your house down with you inside!” Jdg 8:1Jas 3:16Jhn 10:32Jas 4:1-2Jdg 14:152Sa 19:41-43Ecc 4:4Jdg 15:6
But Jephthah replied, “My people and I had a serious conflict with the Ammonites, and when I called, you did not save me out of their hands. Jdg 11:12-33 When I saw that you would not save me, I risked my life and crossed over to the Ammonites, and the LORD delivered them into my hand. Why then have you come today to fight against me?” 1Sa 19:51Sa 28:21Job 13:14Psa 119:1092Ch 13:12Jdg 11:27Jdg 9:17Rev 12:11
Jephthah then gathered all the men of Gilead and fought against Ephraim. And the men of Gilead struck them down because the Ephraimites had said, “You Gileadites are fugitives in Ephraim, living in the territories of Ephraim and Manasseh.” 1Sa 25:10Pro 12:13Deu 3:12-17Jdg 11:10Neh 4:4Num 32:39-40Pro 15:1Psa 78:9
The Gileadites captured the fords of the Jordan leading to Ephraim, and whenever a fugitive from Ephraim would say, “Let me cross over,” the Gileadites would ask him, “Are you an Ephraimite?” Jdg 3:28Jos 22:11Jdg 7:24Jos 2:7
If he answered, “No,” they told him, “Please say Shibboleth.” Ecc 10:12Mat 12:25Gal 5:15Isa 27:12Mat 26:73Mrk 14:70Pro 17:14Pro 18:19
If he said, “Sibboleth,” because he could not pronounce it correctly, they seized him and killed him at the fords of the Jordan. So at that time 42,000 Ephraimites were killed.
Jephthah judged Israel six years, and when he died, he was buried in one of the cities of Gilead. 1
