The Supremacy of the Son

(Colossians 1:15–23)

On many past occasions and in many different ways, God spoke to our fathers through the prophets. 2Pe 1:20-21Jol 2:28Num 12:6-8Luk 24:271Pe 1:10-12Gen 46:2-4Luk 1:55Act 2:30 But in these last days He has spoken to us by His Son, 1 whom He appointed heir of all things, and through whom He made the universe. 2 Jhn 1:31Co 8:6Col 1:16-18Jhn 1:141Pe 1:20Mat 28:18Jhn 13:3Php 2:9-11

The Son is the radiance of God’s glory and the exact representation of His nature, upholding all things by His powerful word. After He had provided purification for sins, He sat down at the right hand of the Majesty on high. Col 1:15-17Rev 4:11Jhn 14:9-10Jhn 1:142Co 4:4Heb 10:12Heb 12:2Jhn 1:4 So He became as far superior to the angels as the name He has inherited is excellent beyond theirs. Eph 1:21Php 2:9-111Pe 3:22Heb 2:9Rev 5:11-122Th 1:7Psa 2:7-8Col 1:18 For to which of the angels did God ever say: Psa 2:7Act 13:33Heb 5:52Sa 7:141Ch 17:131Ch 22:10Psa 89:26-271Ch 28:6

“You are My Son;

today I have become Your Father” 3?

Or again:

“I will be His Father,

and He will be My Son” 4?

And again, when God brings His firstborn into the world, He says: 1Pe 3:22Deu 32:43Psa 97:7Col 1:18Col 1:15Jhn 1:14Rev 5:9-12Rev 1:5

“Let all God’s angels worship Him.” 5

Now about the angels He says: Psa 104:4Heb 1:142Ki 6:172Ki 2:11Ezk 1:13-14Zec 6:5Dan 7:10Isa 6:2

“He makes His angels winds,

His servants flames of fire.” 6

But about the Son He says: Psa 45:6-7Isa 9:6-7Jer 23:5-6Rom 9:51Jn 5:20Jhn 10:30Isa 7:14Mat 1:23

“Your throne, O God, endures forever and ever,

and justice is the scepter of Your kingdom.

You have loved righteousness Psa 45:7Psa 23:5Isa 61:3Gal 5:22Isa 61:1Rom 15:13Amo 5:15Luk 4:18

and hated wickedness;

therefore God, Your God, has anointed You

above Your companions with the oil of joy.” 7

And: Psa 102:25-27Gen 1:1Jhn 1:1-3Jer 32:17Isa 48:13Psa 8:3-4Isa 42:5Zec 12:1

“In the beginning, O Lord, You laid the foundations of the earth,

and the heavens are the work of Your hands.

They will perish, but You remain; Isa 51:6Mrk 13:31Luk 21:33Mat 24:35Isa 34:4Rev 21:1Psa 10:16Isa 65:17

they will all wear out like a garment.

You will roll them up like a robe; Psa 102:26-27Heb 13:8Jas 1:17Jhn 8:58Exo 3:14Psa 90:4

like a garment 8they will be changed;

but You remain the same,

and Your years will never end.” 9

Yet to which of the angels did God ever say: Psa 110:1Mrk 12:36Heb 10:12-13Mat 22:441Co 15:25-26Act 2:34-36Heb 1:3Act 7:55

“Sit at My right hand

until I make Your enemies a footstool for Your feet” 10?

Are not the angels 11ministering spirits sent to serve those who will inherit salvation? Psa 34:7Psa 103:20-21Psa 91:11-12Dan 6:22Mat 18:10Act 27:23Act 5:19Act 10:3-4
