The Birth of Jesus

(Matthew 1:18–25)

The Shepherds and the Angels

And there were shepherds residing in the fields nearby, keeping watch over their flocks by night. on whom His favor rests!”

When the angels had left them and gone into heaven, the shepherds said to one another, “Let us go to Bethlehem and see this thing that has happened, which the Lord has made known to us.” 1Pe 3:22Mat 2:1-2Exo 3:3Luk 24:51Mat 2:9-112Ki 2:12Ki 2:11Jhn 20:1-10

So they hurried off and found Mary and Joseph and the Baby, who was lying in the manger. Jesus Presented at the Temple

When the eight days until His circumcision had passed, He was named Jesus, the name the angel had given Him before He had been conceived. Gen 17:12Lev 12:3Luk 1:31Luk 1:59Gal 4:4-5Mat 1:21Mat 3:15Php 2:8

And when the time of purification according to the Law of Moses was complete, His parents brought Him to Jerusalem to present Him to the Lord Lev 12:1-8 (as it is written in the Law of the Lord: “Every firstborn male shall be consecrated to the Lord” 3), Exo 13:2Exo 22:29Num 3:13Exo 34:19Num 18:15Num 8:16-17Exo 13:12-15 and to offer the sacrifice specified in the Law of the Lord: “A pair of turtledoves or two young pigeons.” 4 Lev 12:6-8Lev 12:22Co 8:9

The Prophecy of Simeon

Now there was a man in Jerusalem named Simeon, who was righteous and devout. He was waiting for the consolation of Israel, and the Holy Spirit was upon him. and for glory to Your people Israel.”

“Behold, this Child is appointed to cause

the rise and fall of many in Israel,

and to be a sign that will be spoken against,

and a sword will pierce your soul as well.”

The Prophecy of Anna

There was also a prophetess named Anna, the daughter of Phanuel, of the tribe of Asher, who was well along in years. She had been married for seven years, Psa 92:14Exo 15:20Gen 30:13Act 2:18Act 21:9Jdg 4:41Co 12:12Ki 22:14 and then was a widow to the age of eighty-four. 6 She never left the temple, but worshiped night and day, fasting and praying. 1Ti 5:5Psa 23:6Act 14:23Act 13:3Psa 27:4Act 26:7Exo 38:8Luk 5:33

Coming forward at that moment, she gave thanks to God and spoke about the Child to all who were waiting for the redemption of Jerusalem. Luk 2:252Co 9:15Luk 1:68Luk 24:21Mrk 15:43Eph 1:3Luk 1:46-56Luk 2:28-32

The Return to Nazareth

(Matthew 2:19–23)

When Jesus’ parents had done everything required by the Law of the Lord, they returned to Galilee, to their own town of Nazareth. Luk 2:4Deu 12:32Gal 4:4-5Mat 3:15Luk 2:21-24Luk 2:51Mat 2:22-23Luk 1:6

The Boy Jesus at the Temple

Every year His parents went to Jerusalem for the Feast of the Passover. Deu 12:18Deu 16:1-8Exo 12:14Exo 23:14-17Exo 34:23Lev 23:5Num 28:161Sa 1:21 And when He was twelve years old, they went up according to the custom of the Feast.

When those days were over and they were returning home, the boy Jesus remained behind in Jerusalem, but His parents were unaware He had stayed. 2Ch 25:172Ch 30:21-23Exo 12:15 Assuming He was in their company, they traveled on for a day before they began to look for Him among their relatives and friends. When they could not find Him, they returned to Jerusalem to search for Him. Finally, after three days they found Him in the temple courts, sitting among the teachers, listening to them and asking them questions. When His parents saw Him, they were astonished. “Child, why have You done this to us?” His mother asked. “Your father and I have been anxiously searching for You.” Luk 2:49Mat 12:46Luk 3:23Luk 4:22
