Cendebeus

Cendebeus was the commander-in-chief of the seacoast of Syria-Palestine about 138 BC under Antiochus VII (1 Maccabees 15:38). Cendebeus was ordered to build a fortress at Kedron (which may be the Gederah from Joshua 15:36). After that, he moved his base to Jamnia and raided Judea (1 Maccabees 15:39–40).

Simon Maccabeus was too old to fight, so he sent his sons, Judas and John Hyrcanus, against Cendebeus. He gave them 20,000 soldiers and horsemen. Judas was wounded, but the Jews prevailed after slaying about 2,000 men. Cendebeus was pursued back to Kedron, and the Jews returned to Judea (1 Maccabees 16:1–10).
