The Words of Agur

These are the words of Agur son of Jakeh—the burden that this man declared to Ithiel: Pro 31:12Pe 1:19-21

“I am weary, O God,

and worn out. 1

Surely I am the most ignorant of men, 1Co 3:18Psa 73:22Pro 5:121Co 8:22Pe 2:12-16Isa 6:5Jas 1:5Jer 10:14

and I lack the understanding of a man.

I have not learned wisdom, Eph 3:18-19Pro 9:10Rev 3:7Rom 11:33Amo 7:14-15Isa 30:11Isa 57:15Isa 6:10

and I have no knowledge of the Holy One.

Who has gathered the wind in His hands?

Who has bound up the waters in His cloak?

Who has established all the ends of the earth?

What is His name, and what is the name of His Son—

surely you know!

He is a shield to those who take refuge in Him.

lest He rebuke you and prove you a liar.

Two things I ask of You— Luk 10:42Psa 27:42Ki 2:91Ki 3:5-9Psa 21:2

do not refuse me before I die:

Or I may become poor and steal,

profaning the name of my God.

Do not slander a servant to his master, Ecc 7:21Rom 14:42Ch 24:22-242Sa 19:26-27Dan 3:8-18Dan 6:13Dan 6:24Pro 24:23-24

There is a generation of those who curse their fathers Pro 20:20Pro 30:17Deu 27:16Exo 21:17Pro 30:12-14Lev 20:9Deu 21:20-211Ti 5:4

and yet unwashed of their filth.

and whose jaws are knives,

There are three things that are never satisfied, four that never say, ‘Enough!’:

Sheol, Pro 27:20Hab 2:5Gen 30:1

the barren womb,

and fire that never says, ‘Enough!’

As for the eye that mocks a father Deu 21:18-21Pro 23:22Pro 30:112Sa 18:14-17Lev 20:9Gen 9:21-27Pro 20:201Sa 17:44

may the ravens of the valley pluck it out

and young vultures devour it.

There are three things too wonderful for me, four that I cannot understand: Job 42:3Psa 139:6

the way of an eagle in the sky, Isa 40:31Job 39:27Exo 22:16

the way of a snake on a rock,

the way of a ship at sea,

and the way of a man with a maiden.

This is the way of an adulteress: Pro 5:6Pro 7:13-23Num 5:11-30

She eats and wipes her mouth

and says, ‘I have done nothing wrong.’

Under three things the earth trembles, under four it cannot bear up:

a servant who becomes king, Pro 19:10Ecc 10:71Sa 25:10-111Sa 25:251Sa 25:31Sa 25:36-381Sa 30:16Isa 3:4-5

a fool who is filled with food,

an unloved woman who marries, Pro 21:19Pro 27:15Pro 21:9Pro 29:21Pro 19:13

and a maidservant who supplants her mistress.

Four things on earth are small, yet they are exceedingly wise: Job 12:7

The ants are creatures of little strength, yet they store up their food in the summer; Pro 6:6-8

the rock badgers 2are creatures of little power, yet they make their homes in the rocks; Psa 104:18Lev 11:5

the locusts have no king, yet they all advance in formation; Exo 10:4-6Jol 1:6-7Jol 2:25Jol 2:7-11Psa 105:34Exo 10:13-15Jol 1:4Rev 9:3-11

and the lizard can be caught in one’s hands, yet it is found in the palaces of kings.

There are three things that are stately in their stride, and four that are impressive in their walk:

a lion, mighty among beasts, refusing to retreat before anything; Jdg 14:18Num 23:24

a strutting rooster; Dan 3:15-18Pro 16:14Pro 20:2

a he-goat;

and a king with his army around him. 3

If you have foolishly exalted yourself Job 21:5Job 40:4Mic 7:16-17Pro 26:12Rom 3:19Ecc 8:3-4Pro 17:28

or if you have plotted evil,

put your hand over your mouth.

For as the churning of milk yields butter, Pro 17:14Pro 28:25Pro 29:22Pro 15:18Pro 16:28Pro 26:21

and the twisting of the nose draws blood,

so the stirring of anger brings forth strife.”
