Jacob Returns to Bethel

So Jacob told his household and all who were with him, “Get rid of the foreign gods that are among you. Purify yourselves and change your garments. As they set out, a terror from God fell over the surrounding cities, so that they did not pursue Jacob’s sons. After Jacob had returned from Paddan-aram, 5 God appeared to him again and blessed him. And God told him, “I am God Almighty. 8 Be fruitful and multiply. A nation—even a company of nations—shall come from you, and kings shall descend from you. So Jacob set up a pillar in the place where God had spoken with him—a stone marker—and he poured out a drink offering on it and anointed it with oil. Gen 28:18-191Sa 7:12Exo 17:15Gen 31:45Gen 35:20 Jacob called the place where God had spoken with him Bethel. 9 Gen 28:19

Benjamin Born, Rachel Dies

Later, they set out from Bethel, and while they were still some distance from Ephrath, Rachel began to give birth, and her labor was difficult. The Sons of Jacob

(1 Chronicles 2:1–2)

Jacob had twelve sons:

The sons of Leah were Reuben the firstborn of Jacob, Simeon, Levi, Judah, Issachar, and Zebulun. Gen 30:18-20Gen 29:32-35Gen 46:8-15Exo 1:2-4Gen 33:2

The sons of Rachel were Joseph and Benjamin. Gen 30:22-24Gen 35:16-18Gen 46:19-22

The sons of Rachel’s maidservant Bilhah were Dan and Naphtali. Gen 30:4-8Gen 37:2Gen 46:23-25

And the sons of Leah’s maidservant Zilpah were Gad and Asher. Gen 25:20Gen 30:9-13Gen 31:18Gen 35:18Gen 46:16-18Gen 28:2

These are the sons of Jacob, who were born to him in Paddan-aram.

The Death of Isaac

Jacob returned to his father Isaac at Mamre, near Kiriath-arba (that is, Hebron), where Abraham and Isaac had stayed. Gen 13:18Gen 23:19Gen 18:1Gen 23:2Jos 15:132Sa 2:12Sa 2:112Sa 2:3
