Jeremiah’s Scroll Read in the Temple

In the fourth year of Jehoiakim son of Josiah king of Judah, this word came to Jeremiah from the LORD: Jer 25:12Ch 36:52Ki 24:1-2Jer 35:1Jer 45:1 “Take a scroll and write on it all the words I have spoken to you concerning Israel, Judah, and all the nations, from the day I first spoke to you during the reign of Josiah until today. Jer 30:2Exo 17:14Jer 1:10Jer 25:3Jer 36:6Ezk 2:9Jer 25:9-29Jer 36:23 Perhaps when the people of Judah hear about all the calamity I plan to bring upon them, each of them will turn from his wicked way. Then I will forgive their iniquity and their sin.” Jer 18:8Act 3:19Deu 30:2Jer 26:3Ezk 12:3Jer 36:71Sa 7:32Pe 3:9

So Jeremiah called Baruch son of Neriah, and at the dictation of Jeremiah, Baruch wrote on a scroll all the words that the LORD had spoken to Jeremiah. Jer 32:12Ezk 2:9Jer 36:32Jer 43:3Isa 8:1Jer 36:17-18Jer 36:21Jer 36:23

Then Jeremiah commanded Baruch, “I am restricted; I cannot enter the house of the LORD; Jer 32:2Jer 33:12Co 11:232Ti 2:9Eph 3:1Eph 6:20Heb 11:36Jer 20:2 so you are to go to the house of the LORD on a day of fasting, and in the hearing of the people you are to read the words of the LORD from the scroll you have written at my dictation. Read them in the hearing of all the people of Judah who are coming from their cities. Jer 36:8-9Jer 22:2Jer 26:2Jer 7:2Lev 16:29-31Ezk 2:3-7Lev 23:27-32Act 27:9

Perhaps they will bring their petition before the LORD, and each one will turn from his wicked way; for great are the anger and fury that the LORD has pronounced against this people.” Jer 36:32Ch 33:12-132Ki 22:132Ki 22:17Hos 5:15Jer 21:5Jer 4:4Lam 4:11

So Baruch son of Neriah did everything that Jeremiah the prophet had commanded him. In the house of the LORD he read the words of the LORD from the scroll. Jer 1:171Co 16:10Jer 36:4Luk 4:16-30Mat 16:24Neh 8:3Php 2:19-22

Now in the ninth month of the fifth year of Jehoiakim son of Josiah king of Judah, a fast before the LORD was proclaimed to all the people of Jerusalem and all who had come there from the cities of Judah. 2Ch 20:3Est 4:16Jer 36:22Jon 3:5Isa 58:1-3Jer 36:1Jol 1:13Jol 2:12-17 From the chamber of Gemariah son of Shaphan the scribe, which was in the upper courtyard at the opening of the New Gate of the house of the LORD, Baruch read from the scroll the words of Jeremiah in the hearing of all the people. Jeremiah’s Scroll Read in the Palace

When Micaiah son of Gemariah, the son of Shaphan, heard all the words of the LORD from the scroll, 2Ch 34:202Ki 22:12-142Ki 25:22Jer 36:10 he went down to the scribe’s chamber in the king’s palace, where all the officials were sitting: Elishama the scribe, Delaiah son of Shemaiah, Elnathan son of Achbor, Gemariah son of Shaphan, Zedekiah son of Hananiah, and all the other officials. Jer 26:222Ki 22:12Jer 36:25Jer 41:12Ki 22:142Ki 22:32Ki 24:8Jer 28:1-17 And Micaiah reported to them all the words he had heard Baruch read from the scroll in the hearing of the people. 2Ki 22:102Ch 34:16-182Ch 34:242Ki 22:19Jon 3:6

Then all the officials sent word to Baruch through Jehudi son of Nethaniah, the son of Shelemiah, the son of Cushi, saying, “Bring the scroll that you read in the hearing of the people, and come here.” Jer 36:22Ki 25:23Ezk 2:6-7Jer 36:21Jer 40:8Jer 41:1-2Jer 41:16Jer 41:18

So Baruch son of Neriah took the scroll and went to them.

“Please sit down,” they said, “and read it in our hearing.”

So Baruch read it in their hearing.

When they had heard all these words, they turned to one another in fear and said to Baruch, “Surely we must report all these words to the king.” Amo 7:10-11Jer 13:18Jer 36:24Act 24:25-26Jer 38:1-4

“Tell us now,” they asked Baruch, “how did you write all these words? Was it at Jeremiah’s dictation?” Jhn 9:15Jhn 9:10-11Jhn 9:26-27

“It was at his dictation,” Baruch replied. “He recited all these words to me and I wrote them in ink on the scroll.” Jer 36:4Jer 36:2Jer 43:2-3Pro 26:4-5

Then the officials said to Baruch, “You and Jeremiah must hide yourselves and tell no one where you are.” 1Ki 17:31Ki 18:101Ki 18:4Jer 26:20-24Jer 36:262Ch 25:15Act 23:16-22Act 5:40

Jehoiakim Burns the Scroll

So the officials went to the king in the courtyard. And having stored the scroll in the chamber of Elishama the scribe, they reported everything to the king. Jer 36:12Jer 36:21

Then the king sent Jehudi to get the scroll, and he took it from the chamber of Elishama the scribe. And Jehudi read it in the hearing of the king and all the officials who were standing beside him. 2Ki 22:102Ch 34:18Ezk 2:4-5Jer 23:28Jer 26:2Jer 36:15

Since it was the ninth month, the king was sitting in his winter quarters with a fire burning before him. Amo 3:15Jer 22:14-16Jer 3:20Jer 36:9 And as soon as Jehudi had read three or four columns, Jehoiakim would cut them off with a scribe’s knife and throw them into the firepot, until the entire scroll had been consumed by the fire. 1Ki 22:81Ki 22:27Isa 28:14-15Isa 5:18-19Pro 1:30Pro 13:13Pro 19:21Pro 21:30

Yet in hearing all these words, the king and his servants did not become frightened or tear their garments. Jer 36:16Psa 36:11Ki 21:272Ki 19:1-2Isa 36:22Jon 3:6Psa 64:52Ch 34:19-31 Even though Elnathan, Delaiah, and Gemariah urged the king not to burn the scroll, he would not listen to them. But the LORD had hidden them. 1Ki 17:31Ki 19:1-31Ki 19:101Ki 19:14Psa 91:1Act 12:11Isa 26:20Psa 27:5

Jeremiah Rewrites the Scroll

After the king had burned the scroll containing the words that Baruch had written at Jeremiah’s dictation, the word of the LORD came to Jeremiah: Jer 36:4 “Take another scroll and rewrite on it the very words that were on the original scroll, which Jehoiakim king of Judah has burned. Zec 1:5-62Ti 2:13Jer 28:13-14Jer 44:28Job 23:13Mat 24:35

You are to proclaim concerning Jehoiakim king of Judah that this is what the LORD says: You have burned the scroll and said, ‘Why have you written on it that the king of Babylon would surely come and destroy this land and deprive it of man and beast?’ Isa 30:10Jer 26:9Deu 29:19Isa 29:21Isa 45:9Jer 32:3Job 15:241Co 10:22

Therefore this is what the LORD says about Jehoiakim king of Judah: He will have no one to sit on David’s throne, and his body will be thrown out and exposed to heat by day and frost by night. Jer 22:302Ki 24:12-15Gen 31:40Jer 22:18-19 I will punish him and his descendants and servants for their iniquity. I will bring on them, on the residents of Jerusalem, and on the men of Judah, all the calamity about which I warned them but they did not listen.” Pro 29:1Jer 19:15Jer 23:34Jer 35:17Deu 28:15-68Jer 11:8Jer 17:18Jer 29:17-19

Then Jeremiah took another scroll and gave it to the scribe Baruch son of Neriah, and at Jeremiah’s dictation he wrote on it all the words of the scroll that Jehoiakim king of Judah had burned in the fire. And many similar words were added to them. Jer 36:4Jer 36:18Exo 4:15-16Dan 3:19Exo 34:1Jer 36:23Lev 26:18Lev 26:21
