The Demons and the Pigs

(Matthew 8:28–34; Luke 8:26–39)

On the other side of the sea, they arrived in the region of the Gerasenes. 1 Luk 8:26-39Mat 8:28-34Mrk 4:35 As soon as Jesus got out of the boat, He was met by a man with an unclean spirit, who was coming from the tombs. Mrk 1:23Isa 65:4Mrk 5:8Luk 9:42Luk 8:27Mrk 1:26Mrk 3:30Mrk 4:1 This man had been living in the tombs and could no longer be restrained, even with chains. Isa 65:4Luk 8:29Dan 4:32-33Mrk 9:18-22 Though he was often bound with chains and shackles, he had broken the chains and shattered the shackles. Now there was no one with the strength to subdue him. Jas 3:7-8 Night and day in the tombs and in the mountains he kept crying out and cutting himself with stones. 1Ki 18:28Job 2:7-8Jhn 8:44

When the man saw Jesus from a distance, he ran and fell on his knees before Him. Jas 2:19Psa 66:3Luk 4:41Psa 72:9Act 16:17 And he shouted in a loud voice, “What do You want with me, Jesus, Son of the Most High God? I beg You before God not to torture me!” Mat 8:29Act 16:17Jud 1:6Mat 26:63Act 19:13Luk 8:28Mat 4:3Mrk 3:11 For Jesus had already declared, “Come out of this man, you unclean spirit!” Act 16:18Mrk 1:25Mrk 9:25-26

“What is your name?” Jesus asked. Luk 8:30Mrk 5:15Mat 26:53Luk 11:21-26Mat 12:45

“My name is Legion,” he replied, “for we are many.” And he begged Jesus repeatedly not to send them out of that region. Mrk 3:22Mrk 5:13

There on the nearby hillside a large herd of pigs was feeding. Deu 14:8Isa 65:4Isa 66:3Lev 11:7-8Luk 8:32Mat 8:30 So the demons begged Jesus, “Send us to the pigs, so that we may enter them.” 1Pe 5:82Co 2:11Job 1:10-12Luk 22:31-32Job 2:5

He gave them permission, and the unclean spirits came out and went into the pigs, and the herd of about two thousand rushed down the steep bank into the sea and drowned in the water. 2 1Ki 22:221Pe 3:22Jhn 8:44Job 2:6Mat 8:32Job 1:12Rev 13:5-7Rev 20:7

Those tending the pigs ran off and reported this in the town and countryside, and the people went out to see what had happened. Luk 8:34Mat 8:33 When they came to Jesus, they saw the man who had been possessed by the legion of demons sitting there, clothed and in his right mind; and they were afraid. Those who had seen it described what had happened to the demon-possessed man and also to the pigs. And the people began to beg Jesus to leave their region. Mat 8:34Mrk 1:24Luk 8:37Act 16:39Gen 26:16Job 21:14-15Luk 5:8Mrk 5:7

As He was getting into the boat, the man who had been possessed by the demons begged to go with Him. So the man went away and began to proclaim throughout the Decapolis 3how much Jesus had done for him. And everyone was amazed. Mat 4:25Mrk 7:31

The Healing Touch of Jesus

(Matthew 9:18–26; Luke 8:40–56)

When Jesus had again crossed by boat to the other side, a large crowd gathered around Him beside the sea. Mat 9:1Mrk 4:1Luk 8:40 A synagogue leader named Jairus arrived, and seeing Jesus, he fell at His feet Luk 13:14Act 13:15Act 18:17Act 18:8Mrk 5:35-36Luk 5:8Mat 9:18-26Mrk 5:33 and pleaded with Him urgently, “My little daughter is near death. Please come and place Your hands on her, so that she will be healed and live.” Luk 13:13Luk 4:40Mrk 16:18Act 28:82Ki 5:112Sa 12:15-16Jas 5:14-15Luk 4:38

So Jesus went with him, and a large crowd followed and pressed around Him. Mrk 5:31Luk 7:6Mrk 3:20Mrk 3:9-10Act 10:38Luk 12:1Luk 19:3Luk 8:42 And a woman was there who had suffered from bleeding for twelve years. Instead, her condition had only grown worse. Jer 30:12-13Jer 8:22Job 13:4Psa 108:12Jer 51:8

When the woman heard about Jesus, she came up through the crowd behind Him and touched His cloak. Act 19:12Act 5:15Mat 14:36Mrk 6:562Ki 13:21 For she kept saying, “If only I touch His garments, I will be healed.” Immediately her bleeding stopped, and she sensed in her body that she was healed of her affliction. At once Jesus was aware that power had gone out from Him. Turning to the crowd, He asked, “Who touched My garments?” Luk 6:19Luk 8:46Luk 5:171Pe 2:9

His disciples answered, “You can see the crowd pressing in on You, and yet You ask, ‘Who touched Me?’” Luk 8:45Luk 9:12

But He kept looking around to see who had done this. Then the woman, knowing what had happened to her, came and fell down before Him trembling in fear, and she told Him the whole truth. Luk 8:47Luk 1:12Luk 1:29Mrk 4:41Psa 103:2-5Psa 116:12-14Psa 30:2Psa 66:16

“Daughter,” said Jesus, “your faith has healed you. Go in peace and be free of your affliction.” Luk 8:48Mat 9:22Luk 7:50Luk 18:42Mrk 5:29Act 14:9Luk 17:19Mat 9:2

While He was still speaking, messengers from the house of Jairus arrived and said, “Your daughter is dead; why bother the Teacher anymore?” Jhn 11:39Luk 8:49Jhn 11:28Jhn 5:25Luk 7:6-7Mrk 10:17Mrk 5:22Jhn 11:21

But Jesus overheard 4their conversation and said to Jairus, “Do not be afraid; just believe.” Luk 8:50Mat 9:28-29Jhn 11:40Mrk 9:23Rom 4:18-24Mrk 5:34Jhn 4:48-502Ch 20:20 And He did not allow anyone to accompany Him except Peter, James, and John the brother of James. When they arrived at the house of the synagogue leader, Jesus saw the commotion and the people weeping and wailing loudly. Luk 8:52-53Mat 9:23-24Act 9:39Jer 9:17-20Mat 11:17Mrk 5:22 He went inside and asked, “Why all this commotion and weeping? After He had put them all outside, He took the child’s father and mother and His own companions, and went in to see the child. Taking her by the hand, Jesus said, “Talitha koum!” which means, “Little girl, I say to you, get up!” Mrk 1:31Luk 7:14-15Jhn 5:28-29Luk 8:54-55Act 9:40-41Php 3:21Gen 1:3Jhn 11:43-44 Immediately the girl got up and began to walk around.
