Christ’s Perfect Sacrifice

(Psalms 40:1–17)

For the law is only a shadow of the good things to come, not the realities themselves. It can never, by the same sacrifices offered year after year, make perfect those who draw near to worship. Col 2:17Heb 8:5Heb 9:11Heb 9:23Heb 7:18-19Heb 9:25Heb 10:11-18Heb 9:8-9 If it could, would not the offerings have ceased? For the worshipers would have been cleansed once for all, and would no longer have felt the guilt of their sins. Isa 43:25Mic 7:19Psa 103:12Isa 44:22Heb 10:17Heb 9:13-14

Instead, those sacrifices are an annual reminder of sins, Heb 9:7Exo 30:10Lev 16:34Lev 16:6-11Lev 23:27-281Ki 17:18Lev 16:21-22Lev 16:29-30 because it is impossible for the blood of bulls and goats to take away sins. Heb 10:11Isa 1:11-15Mic 6:6-8Rom 11:271Jn 3:5Heb 10:8Mrk 12:33Amo 5:21-22 Therefore, when Christ came into the world, He said: Psa 40:6-8Isa 1:11Isa 7:141Pe 2:24Mat 1:20-23Heb 10:7Gal 4:4Heb 1:6

“Sacrifice and offering You did not desire,

but a body You prepared for Me.

In burnt offerings and sin offerings Heb 10:4Mal 1:10Mat 3:17Eph 5:2Lev 1:1-6Php 4:18Psa 147:11

You took no delight.

Then I said, ‘Here I am, it is written about Me in the scroll: Psa 40:7-8Jhn 4:34Jhn 6:38Jhn 5:30Heb 10:9-10Jer 36:2Gen 3:15Pro 8:31

I have come to do Your will, O God.’” 1

In the passage above He says, “Sacrifices and offerings, burnt offerings and sin offerings You did not desire, nor did You delight in them” (although they are offered according to the law). Heb 10:5Mrk 12:33 Then He adds, “Here I am, I have come to do Your will.” He takes away the first to establish the second. Heb 7:18-19Heb 12:27-28Heb 10:7Heb 9:11-14Heb 8:7-13 And by that will, we have been sanctified through the sacrifice of the body of Jesus Christ once for all. Heb 10:14Heb 10:121Co 6:11Heb 7:27Jhn 17:19Heb 13:12Heb 9:121Co 1:30

Day after day every priest stands to minister and to offer again and again the same sacrifices, which can never take away sins. Heb 10:4Heb 5:1Num 28:3Psa 50:8-13Heb 10:1Heb 7:27Isa 1:11Dan 11:31 But when this Priest had offered for all time one sacrifice for sins, He sat down at the right hand of God. Heb 1:3Col 3:1Rom 8:34Heb 8:1Act 2:33-34Heb 9:12 Since that time, He waits for His enemies to be made a footstool for His feet, Heb 1:13Psa 110:1Luk 20:431Co 15:25Mrk 12:36Act 2:35Mat 22:44Dan 2:44 because by a single offering He has made perfect for all time those who are being sanctified. Heb 9:14Heb 7:25Heb 10:1Heb 2:11Heb 13:12Rom 15:16Act 20:32Eph 5:26

The Holy Spirit also testifies to us about this. First He says: Heb 3:72Pe 1:21Rev 2:11Rev 3:6Act 28:25Jhn 15:261Pe 1:11-122Sa 23:2

“This is the covenant I will make with them Jer 31:33-34Heb 8:8-12Rom 11:27

after those days, declares the Lord.

I will put My laws in their hearts

and inscribe them on their minds.” 2

Then He adds: Heb 8:12Jer 31:34

“Their sins and lawless acts

I will remember no more.” 3

And where these have been forgiven, an offering for sin is no longer needed. Heb 10:2Heb 10:14

A Call to Persevere

(Jude 1:17–23)

Therefore, brothers, since we have confidence to enter the Most Holy Place 4by the blood of Jesus, Eph 2:18Heb 9:12Heb 4:16Eph 3:12Rom 5:2Heb 12:281Jn 4:17Rom 8:15 by the new and living way opened for us through the curtain of His body, 5 Jhn 14:6Jhn 10:9Heb 9:3Heb 6:19Heb 9:8Jhn 10:7Lev 16:2Mat 27:51 and since we have a great priest over the house of God, Heb 2:17Heb 4:14-16Heb 6:20Heb 8:1Eph 2:19-22Heb 3:1Heb 7:26Heb 3:3-6 let us draw near with a sincere heart in full assurance of faith, having our hearts sprinkled to cleanse us from a guilty conscience and our bodies washed with pure water. Remember the early days that you were in the light. 8 In those days, you endured a great conflict in the face of suffering. Heb 6:42Ti 2:3-132Ti 4:7-8Gal 3:3-4Heb 12:42Jn 1:8Act 8:1-3Php 1:29-30 Sometimes you were publicly exposed to ridicule and persecution; at other times you were partners with those who were so treated. 1Co 4:9Php 4:142Co 12:10Heb 11:36Isa 51:7Php 1:7Psa 74:221Th 2:14 You sympathized with those in prison and joyfully accepted the confiscation of your property, knowing that you yourselves had a better and permanent possession. 1Pe 1:42Ti 1:16Mat 6:19-20Col 1:5Eph 6:20Jas 1:2Luk 12:33Mat 5:11-12

So do not throw away your confidence; it holds a great reward. 1Co 15:58Gal 6:8-10Heb 3:6Luk 14:14Heb 11:26Heb 4:14Mat 5:12Heb 3:14 You need to persevere, so that after you have done the will of God, you will receive what He has promised.
