The Destruction of Idols

When all this had ended, the Israelites in attendance went out to the cities of Judah and broke up the sacred pillars, chopped down the Asherah poles, and tore down the high places and altars throughout Judah and Benjamin, as well as in Ephraim and Manasseh, until they had utterly destroyed them all. Then all the Israelites returned to their cities, each to his own property. 2Ki 18:42Ch 32:121Ki 18:38-402Ch 14:32Ch 23:172Ch 30:1-272Ch 34:3-72Ki 17:2

Hezekiah reestablished the divisions of the priests and Levites—each of them according to their duties as priests or Levites—for the burnt offerings and peace offerings, for ministry, for giving thanks, and for singing praises at the gates of the LORD’s dwelling. 1Ch 24:11Ch 16:371Ch 16:4-61Ch 16:40-411Ch 23:1-261Ch 23:28-311Ch 25:1-32Ch 23:8

Contributions for Worship

The king contributed from his own possessions for the regular morning and evening burnt offerings and for the burnt offerings on the Sabbaths, New Moons, and appointed feasts, as written in the Law of the LORD. Ezk 45:172Ch 35:7Col 2:16-171Ch 26:262Ch 30:24Deu 16:1-17Exo 29:38-42Ezk 46:12-18 Moreover, he commanded the people living in Jerusalem to make a contribution for the priests and Levites so that they could devote themselves to the Law of the LORD. Mal 2:7Num 18:8-211Co 9:9-14Gal 6:6Neh 13:10-13Num 18:26-282Ch 31:16Lev 27:30-33

As soon as the order went out, the Israelites generously provided the firstfruits of the grain, new wine, oil, and honey, and of all the produce of the field, and they brought in an abundance—a tithe of everything. Neh 13:122Ch 24:10-11Exo 35:20-29Exo 35:5Exo 36:5-6Neh 10:35-39Neh 12:44Neh 13:31 And the Israelites and Judahites who lived in the cities of Judah also brought a tithe of their herds and flocks and a tithe of the holy things consecrated to the LORD their God, and they laid them in large heaps. Lev 27:302Ch 11:16-17Deu 14:28

In the third month they began building up the heaps, and they finished in the seventh month. Lev 23:16-24 When Hezekiah and his officials came and viewed the heaps, they blessed the LORD and His people Israel. Eph 1:31Ch 29:10-201Ki 8:14-151Ki 8:551Pe 1:31Th 3:92Ch 6:32Co 8:16

Then Hezekiah questioned the priests and Levites about the heaps, and Azariah, the chief priest of the household of Zadok, answered him, “Since the people began to bring their contributions into the house of the LORD, we have had enough to eat and there is plenty left over, because the LORD has blessed His people; this great abundance is what is left over.” Mal 3:101Ch 6:81Ki 2:352Ch 26:172Co 9:8-112Ki 4:43-44Ezk 44:15Gen 26:12

Hezekiah Organizes the Priests

Then Hezekiah commanded them to prepare storerooms in the house of the LORD, and they did so. Neh 10:38-39Neh 13:12-13Neh 13:5 And they faithfully brought in the contributions, tithes, and dedicated gifts. Conaniah the Levite was the officer in charge of them, and his brother Shimei was second. 2Ch 35:91Ch 26:20-262Ki 12:15 Jehiel, Azaziah, Nahath, Asahel, Jerimoth, Jozabad, Eliel, Ismachiah, Mahath, and Benaiah were overseers under the authority of Conaniah and his brother Shimei, by appointment of King Hezekiah and of Azariah the chief official of the house of God. 1Ch 24:51Ch 9:112Ch 30:122Ch 31:10-112Ch 31:4Neh 11:11

Kore son of Imnah the Levite, the keeper of the East Gate, was in charge of the freewill offerings given to God, distributing the contributions to the LORD and the consecrated gifts. 1Ch 26:121Ch 26:141Ch 26:17Deu 12:17Deu 12:6Deu 16:10Ezr 1:4Ezr 3:5 Under his authority, Eden, Miniamin, Jeshua, Shemaiah, Amariah, and Shecaniah faithfully distributed portions to their fellow priests in their cities, according to their divisions, old and young alike. 1 Jos 21:9-191Ch 25:81Ch 6:54-601Ch 9:222Ch 29:122Ch 31:13

In addition, they distributed portions to the males registered by genealogy who were three years of age or older—to all who would enter the house of the LORD for their daily duties for service in the responsibilities of their divisions— Ezr 3:41Ch 23:3Lev 21:22-23 and to the priests enrolled according to their families in the genealogy, as well as to the Levites twenty years of age or older, according to their duties and divisions. 1Ch 23:241Ch 23:271Ch 24:202Ch 31:2Ezr 2:59Num 17:2-3Num 3:15Num 3:20 The genealogy included all the little ones, wives, sons, and daughters in the whole assembly. For they had faithfully consecrated themselves as holy. 1Ch 9:222Ch 31:15Isa 5:16Rom 15:16

As for the priests, the descendants of Aaron, who lived on the farmlands around each of their cities or in any other city, men were designated by name to distribute a portion to every male among the priests and to every Levite listed by the genealogies. 2Ch 31:12-15Lev 25:34Num 35:2-52Ch 28:151Ch 6:541Ch 6:60

So this is what Hezekiah did throughout Judah. He did what was good and upright and true before the LORD his God. 2Ki 20:32Ki 22:2Act 24:161Th 2:103Jn 1:5Jhn 1:471Ki 15:5 He was diligent in every work that he began in the service of the house of God, and in the law and the commandments, in order to seek his God.
