The Priests and Levites Who Returned

Seraiah, Jeremiah, Ezra,

Amariah, Malluch, ¹ Hattush,

Shecaniah, Rehum, ² Meremoth,

Iddo, Ginnethon, ³ Abijah, Luk 1:5

Mijamin, ⁴ Maadiah, ⁵ Bilgah, ⁶

Shemaiah, Joiarib, Jedaiah, 1Ch 9:10 Neh 11:10

Sallu, Amok, Hilkiah, and Jedaiah. 1Ch 24:18 Ezr 3:2 Hag 1:1 Neh 12:1 Zec 3:1

These were the leaders of the priests and their associates in the days of Jeshua.

The Levites were Jeshua, Binnui, Kadmiel, Sherebiah, Judah, and Mattaniah, who, with his associates, led the songs of thanksgiving. Neh 11:17 Neh 12:24 1Ch 9:33 Neh 10:9-13 Neh 11:22 Neh 7:48 Neh 9:4 Bakbukiah and Unni, their associates, stood across from them in the services. Neh 12:24 Psa 134:1-3

Jeshua was the father of Joiakim, 1Ch 6:3-15 Neh 12:26 Neh 13:28 Neh 13:4 Neh 13:7 Neh 3:1

Joiakim was the father of Eliashib,

Eliashib was the father of Joiada,

Joiada was the father of Jonathan, ⁷

and Jonathan was the father of Jaddua.

of the family of Seraiah, Meraiah;

of Jeremiah, Hananiah;

of Ezra, Meshullam;

of Amariah, Jehohanan;

of Malluchi, ⁸ Jonathan;

of Harim, Adna;

of Meraioth, ¹⁰ Helkai;

of Iddo, Zechariah;

of Ginnethon, Meshullam;

of Abijah, Zichri;

of Miniamin and of Moadiah, ¹¹ Piltai;

of Bilgah, Shammua;

of Shemaiah, Jonathan;

of Joiarib, Mattenai;

of Jedaiah, Uzzi;

of Sallai, ¹² Kallai;

of Amok, Eber;

of Hilkiah, Hashabiah;

and of Jedaiah, Nethanel.

In the days of Eliashib, Joiada, Johanan, ¹³ and Jaddua, during the reign of Darius the Persian, the heads of the families of the Levites and priests were recorded. Neh 12:10-13

As for the descendants of Levi, the family heads up to the days of Johanan son of Eliashib were recorded in the Book of the Chronicles. ¹⁴ 1Ch 9:14-44 The leaders of the Levites were Hashabiah, Sherebiah, and Jeshua son of Kadmiel, ¹⁵ along with their associates, who stood across from them to give praise and thanksgiving as one section alternated with the other, as prescribed by David the man of God. 1Ch 25:1-26 1Ch 23:1-32 1Ki 17:24 2Ch 8:14 Deu 33:1 Ezr 2:40 Ezr 3:10-11 Jos 14:6

Mattaniah, Bakbukiah, Obadiah, Meshullam, Talmon, and Akkub were gatekeepers who guarded the storerooms at the gates. 1Ch 23:32 1Ch 26:12 1Ch 26:15 1Ch 9:14-17 Isa 21:8 Neh 11:17-19 Neh 12:8-9 They served in the days of Joiakim son of Jeshua, the son of Jozadak, ¹⁶ and in the days of Nehemiah the governor and Ezra the priest and scribe. The Dedication of the Wall

At the dedication of the wall of Jerusalem, the Levites were sought out from all their homes and brought to Jerusalem to celebrate the joyous dedication with thanksgiving and singing, accompanied by cymbals, harps, and lyres. 1Ch 15:16 1Ch 15:28 2Ch 29:30 2Ch 5:13 Deu 20:5 1Ch 15:12 1Ch 15:4 1Ch 13:8 The singers were also assembled from the region around Jerusalem, from the villages of the Netophathites, 1Ch 9:16 1Ch 2:54 Neh 6:2 from Beth-gilgal, and from the fields of Geba and Azmaveth, for they had built villages for themselves around Jerusalem. 1Ch 6:60 Deu 11:30 Ezr 2:24 Jos 10:43 Jos 21:17 Jos 5:9 Neh 11:31 After the priests and Levites had purified themselves, they purified the people, the gates, and the wall. 2Ch 29:5 Exo 19:10 Ezr 6:21 Job 1:5 2Ch 29:34 Exo 19:15 Gen 35:2 Heb 5:1

Then I brought the leaders of Judah up on the wall, and I appointed two great thanksgiving choirs. One was to proceed along the top of the wall ¹⁷to the right, toward the Dung Gate. Neh 2:13 Neh 12:38 1Ch 13:1 1Ch 28:1 2Ch 5:2 Neh 12:40 Neh 3:13-14 Hoshaiah and half the leaders of Judah followed, along with Azariah, Ezra, Meshullam, Neh 10:2-7 Judah, Benjamin, Shemaiah, Jeremiah, and some of the priests with trumpets, and also Zechariah son of Jonathan, the son of Shemaiah, the son of Mattaniah, the son of Micaiah, ¹⁸ the son of Zaccur, the son of Asaph, Jos 6:4 Num 10:2-10 1Ch 25:2 1Ch 26:10-11 1Ch 6:39-43 2Ch 13:12 2Ch 5:12 Neh 11:17 and his associates—Shemaiah, Azarel, Milalai, Gilalai, Maai, Nethanel, Judah, and Hanani—with the musical instruments prescribed by David the man of God. Ezra the scribe led the procession. The second thanksgiving choir proceeded to the left, and I followed it with half the people along the top of the wall, past the Tower of the Ovens to the Broad Wall, Neh 3:8 Neh 3:11 Neh 12:31 over the Gate of Ephraim, the Jeshanah Gate, ¹⁹ the Fish Gate, the Tower of Hananel, and the Tower of the Hundred, as far as the Sheep Gate. The two thanksgiving choirs then stood in the house of God, as did I, along with the half of the officials accompanying me, Psa 42:4 Neh 12:31-32 Psa 134:1-3 Psa 47:6-9 as well as the priests with their trumpets—Eliakim, Maaseiah, Miniamin, Micaiah, Elioenai, Zechariah, and Hananiah— and also Maaseiah, Shemaiah, Eleazar, Uzzi, Jehohanan, Malchijah, Elam, and Ezer. Provisions for Temple Worship

And on that same day men were appointed over the rooms that housed the supplies, contributions, firstfruits, and tithes. The portions specified by the Law for the priests and Levites were gathered into these storerooms from the fields of the villages, because Judah rejoiced over the priests and Levites who were serving. They performed the service of their God and the service of purification, along with the singers and gatekeepers, as David and his son Solomon had prescribed. 1Ch 25:1-26 1Ch 23:28 2Ch 23:6 For long ago, in the days of David and Asaph, there were directors for the singers and for the songs of praise and thanksgiving to God. 2Ch 29:30 1Ch 25:1-31 Psa 73:1 Psa 83:1

So in the days of Zerubbabel and Nehemiah, all Israel contributed the daily portions for the singers and gatekeepers. They also set aside daily portions for the Levites, and the Levites set aside daily portions for the descendants of Aaron. 2Ch 31:5-6 Gal 6:6 Mal 3:8-10 Neh 10:35-39 Neh 11:23 Neh 12:1 Neh 12:12 Neh 12:26
