A Lament for the Princes of Israel

“As for you, take up a lament for the princes of Israel Ezk 26:17Ezk 27:22Ki 23:29-302Ki 23:342Ki 24:122Ki 24:62Ki 25:5-7Ezk 19:14 and say: Isa 11:6-9Isa 5:29Job 4:11Nam 2:11-12Psa 58:6Zec 11:3Zep 3:1-4

‘What was your mother?

A lioness among the lions!

She lay down among the young lions;

she reared her cubs.

She brought up one of her cubs, 2Ch 36:1-22Ki 23:31-32Ezk 19:6Ezk 22:25

and he became a young lion.

After learning to tear his prey,

he devoured men.

When the nations heard of him, 2Ch 36:42Ki 23:33-342Ch 36:6Jer 22:11-122Ki 23:31Jer 22:18

he was trapped in their pit.

With hooks they led him away

to the land of Egypt.

When she saw that she had waited in vain, 2Ki 23:34-37Ezk 19:3

that her hope was lost,

she took another of her cubs

and made him a young lion.

He prowled among the lions, 2Ch 36:52Ch 36:92Ki 24:1-72Ki 24:9Jer 22:13-17Jer 26:1-24Jer 36:1-32

and became a young lion.

After learning to tear his prey,

he devoured men.

He broke down their strongholds 1 Ezk 30:12Amo 6:8Ezk 12:19Ezk 22:25Mic 1:2Pro 19:12Pro 28:15-16Pro 28:3

and devastated their cities.

The land and everything in it

shuddered at the sound of his roaring.

Then the nations set out against him Ezk 12:13Ezk 19:4Lam 4:202Ki 24:1-62Ki 24:11Ezk 17:20

from the provinces on every side.

They spread their net over him;

he was trapped in their pit.

With hooks they caged him 2Ch 36:6Ezk 6:22Ki 24:15Ezk 19:7Ezk 36:1Jer 22:18-19Jer 36:30-31

and brought him to the king of Babylon.

They brought him into captivity

so that his roar was heard no longer

on the mountains of Israel.

Your mother was like a vine in your vineyard, 2 Psa 80:8-11Deu 8:7Mat 21:33-41Num 24:6-7Deu 8:9Ezk 15:2-8Ezk 17:6Ezk 19:2

planted by the water;

it was fruitful and full of branches

because of the abundant waters.

It had strong branches, fit for a ruler’s scepter. Ezk 31:3Dan 4:11Psa 80:15Dan 4:20-21Ezk 19:12Ezk 19:14Ezk 21:10Ezk 21:13

It towered high above the thick branches,

conspicuous for its height

and for its dense foliage.

But it was uprooted in fury, Ezk 17:10Hos 13:15Isa 27:11Ezk 15:4Ezk 19:11Jer 31:282Ki 23:292Ki 23:34

cast down to the ground,

and the east wind dried up its fruit.

Its strong branches were stripped off

and they withered;

the fire consumed them.

Now it is planted in the wilderness, Hos 2:3Ezk 19:102Ki 24:12-16Ezk 20:35Jer 52:27-31Psa 63:1Psa 68:6Deu 28:47-48

in a dry and thirsty land.

Fire has gone out from its main branch 2Ki 24:20Ezk 19:1Ezk 19:11Isa 9:18-19Psa 80:15-162Ch 36:13Amo 9:11Ezk 15:4

and devoured its fruit;

on it no strong branch remains

fit for a ruler’s scepter.’

This is a lament and shall be used as a lament.”
