A Call to Repentance

(Joel 1:13–20; Amos 5:4–15; Luke 13:1–5)

O shameful nation,

before the decree takes effect 1 Nam 1:6Hos 13:3Isa 17:13Lam 4:11Psa 1:42Ki 22:16-17Job 21:18Zep 1:18

and the day passes like chaff,

before the burning anger of the LORD comes upon you,

before the Day of the LORD’s anger comes upon you.

Seek the LORD, all you humble of the earth Amo 5:14-15Isa 26:20-21Jer 29:12-13Psa 76:9Jon 3:9Psa 22:26Isa 55:6-7Psa 105:4

who carry out His justice.

Seek righteousness; seek humility.

Perhaps you will be sheltered

on the day of the LORD’s anger.

Judgment on the Philistines

(Jeremiah 47:1–7)

For Gaza will be abandoned, Zec 9:5-7Amo 1:6-8Jer 47:1-7Jer 25:20Ezk 25:15-17Jer 15:8Jer 6:4Psa 91:6

O nation of the Cherethites!

The word of the LORD is against you,

O Canaan, land of the Philistines:

“I will destroy you,

and no one will be left.”

So the seacoast will become a land of pastures, Ezk 25:5Isa 17:2Isa 5:17Zep 2:14-15

with wells 2for shepherds and folds for sheep.

The coast will belong to the remnant of the house of Judah; Exo 4:31Zep 3:20Ezk 39:25Luk 1:68Mic 5:3-8Amo 9:14-15Jer 29:14Jer 33:7

among the houses of Ashkelon,

for the LORD their God will attend to them

and restore their captives. 3

and the insults of the Ammonites,

Therefore, as surely as I live,” Isa 15:1-9Isa 11:14Deu 29:23Isa 25:10Isa 49:18Jer 48:1Amo 1:13Ezk 25:1-17

the God of Israel,

“surely Moab will be like Sodom

and the Ammonites like Gomorrah—

a place of weeds and salt pits,

a perpetual wasteland.

The remnant of My people will plunder them;

the remainder of My nation will dispossess them.”

This they shall have in return for their pride, Isa 16:6Jer 48:29Zep 2:81Pe 5:5Dan 4:37Dan 5:20-23Exo 10:3Exo 9:17

each in its own place.

Judgment on Cush and Assyria

“You too, O Cushites, 4 Ezk 30:4-9Isa 13:5Isa 18:1-7Isa 20:4-5Isa 43:3Jer 46:9-10Jer 51:20-23Isa 10:5

creatures of every kind. 5

Both the desert owl and screech owl 6

will roost atop her pillars.

Their calls will sound from the window,

but desolation will lie on the threshold,

for He will expose the beams of cedar.

This carefree city Ezk 28:2Ezk 28:9Isa 22:2Isa 47:7-8Nam 3:191Ki 9:7-8Jer 19:8Lam 1:1

that dwells securely,

that thinks to herself:

“I am it, and there is none besides me,”

what a ruin she has become,

a resting place for beasts.

Everyone who passes by her

hisses and shakes his fist.
