Babylon Is Fallen

(Isaiah 21:1–10)

After this I saw another angel descending from heaven with great authority, and the earth was illuminated by his glory. “Fallen, fallen is Babylon the great! ¹

She has become a lair for demons

and a haunt for every unclean spirit,

every unclean bird,

and every detestable beast. ²

of the passion of her immorality.

The kings of the earth were immoral with her,

and the merchants of the earth have grown wealthy

from the extravagance of her luxury.”

“Come out of her, My people, ⁴

so that you will not share in her sins

or contract any of her plagues.

and God has remembered her iniquities.

Give back to her as she has done to others; Jer 50:29 Psa 137:8 Jer 50:15 Jer 51:24 Rev 14:10 Rev 16:19 Jer 16:18 Jer 17:18

pay her back double for what she has done;

mix her a double portion in her own cup.

As much as she has glorified herself and lived in luxury, Isa 47:7-9 Zep 2:15 Ezk 28:2-10 Lam 1:1 2Th 2:4-8 Jer 13:18 Isa 22:12-14 Isa 47:1-2

give her the same measure of torment and grief.

In her heart she says, ‘I sit as queen;

I am not a widow and will never see grief.’

death and grief and famine—

and she will be consumed by fire,

for mighty is the Lord God who judges her.”

Lament over Babylon

Then the kings of the earth who committed sexual immorality and lived in luxury with her will weep and wail at the sight of the smoke rising from the fire that consumes her. ⁵ Rev 18:3 Rev 19:3 Rev 17:2 Rev 18:18 Ezk 26:16-17 Rev 14:11 Rev 18:20 Gen 19:28 In fear of her torment, they will stand at a distance and cry out: Rev 18:19 Rev 18:8 Rev 18:15-17 Rev 14:8 Amo 5:16 Jol 1:15 Jer 30:7 Jer 51:8-9

“Woe, woe to the great city,

the mighty city of Babylon!

For in a single hour

your judgment has come.”

“The fruit of your soul’s desire

has departed from you;

all your luxury and splendor have vanished,

never to be seen again.”

The merchants who sold these things and grew their wealth from her will stand at a distance, in fear of her torment. They will weep and mourn, Rev 18:3 Act 19:24-27 Ezk 27:31 Rev 18:10-11 Act 16:19 Amo 5:16-17 Hos 12:7-8 Mrk 11:17 saying: Rev 17:4 Luk 16:19-31 Rev 18:10-11 Rev 18:19

“Woe, woe to the great city,

clothed in fine linen and purple and scarlet,

adorned with gold and precious stones and pearls!

such fabulous wealth has been destroyed!”

Every shipmaster, passenger, and sailor, and all who make their living from the sea, will stand at a distance and cry out at the sight of the smoke rising from the fire that consumes her. “What city was ever like this great city?” they will exclaim. Rev 13:4 Rev 18:9-10 Ezk 27:30-32 Isa 23:8-9 Jer 51:37

Then they will throw dust on their heads as they weep and mourn and cry out: Rev 18:10 Jos 7:6 Ezk 27:30 Job 2:12 Rev 18:3 1Sa 4:12 Rev 18:8 2Sa 13:19

“Woe, woe to the great city,

where all who had ships on the sea

were enriched by her wealth!

For in a single hour

she has been destroyed.”

O saints and apostles and prophets,

because God has pronounced for you

His judgment against her.

The Doom of Babylon

Then a mighty angel picked up a stone the size of a great millstone and cast it into the sea, saying: Jer 51:63-64 Ezk 26:21 Rev 5:2 Dan 11:19 Job 20:8 Rev 12:8 Rev 16:20 Rev 18:22

“With such violence

the great city of Babylon will be cast down,

never to be seen again.

of flute players and trumpeters,

will never ring out in you again.

Nor will any craftsmen of any trade

be found in you again,

nor the sound of a millstone

be heard in you again.

will never shine in you again,

and the voices of a bride and bridegroom

will never call out in you again.

For your merchants were the great ones of the earth,

because all the nations were deceived by your sorcery.”
