Twelve Stones from the Jordan
When the whole nation had finished crossing the Jordan, the LORD said to Joshua, Deu 27:2Jos 3:17 “Choose twelve men from among the people, one from each tribe, Jos 3:121Ki 18:31Deu 1:23Mat 10:1-5Num 1:4-15Num 13:2Num 34:18 and command them: ‘Take up for yourselves twelve stones from the middle of the Jordan where the priests were standing, carry them with you, and set them down in the place where you spend the night.’” Jos 4:19-20Jos 3:13Jos 4:81Sa 7:12Deu 27:1-26Gen 28:22Jos 24:27Luk 19:40
So Joshua summoned the twelve men he had appointed from the Israelites, one from each tribe, Jos 4:2Mrk 3:14-19 and said to them, “Cross over before the ark of the LORD your God into the middle of the Jordan. Each of you is to take a stone upon his shoulder, according to the number of the tribes of Israel, to serve as a sign among you. In the future, when your children ask, ‘What do these stones mean to you?’ Exo 13:14Jos 4:21Psa 44:1Deu 6:20-21Deu 11:19Jos 22:27Exo 12:26-27Isa 38:19 you are to tell them, ‘The waters of the Jordan were cut off before the ark of the covenant of the LORD. When it crossed the Jordan, the waters were cut off.’ Therefore these stones will be a memorial to the Israelites forever.” Exo 12:14Exo 28:12Num 16:40Psa 111:4Jos 3:13-161Co 11:24Isa 66:3Jos 4:6
Thus the Israelites did as Joshua had commanded them. They took up twelve stones from the middle of the Jordan, one for each tribe of Israel, just as the LORD had told Joshua; and they carried them to the camp, where they set them down. Jos 1:16-18Jos 4:2-5Jos 4:20
Joshua also set up twelve stones in the middle of the Jordan, 1 in the place where the priests who carried the ark of the covenant stood. And the stones are there to this day. 1Sa 7:121Sa 30:252Ch 5:92Sa 4:3Deu 34:6Exo 24:12Exo 28:21Gen 26:33
Now the priests who carried the ark remained standing in the middle of the Jordan until the people had completed everything the LORD had commanded Joshua to tell them, just as Moses had directed Joshua. The people hurried across, Jos 3:132Co 6:2Deu 31:9Ecc 9:10Exo 12:39Heb 3:7-8Isa 28:16Jos 3:16-17 and after everyone had finished crossing, the priests with the ark of the LORD crossed in the sight of the people. Jos 3:8Jos 3:17Jos 4:18 The Reubenites, the Gadites, and the half-tribe of Manasseh crossed over before the Israelites, armed for battle as Moses had instructed them. Jos 1:14Num 32:20-32 About 40,000 troops armed for battle crossed over before the LORD into the plains of Jericho. Eph 6:112Ki 25:5Jer 39:5Jer 52:8Jos 5:10
On that day the LORD exalted Joshua in the sight of all Israel, and they revered him all the days of his life, just as they had revered Moses. Jos 3:72Ch 30:121Ki 3:28Jos 1:16-18Rom 13:41Sa 12:18Exo 14:31Pro 24:21
Then the LORD said to Joshua, “Command the priests who carry the ark of the Testimony 2to come up from the Jordan.” Exo 25:16-22Jos 3:3-6Rev 11:19
So Joshua commanded the priests, “Come up from the Jordan.” Gen 8:16-18Act 16:23Act 16:35-39Dan 3:26
When the priests carrying the ark of the covenant of the LORD came up out of the Jordan and their feet touched the dry land, the waters of the Jordan returned to their course and overflowed all the banks as before. Jos 3:151Ch 12:15Exo 14:26-28Isa 8:8Jos 3:13
The Camp at Gilgal
