Now a certain man was sick, Lazarus from Bethany, of the village of Mary and her sister, Martha. Jhn 12:17Luk 10:38-422Ki 20:1-12Jhn 11:11Jhn 12:9Mat 21:17Act 9:37Jhn 11:5-6 It was that Mary who had anointed the Lord with ointment and wiped his feet with her hair, whose brother Lazarus was sick. Jhn 12:3Mat 26:6-7Mrk 14:3Luk 7:37-38 The sisters therefore sent to him, saying, “Lord, behold, he for whom you have great affection is sick.” Jhn 11:5Rev 3:19Heb 12:6-7Jhn 13:23Psa 16:32Ti 4:20Gen 22:2Jhn 11:11

But when Jesus heard it, he said, “This sickness is not to death, but for the glory of God, that God’s Son may be glorified by it.” Jhn 11:40Jhn 9:31Pe 4:14Jhn 5:23Jhn 17:51Pe 4:11Jhn 13:31-32Mrk 5:39-42 Now Jesus loved Martha, and her sister, and Lazarus. Jhn 15:9-13Jhn 11:36Jhn 17:26Jhn 16:27Jhn 11:8 When therefore he heard that he was sick, he stayed two days in the place where he was. Isa 30:18Isa 55:8-9Gen 22:14Gen 42:24Gen 43:29-31Gen 44:1-5Gen 45:1-5Mat 15:22-28 Then after this he said to the disciples, “Let’s go into Judea again.” Act 20:22-24Act 15:36Jhn 10:40-42Luk 9:51

The disciples asked him, “Rabbi, the Jews were just trying to stone you. Are you going there again?” Jhn 10:31Jhn 8:59Act 21:12-13Mat 16:21-23Jhn 10:39Act 20:24Psa 11:1-3Mat 23:7

Jesus answered, “Aren’t there twelve hours of daylight? If a man walks in the day, he doesn’t stumble, because he sees the light of this world. Jhn 9:4Jhn 12:35Jer 31:9Luk 13:31-33Pro 3:23 But if a man walks in the night, he stumbles, because the light isn’t in him.” Pro 4:18-191Jn 2:10-11Jer 13:16Jer 20:11Ecc 2:14Psa 27:2 He said these things, and after that, he said to them, “Our friend Lazarus has fallen asleep, but I am going so that I may awake him out of sleep.” Dan 12:2Jhn 11:131Th 5:10Jhn 11:43-44Mat 27:521Co 15:51Eph 5:14Exo 33:11

The disciples therefore said, “Lord, if he has fallen asleep, he will recover.”

Now Jesus had spoken of his death, but they thought that he spoke of taking rest in sleep. Mat 9:24 So Jesus said to them plainly then, “Lazarus is dead. Jhn 16:25Jhn 10:24Jhn 16:29 I am glad for your sakes that I was not there, so that you may believe. Nevertheless, let’s go to him.” 2Ti 2:10Jhn 14:10-111Jn 5:13Isa 54:15Jhn 11:35-36Jhn 11:42Co 4:15Isa 65:8

Thomas therefore, who is called Didymus, 1 said to his fellow disciples, “Let’s also go, that we may die with him.” Jhn 13:37Luk 6:15Mat 10:3Mat 26:35Mrk 3:18Jhn 14:5Jhn 20:24-29Jhn 21:2

So when Jesus came, he found that he had been in the tomb four days already. Jhn 11:39Hos 6:2Act 2:27-31Jhn 2:19 Now Bethany was near Jerusalem, about fifteen stadia 2 away. Jhn 11:1Luk 24:13Rev 14:20Jhn 6:19Rev 21:16 Many of the Jews had joined the women around Martha and Mary, to console them concerning their brother. Job 2:111Th 5:11Jhn 11:312Co 1:41Th 4:18Job 42:11Rom 12:152Sa 10:2 Then when Martha heard that Jesus was coming, she went and met him, but Mary stayed in the house. 1Th 4:17Luk 10:38-42Jhn 11:30Mat 25:1Act 10:25Act 28:15Mat 25:6 Therefore Martha said to Jesus, “Lord, if you would have been here, my brother wouldn’t have died. Jhn 11:32Mat 9:181Ki 17:18Jhn 11:37Jhn 4:47-49Luk 7:6-10Luk 8:49-55Psa 78:19 Even now I know that whatever you ask of God, God will give you.” Jhn 9:31Jhn 11:41-42Mrk 9:23Mat 28:18Heb 11:17-19Jhn 5:22-27Jhn 17:2Jhn 3:35

Jesus said to her, “Your brother will rise again.” Jhn 11:43-44

Martha said to him, “I know that he will rise again in the resurrection at the last day.” Dan 12:2-3Act 24:15Jhn 5:28-29Isa 26:19Act 17:31-32Hos 13:14Luk 14:14Psa 17:15

Jesus said to her, “I am the resurrection and the life. He who believes in me will still live, even if he dies. 1Th 4:14Jhn 3:361Jn 5:11-12Jhn 1:4Rom 8:10-11Jhn 5:21Isa 26:19Rom 8:2 Whoever lives and believes in me will never die. Do you believe this?” Jhn 10:28Jhn 5:24Rom 8:131Jn 5:10-12Jhn 8:51-53Jhn 6:54-58Jhn 3:15-18Jhn 6:50-51

She said to him, “Yes, Lord. I have come to believe that you are the Christ, God’s Son, he who comes into the world.” Mat 16:16Jhn 6:14Jhn 6:69Mal 3:11Jn 5:11Jn 5:201Ti 1:15-16Luk 2:11

When she had said this, she went away and called Mary, her sister, secretly, saying, “The Teacher is here and is calling you.” Jhn 13:131Th 4:17-18Jhn 11:20Jhn 20:16Mrk 10:49Jhn 1:41Jhn 1:45Jhn 10:3

When she heard this, she arose quickly and went to him. Psa 27:8Pro 15:23Psa 119:59-60Sng 3:1-4Pro 27:17 Now Jesus had not yet come into the village, but was in the place where Martha met him. Jhn 11:20 Then the Jews who were with her in the house and were consoling her, when they saw Mary, that she rose up quickly and went out, followed her, saying, “She is going to the tomb to weep there.” Jhn 11:192Sa 12:16-18Gen 37:351Co 2:15

Therefore when Mary came to where Jesus was and saw him, she fell down at his feet, saying to him, “Lord, if you would have been here, my brother wouldn’t have died.” Jhn 11:21Luk 17:16Luk 5:8Luk 8:41Rev 22:8Rev 5:14Rev 5:8Jhn 11:37

When Jesus therefore saw her weeping, and the Jews weeping who came with her, he groaned in the spirit and was troubled, Jhn 11:38Jhn 12:27Mrk 3:5Rom 12:15Gen 43:30-31Gen 45:1-5Heb 5:7-8Mrk 14:33-35 and said, “Where have you laid him?” Mat 28:6Jhn 20:2Mrk 15:47Mrk 16:6Jhn 1:39

They told him, “Lord, come and see.”

Jesus wept. Luk 19:41Heb 4:15Jhn 11:33Isa 53:3Jer 13:17Psa 119:136Job 30:25Heb 2:16-17

The Jews therefore said, “See how much affection he had for him!” Jhn 11:31Jn 3:11Jn 4:9-10Rev 1:5Eph 5:22Co 8:8-9Eph 5:25Jhn 14:21-23 Some of them said, “Couldn’t this man, who opened the eyes of him who was blind, have also kept this man from dying?” Jhn 9:6-7Jhn 11:32Luk 23:35Luk 23:39Mat 27:40-42Psa 78:19-20Jhn 11:21Mrk 15:32

Jesus therefore, again groaning in himself, came to the tomb. Now it was a cave, and a stone lay against it. Jhn 11:33Luk 24:2Mat 27:60Gen 23:19Isa 22:16Jhn 20:1Mrk 15:46Mrk 8:12 Jesus said, “Take away the stone.” Jhn 11:17Psa 49:7Mrk 16:3Gen 3:19Php 3:21Gen 23:4Act 13:36Act 2:27

Martha, the sister of him who was dead, said to him, “Lord, by this time there is a stench, for he has been dead four days.”

Jesus said to her, “Didn’t I tell you that if you believed, you would see God’s glory?” Jhn 11:4Jhn 11:23-26Rom 4:17-25Psa 63:2Jhn 1:142Co 3:18Psa 90:162Ch 20:20

So they took away the stone from the place where the dead man was lying. 3 Jesus lifted up his eyes and said, “Father, I thank you that you listened to me. Mat 11:25Jhn 17:1Psa 123:1Luk 10:21Php 4:6Jhn 12:28-30Luk 18:13 I know that you always listen to me, but because of the multitude standing around I said this, that they may believe that you sent me.” Jhn 3:17Jhn 17:211Jn 4:14Heb 7:251Jn 4:9-10Heb 5:7Jhn 11:22Jhn 17:25 When he had said this, he cried with a loud voice, “Lazarus, come out!” 2Ki 4:33-36Act 9:40Act 9:34Luk 7:14-151Ki 17:21-22Act 3:6Act 3:12Mrk 4:41

He who was dead came out, bound hand and foot with wrappings, and his face was wrapped around with a cloth. Jhn 5:25Jhn 20:7Jhn 11:25-26Jhn 5:21Luk 7:15Php 3:211Sa 2:6Act 20:9-12

Jesus said to them, “Free him, and let him go.”

Therefore many of the Jews who came to Mary and saw what Jesus did believed in him. Jhn 11:19Jhn 2:23Jhn 10:41Jhn 11:31Jhn 12:17-19Jhn 12:42Jhn 12:9-11Jhn 7:31 But some of them went away to the Pharisees and told them the things which Jesus had done. Jhn 9:13Luk 16:30-31Act 5:25Jhn 12:37Jhn 5:15-16 The chief priests therefore and the Pharisees gathered a council, and said, “What are we doing? For this man does many signs. Mat 26:3Act 4:16-17Act 4:5-6Jhn 11:57Jhn 12:19Jhn 2:11Mat 5:22Act 4:27-28 If we leave him alone like this, everyone will believe in him, and the Romans will come and take away both our place and our nation.” 1Th 2:15-16Act 5:28Dan 9:26-27Mat 23:35-38Mat 27:25Zec 14:1-2Deu 28:50-68Luk 11:52

But a certain one of them, Caiaphas, being high priest that year, said to them, “You know nothing at all, Jhn 11:51Jhn 18:13-14Mat 26:3Pro 26:12Act 4:6Luk 3:21Co 1:201Co 2:6 nor do you consider that it is advantageous for us that one man should die for the people, and that the whole nation not perish.” Jhn 18:14Luk 24:46Jhn 19:12Rom 3:8Jhn 11:48 Now he didn’t say this of himself, but being high priest that year, he prophesied that Jesus would die for the nation, 2Co 5:21Dan 9:261Sa 23:9Exo 28:30Gal 4:4-5Mat 20:281Co 13:21Sa 28:6 and not for the nation only, but that he might also gather together into one the children of God who are scattered abroad. Jhn 10:16Isa 49:61Jn 2:21Pe 1:1Eph 1:9-10Eph 2:14-22Rev 5:9Rom 9:25-26 So from that day forward they took counsel that they might put him to death. Act 5:33Act 9:23Jer 38:15Jer 38:4Jhn 11:47Jhn 12:10Mat 16:21Mat 22:46 Jesus therefore walked no more openly among the Jews, but departed from there into the country near the wilderness, to a city called Ephraim. Now the Passover of the Jews was at hand.
