The Mission of John the Baptist
(Isaiah 40:1–5; Matthew 3:1–12; Mark 1:1–8; John 1:19–28)
In the fifteenth year of the reign of Tiberius Caesar, while Pontius Pilate was governor of Judea, Herod tetrarch of Galilee, his brother Philip tetrarch of Ituraea and Trachonitis, and Lysanias tetrarch of Abilene, Gen 49:10Luk 23:6-11Act 4:27Luk 2:1Luk 23:24Luk 9:7Mat 27:2Mrk 6:17 during the high priesthood of Annas and Caiaphas, the word of God came to John son of Zechariah in the wilderness. Act 4:6Jon 1:1Jhn 18:24Luk 1:80Jhn 18:13-14Mat 26:3Mat 3:1-10Mic 1:1
He went into all the region around the Jordan, preaching a baptism of repentance for the forgiveness of sins, Luk 1:77Act 13:24Mat 3:5-6Act 19:4Mat 3:11Act 22:16Jhn 1:31-33Jhn 3:26 as it is written in the book of the words of Isaiah the prophet: Isa 40:3-5Jhn 1:23Jhn 1:26-36Luk 1:76-79Isa 62:10Jhn 1:7Jhn 3:28-36Isa 57:14
“A voice of one calling in the wilderness,
‘Prepare the way for the Lord,
make straight paths for Him.
Every valley shall be filled in, Isa 40:4Isa 42:16Isa 45:2Isa 49:11Ezk 17:24Heb 12:12-13Luk 1:51-53Isa 2:11-17
and every mountain and hill made low.
The crooked ways shall be made straight,
and the rough ways smooth.
And all humanity will see God’s salvation.’” 1 Isa 52:10Isa 40:5Psa 98:2-3Isa 49:6Rom 10:18Luk 2:10-11Luk 2:30-32Rom 10:12
Then John said to the crowds coming out to be baptized by him, “You brood of vipers, who warned you to flee from the coming wrath? Mat 23:331Th 1:10Mat 12:341Jn 3:8Heb 6:18Act 13:10Gen 3:15Isa 59:5 Produce fruit, then, in keeping with repentance. And do not begin to say to yourselves, ‘We have Abraham as our father.’ For I tell you that out of these stones God can raise up children for Abraham. John replied, “Whoever has two tunics should share with him who has none, and whoever has food should do the same.” Isa 58:7-111Jn 3:171Ti 6:18Luk 18:221Jn 4:20Jas 1:27Jas 2:15-26Dan 4:27
Even tax collectors came to be baptized. “Teacher,” they asked, “what should we do?” Luk 7:29Luk 15:1-2Luk 18:13Mat 21:31-32
“Collect no more than you are authorized,” he answered. Luk 19:8Eph 4:281Co 6:10Isa 1:16-17Mic 6:8Tit 2:11-12Mat 7:12Isa 55:6-7

“Do not take money by force or false accusation,” he said. “Be content with your wages.”
The people were waiting expectantly and were all wondering in their hearts if John could be the Christ. Jhn 10:24Jhn 3:28-29Jhn 1:19-28 John answered all of them: “I baptize you with water, 2 but One more powerful than I will come, the straps of whose sandals I am not worthy to untie. 3 He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and with fire. 4 Mat 3:11Act 1:5Act 11:15-16Jhn 1:33Jhn 1:26Act 19:4-5Jol 2:28-29Act 2:3-4 His winnowing fork is in His hand to clear His threshing floor and to gather the wheat into His barn; but He will burn up the chaff with unquenchable fire.” Jer 15:7Mat 13:30Mic 4:12Psa 1:4Isa 30:24Mat 3:12Psa 21:9-10Mrk 9:43-49
