Drought, Famine, Sword, and Plague

This is the word of the LORD that came to Jeremiah concerning the drought: Jer 17:8

“Judah mourns Isa 3:26Jer 8:211Sa 5:12Lam 4:8-9Zec 7:13Jer 11:111Sa 9:16Exo 2:24

and her gates languish.

Her people wail for the land,

and a cry goes up from Jerusalem.

The nobles send their servants for water; 2Sa 15:302Ki 18:31Jer 2:13Psa 40:14Amo 4:81Ki 17:71Ki 18:5-62Sa 19:4

they go to the cisterns, but find no water;

their jars return empty.

They are ashamed and humiliated;

they cover their heads.

The ground is cracked Jol 1:11Jol 1:19-20Jer 3:3Deu 29:23Jol 1:17Lev 26:19-20Deu 28:23-24

because no rain has fallen on the land.

The farmers are ashamed;

they cover their heads.

Even the doe in the field deserts her newborn fawn Psa 29:9Isa 15:6Job 39:1-4

because there is no grass.

Wild donkeys stand on barren heights; Jer 2:24Job 39:5-6Jol 1:181Sa 14:29Lam 4:17Lam 5:17

they pant for air like jackals; 1

their eyes fail for lack of pasture.”

Although our iniquities testify against us, O LORD, Psa 25:11Hos 5:5Jer 14:20-21Isa 59:12Jer 5:6Dan 9:5-16Jer 2:19Dan 9:18-19

act for the sake of Your name.

Indeed, our rebellions are many;

we have sinned against You.

O Hope of Israel, Jer 17:13Jer 50:7Isa 43:3Psa 50:15Isa 43:11Isa 45:21Jol 3:16Psa 37:39-40

its Savior in times of distress,

why are You like a stranger in the land,

like a traveler who stays but a night?

Why are You like a man taken by surprise, Isa 59:1Isa 63:19Jer 15:16Num 11:23Num 14:15-16Psa 46:52Co 6:16Dan 9:18-19

like a warrior powerless to save?

Yet You are among us, O LORD,

and we are called by Your name.

Do not forsake us!

This is what the LORD says about this people: Hos 9:9Hos 8:13Psa 119:101Amo 5:22Jer 6:20Heb 8:12Jer 31:341Ki 17:18

“Truly they love to wander;

they have not restrained their feet.

So the LORD does not accept them;

He will now remember their guilt

and call their sins to account.”

Then the LORD said to me, “Do not pray for the well-being of this people. Jer 7:16Jer 11:14Exo 32:32-34Exo 32:10Jer 15:1 Although they may fast, I will not listen to their cry; although they may offer burnt offerings and grain offerings, I will not accept them. Instead, I will finish them off by sword and famine and plague.” Jer 11:11Ezk 8:18Pro 1:28Ezk 14:21Jer 6:20Mic 3:4Zec 7:13Jer 16:4

“Ah, Lord GOD!” I replied, “Look, the prophets are telling them, ‘You will not see the sword or suffer famine, but I will give you lasting peace in this place.’” Jer 6:142Pe 2:1Jer 23:17Jer 4:10Mic 3:11Jer 5:12Jer 8:11Ezk 13:10-16

“The prophets are prophesying lies in My name,” replied the LORD. “I did not send them or appoint them or speak to them. They are prophesying to you a false vision, a worthless divination, the futility and delusion of their own minds. Ezk 13:6-7Ezk 12:24Jer 29:8-9Isa 30:10-11Jer 29:31Lam 2:142Th 2:9-11Jer 27:9-10

Therefore this is what the LORD says about the prophets who prophesy in My name: I did not send them, yet they say, ‘No sword or famine will touch this land.’ Jer 5:12-13Ezk 14:101Ki 22:252Pe 2:1-32Pe 2:14-17Amo 7:17Jer 20:6Jer 23:14-15

By sword and famine these very prophets will meet their end! And the people to whom they prophesy will be thrown into the streets of Jerusalem because of famine and sword. There will be no one to bury them or their wives, their sons or their daughters. I will pour out their own evil upon them. Jer 15:2-3Jer 7:33Pro 1:31Psa 79:2-3Jer 13:22-25Jer 16:4Jer 18:21Isa 9:16

You are to speak this word to them: Jer 8:21Jer 13:17Jer 9:1Lam 1:15-16Lam 2:13Mic 6:13Isa 37:22Jer 10:19

‘My eyes overflow with tears;

day and night they do not cease,

for the virgin daughter of my people

has been shattered by a crushing blow,

a severely grievous wound.

If I go out to the country, Ezk 7:15Lam 1:20Jer 8:10Deu 28:36Jer 5:31Jer 52:6-7Jer 6:132Pe 2:3

I see those slain by the sword;

if I enter the city,

I see those ravaged by famine!

For both prophet and priest

travel to a land they do not know.’”

Do You despise Zion?

Why have You stricken us

so that we are beyond healing?

We hoped for peace,

but no good has come,

but there was only terror.
