Hezekiah’s Illness and Recovery

(2 Chronicles 32:24–31; Isaiah 38:1–8)

In those days Hezekiah became mortally ill. The prophet Isaiah son of Amoz came to him and said, “This is what the LORD says: ‘Put your house in order, for you are about to die; you will not recover.’” Isa 38:1-222Ch 32:24-26Php 2:27Jon 3:4-102Ki 19:202Sa 17:23Jer 18:7-10Php 2:30

Then Hezekiah turned his face to the wall and prayed to the LORD, saying, Psa 50:151Ki 8:30Isa 38:2-3Mat 6:6 “Please, O LORD, remember how I have walked before You faithfully and with wholehearted devotion; I have done what was good in Your sight.” And Hezekiah wept bitterly. Before Isaiah had left the middle courtyard, 1 the word of the LORD came to him, saying, 1Ki 7:82Ki 22:14 “Go back and tell Hezekiah the leader of My people that this is what the LORD, the God of your father David, says: ‘I have heard your prayer; I have seen your tears. I will surely heal you. On the third day from now you will go up to the house of the LORD. Psa 66:19-20Isa 38:51Sa 9:162Ki 19:20Psa 39:12Psa 126:5Psa 147:3Jas 5:14-15 I will add fifteen years to your life. And I will deliver you and this city from the hand of the king of Assyria. I will defend this city for My sake and for the sake of My servant David.’” 2Ki 19:34Act 27:24Isa 10:242Ch 32:22Psa 116:15

Then Isaiah said, “Prepare a poultice of figs.” So they brought it and applied it to the boil, and Hezekiah recovered. Isa 38:212Ki 2:20-222Ki 4:41

Now Hezekiah had asked Isaiah, “What will be the sign that the LORD will heal me and that I will go up to the house of the LORD on the third day?” Isa 7:11Jdg 6:172Ki 19:292Ki 20:5Hos 6:2Isa 38:22Isa 7:14Jdg 6:37-40

And Isaiah had replied, “This will be a sign to you from the LORD that He will do what He has promised: Would you like the shadow to go forward ten steps, or back ten steps?” Isa 38:7-8Luk 11:29-30Mat 16:1-4Mrk 8:11-12

“It is easy for the shadow to lengthen ten steps,” answered Hezekiah, “but not for it to go back ten steps.” 2Ki 2:102Ki 3:18Isa 49:6Jhn 14:12Mrk 9:28-29

So Isaiah the prophet called out to the LORD, and He brought the shadow back the ten steps it had descended on the stairway of Ahaz. Isa 38:82Ch 32:24Jos 10:12-141Ki 17:20-211Ki 18:36-382Ch 32:31Act 9:40Exo 14:15

Hezekiah Shows His Treasures

(Isaiah 39:1–8)

At that time Merodach-baladan 2son of Baladan king of Babylon sent letters and a gift to Hezekiah, for he had heard about Hezekiah’s illness. 2Ch 32:31Isa 39:1-82Sa 10:22Sa 8:10Gen 10:10Gen 11:9Isa 13:1Isa 13:19 And Hezekiah received the envoys and showed them all that was in his treasure house—the silver, the gold, the spices, and the precious oil, as well as his armory—all that was found in his storehouses. There was nothing in his palace or in all his dominion that Hezekiah did not show them. 1Ki 10:101Ki 10:151Ki 10:21Ki 10:252Ch 32:25-27Ecc 7:20Isa 39:2Pro 23:5

Then the prophet Isaiah went to King Hezekiah and asked, “Where did those men come from, and what did they say to you?” 2Ch 16:7-102Ch 25:15-162Ch 25:7-92Ki 5:25-262Sa 12:7-15Amo 7:12-13Deu 28:49Isa 13:5

“They came from a distant land,” Hezekiah replied, “from Babylon.”

“What have they seen in your palace?” Isaiah asked. 2Ki 20:131Jn 1:8-10Job 31:33Pro 28:13Jos 7:19

“They have seen everything in my palace,” answered Hezekiah. “There is nothing among my treasures that I did not show them.”

Then Isaiah said to Hezekiah, “Hear the word of the LORD: 1Ki 22:192Ki 7:1Amo 7:16Isa 1:10 The time will surely come when everything in your palace and all that your fathers have stored up until this day will be carried off to Babylon. Nothing will be left, says the LORD. 2Ki 24:132Ch 36:10Jer 27:21-22Jer 52:17-192Ki 25:13-152Ch 36:18Lev 26:19 And some of your descendants, your own flesh and blood, will be taken away to be eunuchs in the palace of the king of Babylon.” 2Ch 33:112Ki 24:12Dan 1:32Ki 25:6

But Hezekiah said to Isaiah, “The word of the LORD that you have spoken is good.” For he thought, “Will there not at least be peace and security in my lifetime?” 1Sa 3:18Est 9:30Jer 33:6Job 1:21Lam 3:22Lam 3:39Lev 10:3Luk 2:10

Manasseh Succeeds Hezekiah

As for the rest of the acts of Hezekiah, along with all his might and how he constructed the pool and the tunnel 3to bring water into the city, are they not written in the Book of the Chronicles of the Kings of Judah? Neh 3:162Ch 32:322Ch 32:42Ch 32:30Isa 22:9-111Ki 14:191Ki 15:231Ki 15:7
