Moab’s Destruction
(Zephaniah 2:8–11)
Send the tribute lambs 2Ki 3:4Isa 10:322Ki 14:72Sa 8:2Ezr 7:17Isa 42:11Mic 4:8
to the ruler of the land,
from Sela in the desert
to the mount of Daughter Zion.
Like fluttering birds Pro 27:8Jdg 11:18Deu 2:36Deu 3:12Deu 3:8Isa 13:14Jer 48:20Jos 13:16
pushed out of the nest,
so are the daughters of Moab
at the fords of the Arnon:
“Give us counsel; 1Ki 18:4Isa 32:2Dan 4:27Ezk 45:9-12Heb 13:2Isa 1:17Isa 25:4Isa 56:8
render a decision.
Shelter us at noonday
with shade as dark as night.
Hide the refugees;
do not betray the one who flees.
Let my fugitives stay with you; Isa 14:4Isa 51:13Isa 9:4Mal 4:3Deu 23:15-16Deu 24:14Isa 15:6Isa 25:10
be a refuge for Moab from the destroyer.”
When the oppressor has gone, destruction has ceased,
and the oppressors have vanished from the land,
in loving devotion 1a throne will be established Dan 7:14Mic 4:7Isa 9:6-7Dan 7:27Isa 32:1-2Luk 1:31-33Zec 9:92Pe 3:11-12
in the tent of David.
A judge seeking justice and hastening righteousness
will sit on it in faithfulness.
We have heard of Moab’s pomposity, Amo 2:1Jer 48:29-30Oba 1:3-4Jer 48:26Jer 48:42Zep 2:8-10Isa 2:11Isa 28:15
his exceeding pride and conceit,
his overflowing arrogance.
But his boasting is empty.
Therefore let Moab wail; 2Ki 3:251Ch 16:3Jer 48:20Isa 15:1-5Isa 16:11Isa 8:19
let them wail together for Moab.
Moan for the raisin cakes of Kir-hareseth,
you who are utterly stricken.
For the fields of Heshbon have withered, Isa 15:4Num 32:382Sa 1:21Isa 10:7Isa 16:9Isa 24:7Jer 27:6-7Jer 48:32
along with the grapevines of Sibmah.
The rulers of the nations
have trampled its choicest vines,
which had reached as far as Jazer
and spread toward the desert.
Their shoots had spread out
and passed over the sea. 2
So I weep with Jazer Jer 40:12Isa 15:4-5Jer 40:10Isa 9:3Jdg 9:27Jer 48:32-34
for the vines of Sibmah;
I drench Heshbon and Elealeh
with my tears.
Triumphant shouts have fallen silent
over your summer fruit and your harvest.
Joy and gladness are removed from the orchard; Jer 48:33Amo 5:11Amo 5:17Jdg 9:27Hab 3:17-18Isa 24:7-9Isa 32:10Job 24:11
no one sings or shouts in the vineyards.
No one tramples the grapes in the winepresses;
I have put an end to the cheering.
Therefore my heart laments for Moab like a harp, Isa 15:5Hos 11:8Isa 63:15Jer 48:36Php 2:1Jer 31:20Jer 4:19
my inmost being for Kir-heres. 3
When Moab appears on the high place, Isa 15:21Ki 18:29Jer 48:35Jer 48:46Jer 48:7Num 22:39Num 23:14Num 23:28
when he wearies himself
and enters his sanctuary to pray,
it will do him no good.
This is the message that the LORD spoke earlier concerning Moab. Isa 44:8 And now the LORD says, “In three years, as a hired worker counts the years, Moab’s splendor will become an object of contempt, with all her many people. And those who are left will be few and feeble.” Isa 21:16Isa 23:9Jer 48:42Jer 48:46-47Deu 15:8Est 5:11Gen 31:1Isa 15:5
