Bozrah

A well-fortified city in northern Edom (Genesis 36:33; 1 Chronicles 1:44). Cliffs protected the city on three sides, so people thought it could not be conquered. Bozrah was about 48.3 kilometers (30 miles) north of Petra, at the site of modern Buseirah. It controlled travel along the King’s Highway.

The prophets mentions Bozrah as well. It appears as one of the strongholds that would become a ruin when God judged Edom (Isaiah 34:6; 63:1; Jeremiah 49:13; Amos 1:12).

One of the cities mentioned by the prophet Jeremiah. He prophesied that it would collapse with the Moabite nation (Jeremiah 48:24). Bozrah is probably a variant spelling of Bezer. See Bezer (Place).

A city also called Bosorah. Judas Maccabeus captured it during his Gilead campaign (1 Maccabees 5:26, 28). It could be the same place as Bozrah #2.
