Israel Rebuked at Bochim
Now the angel 1of the LORD went up from Gilgal to Bochim and said, “I brought you up out of Egypt and led you into the land that I had promised to your fathers, and I said, ‘I will never break My covenant with you, Exo 20:2Exo 23:20Gen 17:7-8Lev 26:42Psa 105:44-45Act 7:30-33Exo 14:14Exo 14:19 and you are not to make a covenant with the people of this land, but you shall tear down their altars.’ Deu 7:2-4Jer 2:36Deu 7:16Ezr 9:1-3Jer 2:5Num 33:52-532Co 6:14-17Deu 12:2-3
Yet you have not obeyed My voice. What is this you have done? So now I tell you that I will not drive out these people before you; they will be thorns in your sides, and their gods will be a snare to you.” Jos 23:13Num 33:55Psa 106:36Deu 7:16Exo 23:33Exo 34:12Jdg 2:21Jdg 3:6
When the angel of the LORD had spoken these words to all the Israelites, the people lifted up their voices and wept. 2Co 7:10Jas 4:91Sa 7:6Ezr 10:1Jer 31:9Luk 6:21Luk 7:38Pro 17:10 So they called that place Bochim 2and offered sacrifices there to the LORD. 1Sa 7:9Gen 35:8Jdg 13:19Jdg 6:24Jos 7:26
Joshua’s Death and Burial
(Joshua 24:29–33)
After Joshua had dismissed the people, the Israelites went out to take possession of the land, each to his own inheritance. Jos 24:28-31Jos 22:6 And the people served the LORD throughout the days of Joshua and of the elders who outlived him, who had seen all the great works that the LORD had done for Israel. Php 2:122Ki 12:2Jos 24:312Ch 24:14-222Ch 24:2
And Joshua son of Nun, the servant of the LORD, died at the age of 110. Jos 24:29-30 They buried him in the land of his inheritance, at Timnath-heres 3in the hill country of Ephraim, north of Mount Gaash. Jos 19:50Jos 24:30
Israel’s Unfaithfulness
(Isaiah 43:22–28; Jeremiah 2:23–37)
After that whole generation had also been gathered to their fathers, another generation rose up who did not know the LORD or the works that He had done for Israel. 1Sa 2:12Tit 1:16Exo 5:21Ch 28:9Act 13:36Jer 31:342Sa 7:12Deu 31:16 And the Israelites did evil in the sight of the LORD and served the Baals. Jdg 10:6Jdg 3:7Jdg 4:1Jdg 6:11Ki 18:18Jdg 8:33Jdg 13:11Sa 7:4
Thus they forsook the LORD, the God of their fathers, who had brought them out of the land of Egypt, and they followed after various gods of the peoples around them. They bowed down to them and provoked the LORD to anger, Exo 20:5Deu 13:5Deu 29:25Deu 6:14-15Deu 29:18Deu 5:9Deu 31:16-17Deu 32:15 for they forsook Him and served Baal and the Ashtoreths. Then the anger of the LORD burned against Israel, and He delivered them into the hands of those who plundered them. 4 He sold them into the hands of their enemies all around, whom they were no longer able to resist. 2Ki 17:20Psa 106:40-42Deu 32:30Deu 31:17-182Ch 36:16Jdg 10:7Jdg 3:7-8Jdg 4:2 Wherever Israel marched out, the hand of the LORD was against them to bring calamity, just as He had sworn to them. So they were greatly distressed. Deu 28:15-68Jos 23:15-16Lev 26:14-461Sa 13:61Sa 14:241Sa 30:62Co 4:8Deu 32:40-41
Judges Raised Up
Then the LORD raised up judges, 5 who saved them from the hands of those who plundered them. Act 13:201Sa 12:11Psa 106:43-45Jdg 3:15Neh 9:27Jdg 3:9-10Jdg 4:5Jdg 6:14
Israel, however, did not listen to their judges. Instead, they prostituted themselves with other gods and bowed down to them. They quickly turned from the way of their fathers, who had walked in obedience to the LORD’s commandments; they did not do as their fathers had done. Deu 9:12Gal 1:6Jdg 2:7Hos 2:2Rev 17:1-51Sa 12:121Sa 12:171Sa 12:19
Whenever the LORD raised up a judge for the Israelites, He was with that judge and saved them from the hands of their enemies while the judge was still alive; for the LORD was moved to pity by their groaning under those who oppressed them and afflicted them. Deu 32:36Jos 1:5Exo 2:242Ki 13:22-23Hos 11:8Psa 106:44-452Ki 13:4Gen 6:6 But when the judge died, the Israelites became even more corrupt than their fathers, going after other gods to serve them and bow down to them. They would not give up their evil practices and stubborn ways. Jdg 8:33Jdg 4:12Ch 24:17-18Jdg 3:11-12Mat 23:32Jer 23:171Sa 15:23Jdg 2:7
So the anger of the LORD burned against Israel, and He said, “Because this nation has transgressed the covenant I laid down for their fathers and has not heeded My voice, Jdg 2:14Jos 23:16Deu 29:10-13Deu 32:22Exo 24:3-8Exo 32:10-11Ezk 20:37Jdg 10:7 I will no longer drive out before them any of the nations Joshua left when he died. Jos 23:13Ezk 20:24Jdg 2:3Jdg 3:3 In this way I will test whether Israel will keep the way of the LORD by walking in it as their fathers did.” Deu 8:2Deu 8:16Deu 13:3Pro 17:3Gen 22:12Ch 32:31Jdg 3:1-4Job 23:10
That is why the LORD had left those nations in place and had not driven them out immediately by delivering them into the hand of Joshua.
