David’s Mighty Men
(1 Chronicles 11:10–47)
These are the names of David’s mighty men: 1Ch 11:11-471Ch 27:21Ch 27:32
Josheb-basshebeth the Tahchemonite 2was chief of the Three. 3 He wielded his spear against 4eight hundred men, whom he killed at one time.
Next in command was Eleazar son of Dodo 5the Ahohite. As one of the three mighty men, he went with David to taunt the Philistines who had gathered for battle at Pas-dammim. The men of Israel retreated, 1Ch 11:12-141Ch 27:41Sa 17:261Sa 17:101Sa 17:361Sa 17:45-46Isa 63:3Isa 63:5 but Eleazar stood his ground and struck the Philistines until his hand grew weary and stuck to his sword. The LORD brought about a great victory that day. Then the troops returned to him, but only to plunder the dead. 1Sa 11:131Sa 19:51Sa 14:231Sa 14:62Co 4:52Ki 5:1Eph 6:10-18Isa 53:12
And after him was Shammah son of Agee the Hararite. When the Philistines had banded together near a field full of lentils, Israel’s troops fled from them. 1Ch 11:13-141Ch 11:272Sa 23:33 But Shammah took his stand in the middle of the field, defended it, and struck down the Philistines. So the LORD brought about a great victory. 2Sa 23:10Pro 21:31Psa 3:8Psa 44:2
At harvest time, three of the thirty chief men went down to David at the cave of Adullam, while a company of Philistines was encamped in the Valley of Rephaim. 1Sa 22:12Sa 5:181Ch 11:15-191Ch 14:92Sa 5:22Isa 17:5Jos 12:15Jos 15:35 At that time David was in the stronghold, and the garrison of the Philistines was at Bethlehem. 1Sa 22:4-51Ch 12:161Sa 10:51Sa 13:231Sa 13:41Sa 14:61Sa 22:11Sa 24:22 David longed for water and said, “Oh, that someone would get me a drink of water from the well near the gate of Bethlehem!” Jhn 4:14Isa 41:17Isa 44:3Jhn 4:10Jhn 7:37Num 11:4-5Psa 42:1-2Psa 63:1
So the three mighty men broke through the Philistine camp, drew water from the well near the gate of Bethlehem, and brought it back to David. But he refused to drink it; instead, he poured it out to the LORD, Gen 35:142Co 5:141Sa 7:6Lam 2:19Num 28:7Php 2:17Rom 5:71Sa 19:5 saying, “Far be it from me, O LORD, to do this! Is this not the blood of the men who risked their lives?” So he refused to drink it. Lev 17:101Co 15:301Ki 21:31Sa 2:301Sa 26:112Sa 20:20Gen 44:17Gen 9:4
Such were the exploits of the three mighty men.
Now Abishai, the brother of Joab and son of Zeruiah, was chief of the Three, 6 and he lifted his spear against three hundred men, killed them, and won a name along with the Three. 2Sa 10:102Sa 10:141Ch 11:20-212Sa 18:21Ch 2:161Sa 26:6-82Sa 2:182Sa 20:10 Was he not more honored than the Three? 7 And he became their commander, even though he was not included among the Three. Mat 13:23Mat 13:81Ch 11:251Co 15:412Sa 23:132Sa 23:162Sa 23:9
And Benaiah son of Jehoiada was a man of valor 8from Kabzeel, a man of many exploits. He struck down two champions 9of Moab, and on a snowy day he went down into a pit and killed a lion. 2Sa 20:232Sa 8:18Jos 15:211Ch 11:22-241Ki 1:261Ki 1:381Ki 1:81Ki 2:29-35 He also killed an Egyptian, a huge man. Although the Egyptian had a spear in his hand, Benaiah went against him with a club, snatched the spear from his hand, and killed the Egyptian with his own spear. 1Ch 11:231Sa 17:51Col 2:15 These were the exploits of Benaiah son of Jehoiada, who won a name alongside the three mighty men. He was most honored among the Thirty, but he did not become one of the Three. And David appointed him over his guard. 1Ch 27:61Sa 22:142Sa 20:232Sa 8:8
