A Call to Rebuild the Temple

(Ezra 5:1–5)

In the second year of the reign of Darius, on the first day of the sixth month, the word of the LORD came through Haggai the prophet to Zerubbabel son of Shealtiel, governor of Judah, and to Joshua son of Jehozadak, 1 the high priest, stating Ezr 2:2Ezr 3:2Ezr 3:8Hag 1:12Hag 2:10Neh 7:7Ezr 6:14Hag 1:14 that this is what the LORD of Hosts says: Ezr 4:23Neh 4:10Ecc 9:10Ecc 11:4Num 13:31Sng 5:2-3Pro 26:13-16Pro 29:25

“These people say, ‘The time has not yet come

to rebuild the house of the LORD.’”

Then the word of the LORD came through Haggai the prophet, saying: Ezr 5:1Zec 1:1

“Is it a time for you yourselves 2Sa 7:2Psa 132:3-5Php 2:21Hag 1:9Mat 6:33Jer 52:13Lam 4:1Dan 9:17-18

to live in your paneled houses,

while this house lies in ruins?”

Now this is what the LORD of Hosts says: Lam 3:402Co 13:5Hag 2:15-18Hag 1:7Luk 15:17Exo 9:21Gal 6:4Dan 10:12

“Consider carefully your ways.

You have planted much Hag 1:9Deu 28:38-40Hos 4:10Hag 2:16Hos 8:7Mal 3:9-11Mal 2:2Isa 5:10

but harvested little.

You eat but never have enough.

You drink but never have your fill.

You put on clothes but never get warm.

You earn wages to put into a bag pierced through.”

This is what the LORD of Hosts says: Psa 119:59-60Hag 1:5Php 3:1Isa 28:10

“Consider carefully your ways.

Go up into the hills, Psa 132:13-142Ch 7:162Ch 2:8-10Hag 2:71Ki 9:3Exo 29:43Ezr 3:7Hag 1:2-4

bring down lumber, and build the house,

so that I may take pleasure in it and be glorified,

says the LORD.

You expected much, Hag 1:4Hag 2:16-17Mal 2:2Rev 3:19Hag 1:6Isa 40:7Psa 77:5-101Co 11:30-32

but behold, it amounted to little.

And what you brought home, I blew away.

Why? declares the LORD of Hosts.

Because My house still lies in ruins,

while each of you is busy

with his own house.

Therefore, on account of you 1Ki 8:35Lev 26:191Ki 17:1Deu 28:23-24Jol 1:18-20Hos 2:9Jer 14:1-6

the heavens have withheld their dew

and the earth has withheld its crops.

I have summoned a drought Hag 2:17Deu 28:221Ki 17:12Ki 8:1Amo 5:8Amo 7:4Amo 9:6Job 34:29

on the fields and on the mountains,

on the grain, new wine, and oil,

and on whatever the ground yields,

on man and beast,

and on all the labor of your hands.”

The People Obey

Then Zerubbabel son of Shealtiel and Joshua son of Jehozadak, the high priest, as well as all the remnant of the people, obeyed the voice of the LORD their God and the words of the prophet Haggai, because the LORD their God had sent him. So the people feared the LORD. Isa 50:10Ezr 5:2Hag 1:14Psa 112:1Ecc 12:13Pro 1:7Gen 22:12Hag 1:1

Haggai, the messenger of the LORD, delivered the message of the LORD to the people: Isa 43:2Mat 28:20Mal 3:1Rom 8:31Act 18:9-10Hag 2:4Isa 41:10Psa 46:11

“I am with you,”

declares the LORD.

So the LORD stirred the spirit of Zerubbabel son of Shealtiel, governor of Judah, and the spirit of Joshua son of Jehozadak, the high priest, as well as the spirit of all the remnant of the people. And they came and began the work on the house of the LORD of Hosts, their God, 2Ch 36:22Heb 13:21Ezr 1:1Ezr 1:5Hag 1:1Hag 2:211Ch 5:26Ezr 5:2 on the twenty-fourth day of the sixth month, in the second year of King Darius.
