The Dedication of the Wall

At the dedication of the wall of Jerusalem, the Levites were sought out from all their homes and brought to Jerusalem to celebrate the joyous dedication with thanksgiving and singing, accompanied by cymbals, harps, and lyres. 1Ch 15:161Ch 15:282Ch 29:302Ch 5:13Deu 20:51Ch 15:121Ch 15:41Ch 13:8 The singers were also assembled from the region around Jerusalem, from the villages of the Netophathites, 1Ch 9:161Ch 2:54Neh 6:2 from Beth-gilgal, and from the fields of Geba and Azmaveth, for they had built villages for themselves around Jerusalem. 1Ch 6:60Deu 11:30Ezr 2:24Jos 10:43Jos 21:17Jos 5:9Neh 11:31 After the priests and Levites had purified themselves, they purified the people, the gates, and the wall. 2Ch 29:5Exo 19:10Ezr 6:21Job 1:52Ch 29:34Exo 19:15Gen 35:2Heb 5:1

Then I brought the leaders of Judah up on the wall, and I appointed two great thanksgiving choirs. One was to proceed along the top of the wall 17to the right, toward the Dung Gate. Neh 2:13Neh 12:381Ch 13:11Ch 28:12Ch 5:2Neh 12:40Neh 3:13-14 Hoshaiah and half the leaders of Judah followed, along with Azariah, Ezra, Meshullam, Neh 10:2-7 Judah, Benjamin, Shemaiah, Jeremiah, and some of the priests with trumpets, and also Zechariah son of Jonathan, the son of Shemaiah, the son of Mattaniah, the son of Micaiah, 18 the son of Zaccur, the son of Asaph, Jos 6:4Num 10:2-101Ch 25:21Ch 26:10-111Ch 6:39-432Ch 13:122Ch 5:12Neh 11:17 and his associates—Shemaiah, Azarel, Milalai, Gilalai, Maai, Nethanel, Judah, and Hanani—with the musical instruments prescribed by David the man of God. Ezra the scribe led the procession. Neh 12:241Ch 23:52Ch 8:14Amo 6:5Ezr 7:1Ezr 8:1 At the Fountain Gate they climbed the steps of the City of David on the ascent to the wall and passed above the house of David to the Water Gate on the east. The second thanksgiving choir proceeded to the left, and I followed it with half the people along the top of the wall, past the Tower of the Ovens to the Broad Wall, Neh 3:8Neh 3:11Neh 12:31 over the Gate of Ephraim, the Jeshanah Gate, 19 the Fish Gate, the Tower of Hananel, and the Tower of the Hundred, as far as the Sheep Gate. And they stopped at the Gate of the Guard. Neh 3:1Neh 3:3Neh 3:6Neh 8:16Neh 3:252Ki 14:13Jer 31:38Jer 32:2

The two thanksgiving choirs then stood in the house of God, as did I, along with the half of the officials accompanying me, Psa 42:4Neh 12:31-32Psa 134:1-3Psa 47:6-9 as well as the priests with their trumpets—Eliakim, Maaseiah, Miniamin, Micaiah, Elioenai, Zechariah, and Hananiah— and also Maaseiah, Shemaiah, Eleazar, Uzzi, Jehohanan, Malchijah, Elam, and Ezer. Then the choirs sang out under the direction of Jezrahiah. Psa 81:1Isa 12:5-6Neh 11:14Psa 100:1-2Psa 95:1Psa 98:4-9

On that day they offered great sacrifices, rejoicing because God had given them great joy. The women and children also rejoiced, so that the joy of Jerusalem was heard from afar. Ezr 3:13Psa 92:4Jer 31:13Psa 148:11-131Ch 29:21-221Sa 4:52Ch 20:132Ch 20:27

Provisions for Temple Worship

And on that same day men were appointed over the rooms that housed the supplies, contributions, firstfruits, and tithes. The portions specified by the Law for the priests and Levites were gathered into these storerooms from the fields of the villages, because Judah rejoiced over the priests and Levites who were serving. Neh 10:37-39Neh 13:12-132Ch 31:11-131Ch 23:281Ch 26:21-261Ch 9:262Ch 13:11-122Ch 5:11-12

They performed the service of their God and the service of purification, along with the singers and gatekeepers, as David and his son Solomon had prescribed. 1Ch 25:1-261Ch 23:282Ch 23:6 For long ago, in the days of David and Asaph, there were directors for the singers and for the songs of praise and thanksgiving to God. 2Ch 29:301Ch 25:1-31Psa 73:1Psa 83:1

So in the days of Zerubbabel and Nehemiah, all Israel contributed the daily portions for the singers and gatekeepers. They also set aside daily portions for the Levites, and the Levites set aside daily portions for the descendants of Aaron. 2Ch 31:5-6Gal 6:6Mal 3:8-10Neh 10:35-39Neh 11:23Neh 12:1Neh 12:12Neh 12:26
