Jeremiah Cast into the Cistern

Now Shephatiah son of Mattan, Gedaliah son of Pashhur, Jucal 1son of Shelemiah, and Pashhur son of Malchijah heard that Jeremiah had been telling all the people: 1Ch 9:12Act 4:1-2Act 4:6-10Act 5:28Ezr 2:3Jer 21:1-10Jer 37:3-4Neh 11:12 “This is what the LORD says: Whoever stays in this city will die by sword and famine and plague, but whoever surrenders to the Chaldeans 2will live; he will retain his life like a spoil of war, and he will live. Jer 39:18Jer 34:17Jer 45:5Ezk 14:21Jer 42:17Ezk 5:12-17Ezk 6:11Ezk 7:15 This is what the LORD says: This city will surely be delivered into the hands of the army of the king of Babylon, and he will capture it.” Jer 21:10Jer 32:3-5

Then the officials said to the king, “This man ought to die, for he is discouraging the warriors who remain in this city, as well as all the people, by speaking such words to them; this man is not seeking the well-being of these people, but their ruin.” Jer 26:11Act 16:201Ki 18:17-181Ki 21:20Amo 7:10Exo 5:4Jer 29:7Neh 6:9

“Here he is,” replied King Zedekiah. “He is in your hands, since the king can do nothing to stop you.” Jhn 19:12-162Sa 3:391Sa 15:241Sa 29:92Sa 19:22Pro 29:25

So they took Jeremiah and dropped him into the cistern of Malchiah, the king’s son, which was in the courtyard of the guard. They lowered Jeremiah with ropes into the cistern, which had no water but only mud, and Jeremiah sank down into the mud. Jer 37:21Jer 37:16Jer 38:22Psa 69:14-15Psa 69:2Act 16:24Gen 37:24Lam 3:52-55 Now Ebed-melech the Cushite, 3 a court official 4in the royal palace, heard that Jeremiah had been put into the cistern. While the king was sitting at the Gate of Benjamin, Amo 5:10Deu 21:19Jer 29:2Jer 37:13Jer 13:23Jer 39:16-18Luk 10:30-36Luk 13:29-30 Ebed-melech went out from the king’s palace and said to the king, “My lord the king, these men have acted wickedly in all that they have done to Jeremiah the prophet. They have dropped him into the cistern, where he will starve to death, for there is no more bread in the city.” Jer 37:21Est 7:4-6Jer 52:6Job 31:34Pro 24:11-12Pro 31:8-9

So the king commanded Ebed-melech the Cushite, “Take thirty men from here with you and pull Jeremiah the prophet out of the cistern before he dies.” Est 5:2Est 8:7Pro 21:1Psa 75:10

Then Ebed-melech took the men with him and went to the king’s palace, to a place below the storehouse. From there he took old rags and worn-out clothes and lowered them with ropes to Jeremiah in the cistern.

Ebed-melech the Cushite cried out to Jeremiah, “Put these worn-out rags and clothes under your arms to pad the ropes.” Jeremiah did so, Eph 4:32Rom 12:10Rom 12:15 and they pulled him up with the ropes and lifted him out of the cistern. And Jeremiah remained in the courtyard of the guard. Jer 37:21Act 23:35Act 28:16Act 28:301Ki 22:27Act 24:23-26Jer 38:28Jer 38:6

Then King Zedekiah sent for Jeremiah the prophet and received him at the third entrance to the house of the LORD. “I am going to ask you something,” said the king to Jeremiah. “Do not hide anything from me.” 1Ki 22:16Jer 21:1-2Jer 37:171Sa 3:17-18Jer 42:2-5Jer 42:201Ki 10:52Ch 18:15

“If I tell you,” Jeremiah replied, “you will surely put me to death. And even if I give you advice, you will not listen to me.” Luk 22:67-68

But King Zedekiah swore secretly to Jeremiah, “As surely as the LORD lives, who has given us this life, I will not kill you, nor will I deliver you into the hands of these men who are seeking your life.” Jer 37:17Jer 38:1-6Isa 57:16Jhn 3:2Zec 12:1Jer 34:20Num 16:22Num 27:16

Then Jeremiah said to Zedekiah, “This is what the LORD God of Hosts, the God of Israel, says: ‘If you indeed surrender to the officers of the king of Babylon, then you will live, this city will not be burned down, and you and your household will survive. Jer 27:12Jer 27:17Jer 38:2Jer 21:8-10Jer 39:32Ki 24:12Jer 7:6-71Ch 17:24 But if you do not surrender to the officers of the king of Babylon, then this city will be delivered into the hands of the Chaldeans. They will burn it down, and you yourself will not escape their grasp.’” 2Ki 25:4-10Jer 24:8-10Jer 32:3-5Jer 38:32Ki 24:122Ki 25:27-30Ezk 12:13Ezk 17:20-21

But King Zedekiah said to Jeremiah, “I am afraid of the Jews who have deserted to the Chaldeans, for the Chaldeans may deliver me into their hands to abuse me.” Jhn 12:42Isa 51:12-13Isa 57:11Jer 38:22Jhn 19:12-131Sa 31:4Jer 39:91Sa 15:24

“They will not hand you over,” Jeremiah replied. “Obey the voice of the LORD in what I am telling you, that it may go well with you and you may live. Dan 4:27Isa 55:3Jer 26:132Ch 20:20Act 26:292Co 5:112Co 5:202Co 6:1 But if you refuse to surrender, this is the word that the LORD has shown me: Ezk 2:4-5Ezk 2:7Act 18:6Act 20:26-27Exo 10:3-4Exo 16:28Ezk 3:17-19Heb 12:25 All the women who remain in the palace of the king of Judah will be brought out to the officials of the king of Babylon, and those women will say: Jer 43:6Lam 1:2Lam 5:11Isa 42:17Jer 20:10Jer 38:19Jer 38:4-6Jer 41:10

‘They misled you and overcame you—

those trusted friends of yours.

Your feet sank into the mire,

and they deserted you.’

All your wives and children will be brought out to the Chaldeans. And you yourself will not escape their grasp, for you will be seized by the king of Babylon, and this city will be burned down.” Jer 41:10Jer 38:18Jer 39:62Ch 36:20-212Ki 25:7Jer 27:12-13Jer 52:8-13Ezk 14:9

Then Zedekiah warned Jeremiah, “Do not let anyone know about this conversation, or you will die. If the officials hear that I have spoken with you, and they come and demand of you, ‘Tell us what you said to the king and what he said to you; do not hide it from us, or we will kill you,’ Jer 38:27Jer 38:4-6 then tell them, ‘I was presenting to the king my petition that he not return me to the house of Jonathan to die there.’” Jer 37:20Jer 37:15Est 4:8Jer 42:2

When all the officials came to Jeremiah and questioned him, he relayed to them the exact words the king had commanded him to say. So they said no more to him, for no one had overheard the conversation. 1Sa 10:15-161Sa 16:2-52Ki 6:19Act 23:6 And Jeremiah remained in the courtyard of the guard until the day Jerusalem was captured.
