Crossing the Jordan

Early the next morning Joshua got up and left Shittim 1with all the Israelites. They went as far as the Jordan, where they camped before crossing over. Jos 2:1Mrk 1:35Gen 22:3Jer 25:3Jer 26:5Jer 7:13Mic 6:5Num 25:1

After three days the officers went through the camp Jos 1:10-11 and commanded the people: “When you see the ark of the covenant of the LORD your God being carried by the Levitical priests, you are to set out from your positions and follow it. Deu 31:92Sa 6:13Deu 31:25Exo 13:21-22Jos 3:8Num 10:331Ch 15:11-122Sa 6:3 But keep a distance of about two thousand cubits 2between yourselves and the ark. Do not go near it, so that you can see the way to go, since you have never traveled this way before.” Psa 89:7Exo 3:5Heb 12:28-291Ch 11:2Exo 19:12Exo 4:10Gen 31:2Isa 30:33

Then Joshua told the people, “Consecrate yourselves, for tomorrow the LORD will do wonders among you.” Jos 7:13Lev 20:71Sa 16:5Jol 2:16Jhn 17:19Exo 19:10-15Lev 10:3Psa 86:10 And he said to the priests, “Take the ark of the covenant and go on ahead of the people.” So they carried the ark of the covenant and went ahead of them. Jhn 14:2-3Jos 3:3Mic 2:13Num 10:33Num 14:15Heb 6:20

Now the LORD said to Joshua, “Today I will begin to exalt you in the sight of all Israel, so they may know that I am with you just as I was with Moses. Jos 4:14Jos 1:51Ch 29:252Ch 1:1Psa 18:35Php 2:9-11Jhn 17:1Job 7:17 Command the priests carrying the ark of the covenant: ‘When you reach the edge of the waters, stand in the Jordan.’” Jos 3:17Jos 3:31Ch 15:11-122Ch 17:8-92Ch 29:152Ch 29:272Ch 29:302Ch 29:4-11

So Joshua told the Israelites, “Come here and listen to the words of the LORD your God.” Deu 4:1Deu 12:8 He continued, “This is how you will know that the living God is among you and that He will surely drive out before you the Canaanites, Hittites, Hivites, Perizzites, Girgashites, Amorites, and Jebusites. Deu 7:1Exo 33:2Psa 44:2-3Heb 10:311Sa 17:262Ki 19:4Deu 31:17Exo 23:27-30 Behold, the ark of the covenant of the Lord of all the earth will go ahead of you into the Jordan. Now choose twelve men from the tribes of Israel, one from each tribe. Jos 4:2Jos 4:4Jos 4:9 When the feet of the priests who carry the ark of the LORD—the Lord of all the earth—touch down in the waters of the Jordan, its flowing waters will be cut off and will stand up in a heap.” Exo 15:8Psa 78:13Jos 3:11Jos 3:15-16Exo 14:19-22Hab 3:15Psa 114:3-5Psa 33:7

So when the people broke camp to cross the Jordan, the priests carried the ark of the covenant ahead of them. Act 7:44-451Co 1:24-25Deu 31:26Heb 9:4Jer 3:16Jos 3:3Jos 3:6Jos 6:6

Now the Jordan overflows its banks throughout the harvest season. But as soon as the priests carrying the ark reached the Jordan and their feet touched the water’s edge, 1Ch 12:15Jer 12:5Jer 49:19Jos 3:13Jos 4:18Deu 16:1-9Isa 26:6Jos 5:10-12 the flowing water stood still. It backed up as far upstream as Adam, a city in the area of Zarethan, while the water flowing toward the Sea of the Arabah (the Salt Sea 3) was completely cut off. So the people crossed over opposite Jericho.
