Armor and Weapons

Palestine was small, but its location made it important in ancient times. It stood between Africa, Asia, and Europe. Powerful nations surrounded it, including Egypt, Mesopotamia, and the Hittite kingdom in Anatolia.

These nations often tried to control Palestine. As a result, warfare in the region changed over time.

When one army developed a new weapon, defense, or battle method, other armies developed ways to answer it. Each new military method led to a new response.

There are three main parts of warfare:

movement,

weapons, and

protection.

Weapons alone rarely decided the result of a battle, especially when both armies had similar strength. Victory often depended on how well commanders planned and used their battle methods. Strong leadership and skilled soldiers were also important in many battles described in the Bible.

Attack Weapons

A military commander's armory in ancient times included many offensive weapons for different ranges.

Long-range weapons were used to attack enemies from far away. They included:

Bow: A weapon that shoots arrows. It has a curved frame joined by a tight string.

Sling: A small weapon used to throw stones at high speed. It was made from a strip of leather or cloth.

Medium-range weapons were used against enemies who were closer but still beyond hand-to-hand fighting. They included:

Javelin: A light, short spear designed to be thrown by hand.

Spear: A long weapon with a sharp point. A soldier could thrust it at an enemy or sometimes throw it.

Short-range weapons were used in close combat, when enemies fought near each other. They included:

Battle-Ax: A heavy weapon with a sharp metal blade attached to a handle. Soldiers used it for striking.

Mace: A heavy club with a stone or metal head. Soldiers used it to crush armor or injure an enemy.

Sword: A weapon with a long metal blade and a handle. Soldiers used it for cutting, striking, or stabbing.

Defensive Protection

Defensive protection is equipment or actions used to protect a person from attack or injury. Without this protection, soldiers could be injured more easily. This could reduce an army’s ability to move and fight.

In ancient warfare, defensive protection included:

Body Armor: Protective clothing that covers a soldier’s body during battle.

Helmet: A hard covering worn on the head for protection in battle.

Shield: A strong object that a soldier or shield bearer holds to protect the body from an enemy’s weapons.
