Temple Construction Begins

(2 Chronicles 3:1–2)

In the four hundred and eightieth 1year after the Israelites had come out of the land of Egypt, in the month of Ziv, 2 the second month of the fourth year of Solomon’s reign over Israel, he began to build the house of the LORD. 2Ch 3:1-2Act 7:471Ch 29:191Ki 6:371Pe 2:51Co 6:192Co 6:16Col 2:7

The house that King Solomon built for the LORD was sixty cubits long, twenty cubits wide, and thirty cubits high. 3 Ezk 40:1-41Ezk 41:1-15Ezr 6:3-4Rev 21:16-17 The portico at the front of the main hall of the temple was twenty cubits 4long, extending across the width of the temple and projecting out ten cubits 5in front of the temple. 1Ch 28:112Ch 3:3-4Act 3:10-11Ezk 41:15Jhn 10:23Mat 4:5

He also had narrow windows framed high in the temple. Ezk 40:16Ezk 41:16Ezk 41:26Sng 2:9

The Chambers

Against the walls of the temple and the inner sanctuary, Solomon built a chambered structure around the temple, in which he constructed the side rooms. 1Ki 6:161Ki 6:19-211Ki 6:312Ch 4:202Ch 5:72Ch 5:9Psa 28:21Ch 23:28 The bottom floor was five cubits wide, 6 the middle floor six cubits, 7 and the third floor seven cubits. 8 He also placed offset ledges around the outside of the temple, so that nothing would be inserted into its walls.

The temple was constructed using finished stones cut at the quarry, so that no hammer or chisel or any other iron tool was heard in the temple while it was being built. Deu 27:5-61Pe 2:51Ki 5:17-18Exo 20:25Pro 24:272Co 5:5Act 9:31Col 1:12

The entrance to the bottom 9floor was on the south side of the temple. A stairway led up to the middle level, and from there to the third floor. Ezk 41:6-7

So Solomon built the temple and finished it, roofing it with beams and planks of cedar. 1Ki 6:141Ki 6:38 He built chambers all along the temple, each five cubits high and attached to the temple with beams of cedar.

God’s Promise to Solomon

Then the word of the LORD came to Solomon, saying: “As for this temple you are building, if you walk in My statutes, carry out My ordinances, and keep all My commandments by walking in them, I will fulfill through you the promise I made to your father David. 1Ch 22:10Col 1:231Ki 3:141Ki 9:3-62Sa 7:12-16Psa 132:121Ch 28:91Ki 2:3-4 And I will dwell among the Israelites and will not abandon My people Israel.” Deu 31:6Exo 25:8Lev 26:11Rev 21:3Heb 13:51Ki 8:27Deu 31:81Ch 28:20

The Temple’s Interior

(2 Chronicles 3:5–9)

So Solomon built the temple and finished it. 1Ki 6:381Ki 6:9Act 7:47-48 He lined the interior walls with cedar paneling from the floor of the temple to the ceiling, and he covered the floor with cypress 10boards. 1Ki 7:7

He partitioned off the twenty cubits at the rear of the temple with cedar boards from floor to ceiling to form within the temple an inner sanctuary, the Most Holy Place. 11 1Ki 8:62Ch 3:8Heb 9:3Lev 16:2Ezk 45:31Ki 6:19-201Ki 6:5Exo 25:21-22 And the main hall in front of this room was forty cubits long. 12

The cedar paneling inside the temple was carved with gourds and open flowers. Everything was cedar; not a stone could be seen. 1Ki 7:24

Solomon also prepared the inner sanctuary within the temple to set the ark of the covenant of the LORD there. 1Ki 6:161Ki 6:51Ki 8:6-102Ch 4:202Ch 5:7Exo 40:20-21Heb 9:3-4Psa 28:2 The inner sanctuary was twenty cubits long, twenty cubits wide, and twenty cubits high. He overlaid the inside with pure gold, and he also overlaid the altar of cedar. 13 1Ki 6:2-31Ki 6:221Ki 7:48Exo 30:1-3

So Solomon overlaid the inside of the temple with pure gold, and he extended gold chains 14across the front of the inner sanctuary, which was overlaid with gold. 1Ki 6:52Ch 3:14-162Ch 3:7-9Exo 26:29Exo 26:32-33Exo 36:34 So he overlaid with gold the whole interior of the temple, until everything was completely finished. He also overlaid with gold the entire altar that belonged to the inner sanctuary. Exo 30:1Exo 30:31Ki 6:202Ch 3:7-14Exo 30:5-6

The Cherubim

(2 Chronicles 3:10–13)

In the inner sanctuary he made two cherubim, each ten cubits high, out of olive wood. Exo 37:7-91Pe 1:122Ch 3:10-13Exo 25:18-22Ezk 10:2-22Gen 3:24Heb 1:14Isa 37:16 One wing of the first cherub was five cubits long, and the other wing was five cubits long as well. So the full wingspan was ten cubits. The second cherub also measured ten cubits; both cherubim had the same size and shape, and the height of each cherub was ten cubits.

And he placed the cherubim inside the innermost room of the temple. Since their wings were spread out, the wing of the first cherub touched one wall, while the wing of the second cherub touched the other wall, and in the middle of the room their wingtips touched. Exo 25:20Exo 37:92Ch 5:81Ki 8:72Ch 3:11 He also overlaid the cherubim with gold.

Then he carved the walls all around the temple, in both the inner and outer sanctuaries, with carved engravings of cherubim, palm trees, and open flowers. 1Ki 6:321Ki 6:182Ch 3:142Ch 4:2-5Eph 3:10Exo 36:8Luk 2:13-14Psa 103:20 And he overlaid the temple floor with gold in both the inner and outer sanctuaries. Isa 54:11-12Isa 60:17Rev 21:18-21

The Doors

For the entrance to the inner sanctuary, Solomon constructed doors of olive wood with five-sided doorposts. Heb 10:19-20Eph 3:18Jhn 10:9Jhn 14:6 The double doors were made of olive wood, and he carved into them cherubim, palm trees, and open flowers and overlaid the cherubim and palm trees with hammered gold. 1Ki 6:181Ki 6:29

In the same way he made four-sided doorposts of olive wood for the sanctuary entrance. The two doors were made of cypress wood, and each had two folding panels. Ezk 41:23-251Ki 5:8 He carved into them cherubim, palm trees, and open flowers; and he overlaid them with gold, hammered evenly over the carvings.

The Courtyard

Solomon built the inner courtyard with three rows of dressed stone and one row of trimmed cedar beams. 1Ki 7:122Ch 4:92Ch 7:7Exo 27:9-19Exo 38:9-20Rev 11:2

The foundation of the house of the LORD was laid in the fourth year of Solomon’s reign, in the month of Ziv. 1Ki 6:12Ch 3:2 In his eleventh year and eighth month, the month of Bul, 15 the temple was finished in every detail and according to every specification. So he built the temple in seven years. 1Ki 7:1Ezr 3:8-13Ezr 6:14-15Zec 4:91Ki 6:11Ki 6:9Jhn 2:20Zec 6:13-15
