Field of Blood

The Field of Blood is the name given to the field bought with the money Judas received for betraying Jesus (Matthew 27:8; Acts 1:19). The chief priests used this money to buy the field as a burial place for foreigners. Before this, it was known as the Potter's Field.

According to Matthew, Judas hanged himself. Acts says that he fell there and his body burst open. The field became known by the Aramaic name Akeldama (spelled "Aceldama" in the King James Version), which translates "field of blood."

Traditionally, Akeldama is identified with a site on the southern slope of the Valley of Hinnom, near the Kidron Valley.
