The Destruction of Edom

This is what the Lord GOD says about Edom—
We have heard a message from the LORD;
an envoy has been sent among the nations
to say, “Rise up,
and let us go to battle against her!”—

you will be deeply despised.

O dwellers in the clefts of the rocks 1
whose habitation is the heights,
who say in your heart,
‘Who can bring me down to the ground?’

and make your nest among the stars,
even from there I will bring you down,”
declares the LORD.

if robbers by night—
oh, how you will be ruined—
would they not steal only what they wanted?
If grape gatherers came to you,
would they not leave some gleanings?

his hidden treasures sought out!

will drive you to the border;
the men at peace with you
will deceive and overpower you.
Those who eat your bread 2
will set a trap for you
without your awareness of it.

will I not destroy the wise men of Edom
and the men of understanding
in the mountains of Esau?

will be terrified,
so that everyone in the mountains of Esau
will be cut down in the slaughter.

you will be covered with shame
and cut off forever.

while strangers carried off his wealth
and foreigners entered his gate
and cast lots for Jerusalem,
you were just like one of them.

your brother’s day of misfortune,
nor rejoice over the people of Judah
in the day of their destruction,
nor boast proudly 3
in the day of their distress.

in the day of their disaster,
nor gloat over their affliction
in the day of their disaster,
nor loot their wealth
in the day of their disaster.
Nor should you stand at the crossroads Amo 1:6Amo 1:9Gen 35:3Isa 37:3Jer 30:7Oba 1:12Psa 31:8
to cut off their fugitives,
nor deliver up their survivors
in the day of their distress.
The Deliverance of Israel
For the Day of the LORD is near Jas 2:13Hab 2:8Mat 7:2Ezk 30:3Jdg 1:7Jer 49:12Jer 50:29Jol 3:11-14
for all the nations.
As you have done, it will be done to you;
your recompense will return upon your own head.
For as you drank on My holy mountain, Jol 3:17Jer 49:12Isa 51:22-23Jer 25:15-161Pe 4:17Hab 1:9Isa 29:7-8Isa 49:25-26
so all the nations will drink continually.
They will drink and gulp it down;
they will be as if they had never existed.
But on Mount Zion there will be deliverance, Amo 9:11-15Rev 21:27Isa 14:1-2Jol 3:19-21Amo 9:8Jol 2:32Isa 60:21Jol 3:17
and it will be holy,
and the house of Jacob
will reclaim their possession.
Then the house of Jacob will be a blazing fire, Zec 12:6Isa 10:17Ezk 37:19Mic 5:8Isa 5:241Co 3:122Sa 19:20Amo 5:15
and the house of Joseph a burning flame;
but the house of Esau will be stubble—
Jacob will set it ablaze and consume it.
Therefore no survivor will remain
from the house of Esau.”
For the LORD has spoken.
Those from the Negev will possess the mountains of Esau; Amo 9:12Jer 32:44Zep 2:4-7Ezk 36:28Ezk 37:21-25Jer 31:4-6Mal 1:4-51Ch 5:26
those from the foothills 4will possess the land of the Philistines.
They will occupy the fields of Ephraim and Samaria,
and Benjamin will possess Gilead.
And the exiles of this host of the Israelites 1Ki 17:9-10Luk 4:26Jer 32:44Jer 33:13Amo 9:14-15Ezk 34:12-13Hos 1:10-11Jer 13:19
will possess the land of the Canaanites as far as Zarephath;
and the exiles from Jerusalem who are in Sepharad
will possess the cities of the Negev.

to rule over the mountains of Esau.
And the kingdom will belong to the LORD.
